Scoundreller··on Replacing the old battery on rechargeable bike lights
It’s more of a “be seen” light rather than one that lights the way ahead.

My jurisdiction requires a solid white light facing forward at night, but you can have a flasher in addition to that (cuz drivers still won’t see you with a solid light…).

Also a good backup it your main light does to stay legal.

Scoundreller··on Banks and Credit Unions to Team Up Against Apple Pay Fees
> Somewhat related, even Walmart relented and now supports Apple Pay/Contactless.

Walmart USA.

Walmart Canada allowed contactless pretty much from the start over a decade ago

Always confused me on trips to USA when I’d have to insert a card

Scoundreller··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
I suspect more modern computers would have chipsets with dead leads for rs232 if your soldering is fine enough
Scoundreller··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026

which EU country permits non-EU plates (and insurance?) indefinitely?

Bangladesh is already at ~3x the population density as India

For whatever reason, India had quite a lead on pharma manufacturing and still runs carries its own pretty well
Scoundreller··on Back and shoulder surgery is often worse than useless
For ~90% of the population, it’s right there under 200km away.

It’s really not that unusual to manufacture in bulk at one facility and package in another.

Also let’s multiple “competitors” consolidate packaging into one big operation. Or localized to destination. Also a space thing: can ship more in bulk and make it all fluffier closer to point of sale.

Shoeboxes, among other packages, are a lot of air, why fill your truck/container/aircraft “unit load device” with it.

From teardowns, there’s more than just antennae in those shark fins, so might amplify or LNA or whatever within the shark fin.
Scoundreller··on Making Startups Powerful
I miss the pre-https-by-default days where I could see what search terms people used to land on my blog. Gave excellent topic ideas for unmet needs.

I thought most would use their “shark fin” on the roof for everything (if there is one but there usually is). Terminating on the other end somewhere with a color coded FAKRA connector.
Scoundreller··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
I later in life learned that the “test cards - all channels” ads I saw in the back of the library’s Popular Science in the 90s probably weren’t scams.
Scoundreller··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
> These scammers usually do IP address checks to check for residential IP before showing the scam, and some also do some basic fingerprinting checks, so that is how they get past detection.

Same issue with spam sms in my country: I think they geo-locate it so submitting the link to safe browsing project takes way too long

Scoundreller··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
It's more than that. The 10% is the scam ads that "won" the ad auctions. It doesn't include the effect of scam ads bidding up the market and increasing the price of non-scam ad wins.

(Could also argue that the scam ad that won the slot for 10 cents would have gone for 9 cents without the scam and Meta's marginal revenue was only 1 cent... but if every ad is 1 cent more...)

Same problem when you want to buy a home in a place where real estate became a means for money laundering or uninhabited store of value

obviously this isn't official advice, but are they misinformed and don't like you doing legal things that bother them?

> Any small pleasure vessel leaving a United States port into international or foreign waters, without a call at a foreign port, does not satisfy the foreign departure requirement. Therefore, certain fishing vessels, cruises to nowhere, or any vessel that leaves from a United States port and returns without calling a foreign port or place, has not departed the United States.

Dunno how much emphasis to put on the word "port"

While it's a more inland water, Large vessels effectively can't transit through Windows/Detroit shipping channel without multiple border line crossings: https://i0.wp.com/niche-canada.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/1...

and rowhammer etc mitigations microcode updates

personally I have an i7 in the lab that turned into a crawl on Youtube because they started sending VP9 video by default, but i7 doesn't have hardware decode for it. Got a plugin to force h264 (h264ify) and it's back to normal.

Then you have situations where a software update adds a CPU instruction dependency and straight up doesn't work anymore.

Had to install and force-retain an old version of Spotify client on a bench lab PC because the new versions require AVX-1/2. It's a streaming audio player...

Scoundreller··on Will There Be a 7G?
that's why I said "kept on the lower G". If a new lower one pops up, that's a different story.
Scoundreller··on Will there be a 7G?
700MHz is a mixed bag for rural coverage. Great for punching through trees, but need very tall towers to overcome destructive fresnel lens losses. Higher frequencies are usually better here + more gain!
Scoundreller··on Will there be a 7G?
There’s always a gradual refarming of the spectrum into the next G. Usually the most penetrating frequencies (ie lowest) are kept on the lower G to maximize legacy support.

For a while I had my phone stick to 3G, which doesn’t support emergency alerts, because my jurisdiction kept sending them out for joint custody disputes at 3AM 1000km away. It was fine But the 3G became unbearable and they tightened up the alert criteria.

Scoundreller··on Diesel prices in U.S. top $6 a gallon for first time
A lot of the “savings” in US get eaten up through poor economy, poor driving strategy and dependence on traffic lights + stop signs instead of roundabouts + “traffic from the left/right gets priority” yield-by-default junctions.

I think cost per kilometre/lightyear/rod is close

Scoundreller··on Diesel prices in U.S. top $6 a gallon for first time
Probably doesn’t help that the ethanol that gets (increasingly) blended with gas is pretty cheap while the seed oils blended with diesel aren’t.

And the ethanol makes the fuel less valuable (energy reduction per litre) moreso than biodiesel.

Scoundreller··on Diesel prices in U.S. top $6 a gallon for first time
Isn’t that sulfur more valuable than ever now?
