ScotterC··on The best 4K monitor doesn’t exist yet
I absolutely love wirecutter. If they're not already making ends meet then I'd happily donate for this kind of honesty and quality reviews.
ScotterC··on New York Startup Artsy Raises $18.5M to Become Pandora for Fine Art
You may be thinking of Artsicle [1]. Art.sy on the other hand has always had their sights set on a Pandora model.

ScotterC··on Making ActiveRecord 2x faster
I think the main reason for this is that there's no 'convention' to profiling a gem. No one's built something that's super simple, off the shelf and easy to use. If someone did, and it got enough traction, it could be as much a part of the gem building process as bundler or jeweler is right now.
ScotterC··on Why Stack Overflow in Portuguese?
Yup. Matz immediately came to mind. Also, to the question of english but not native would be Salvatore of Redis fame.
ScotterC··on Back To My Roots
Cost of travel is directly proportional to how fast you want to go. You can get by very cheaply if you have no deadlines. Hitch hiking and teaching English classes leisurely can pay your way.

Having deadlines and taking flights, being picky about lodging - this is what costs money while traveling.

ScotterC··on We Are Giving Ourselves Cancer
Interestingly enough, flight attendants wear a lot of dry-cleaned clothes which has been directly correlated to breast cancer.

Apologize for off-topic, but what's wrong with target="_blank" in an anchor?
ScotterC··on Bing is blank?
I noticed this a while ago that it doesn't load with https. Can't believe they still haven't fixed that.
ScotterC··on Stolen cobalt-60 found in Mexico; curious thieves likely doomed
I must have gotten mixed up. The wiki page has enough info rectify it. 5 year half life beta emitter is definitely serious.

ScotterC··on Stolen cobalt-60 found in Mexico; curious thieves likely doomed
Linked failed. Repost please.
ScotterC··on Stolen cobalt-60 found in Mexico; curious thieves likely doomed
Yea. And unlike cobalt 60, mercury doesn't decay. Hard to get that stuff out of your system.
ScotterC··on Stolen cobalt-60 found in Mexico; curious thieves likely doomed
I was surprised as well that they said they would die. I find that very unlikely without more details.
ScotterC··on Stolen cobalt-60 found in Mexico; curious thieves likely doomed
Ahh but that was Cesium 137. Much much more dangerous
ScotterC··on Stolen cobalt-60 found in Mexico; curious thieves likely doomed
Cobalt 60 isn't particularly dangerous. I remember holding it in my bare hand in chemistry lab (encouraged by the teacher). Also, I'm never worried about when this stuff goes missing because it's so easy to detect to the smallest measurement - which means it's usually found quickly as was the case here.

Now if this was Cesium 137 that would be a wholly different matter

ScotterC··on Never Heard of It

Point of reference. A chipotle burrito is about 2000 mg of sodium as well.
ScotterC··on LinkedIn's Series B Pitch to Greylock: Pitch Advice for Entrepreneurs
I think it was more a sign of the times and the fact that it was a B round. You can elaborate a bit at the B stage.
ScotterC··on Banksy Art Sale in Central Park [video]
You can price something for any amount. Whether it sells at all or in vast quantities is another matter :)
ScotterC··on Hostnames
I remember recognizing at CMU that the many of the computers were named after Phish songs. Always enjoyed working at 'weekapaug'
ScotterC··on SublimeGit: Full-featured Git integration for Sublime Text
Our team has been using it for the last few months and absolutely love it. Best side effect is much more descriptive commit messages. Thanks @miped
ScotterC··on There's a .00006% Chance of Building a Billion Dollar Company
However, it's quite easy for us to believe our aptitude will make us the exception. Adding a numerical grain of salt is helpful for the evaluation.
ScotterC··on Why have SVG images not yet replaced PNG on the web?
I would say the main reason is because there's not a 'Save As SVG' in photoshop. Most non tech people haven't heard of SVG and by the time they have, they already have a process for making images and the switch doesn't have enough apparent value on the surface.
ScotterC··on Rainyday.js
Some, hopefully, constructive criticism:

The rain drops are too spherical as they traverse the screen. The friction plus surface tension of a water on glass pulls the tail out significantly farther then represented and also varies on whether the drop is following a path that's already been traversed and therefore has less friction. It would be really really cool to see that effect added in.

ScotterC··on Cocktails for programmers
She should :)
ScotterC··on T-Shirt Printing API
Ahhh in the dropdown. Thanks
ScotterC··on Engineering the $325,000 Burger
I can't believe in the entire article they didn't mention who would be eating the 5 ounce burger. Who gets to try it!?
ScotterC··on Escape Velocity
Man I wish. Enough talk about Monkey Island. Escape Velocity was a fantastic adventure game that could use some more sequels.
ScotterC··on In Search of the Cookie Dough Tree
And people think radiation is bad. At least radiation decays. The chemicals in this superfund site stay around for ever!
ScotterC··on The Story Of A Failed Startup And A Founder Driven To Suicide
I disagree. I think it's very healthy to open up the conversation again. I've been surprised at how much it hasn't been talked about in the last few months (not referring to online but in person). It was weird to be at startup events shortly after Jody's passing with people who knew him well and have absolutely no mention of it.
