ScottFree··on Merge tag 'inclusive-terminology' into Linux kernel
It's not inevitable. It can be resisted. It takes a leader who can stand up to the pressure and say no. That's not a trivial thing. The pressure is considerable, especially these days.
ScottFree··on PG: The biggest source of stress for me at YC was running HN
That reminds me of this webcomic from 2001.

ScottFree··on Tesla drops Model Y price by $3k
> Well service depends on where you live.

Tell me about it. I have to drive about 100 miles to the nearest Audi dealership to get my Audi fixed. The nearest Tesla service center is 180 miles away. I really want a Tesla, but I'd pretty much have to do all of the servicing myself.

> Ten years from now no one will even remember or care that master/slave was a term in computing.

I don't think it will take them that long to regret this change. Now that everyone knows linux will just roll over, they'll push for greater changes to the "Code of Conduct." Then developers will get deplatformed at an alarming rate. And I'll have my popcorn ready. It'll be quite the show.

ScottFree··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
Did they ever fix that memory leak?
ScottFree··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
> Talking to other Mac users, this seems to be common knowledge - I guess only Windows users moving to OSX should be wary.

It's common knowledge because very single Mac OS X user has lost data due to this bug that Apple has refused to fix for years.

ScottFree··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
Because it actually works, most of the time. The controller isn't horrible. The commonly used apps, like Twitch, Youtube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc all work.

I got so fed up with my Samsung SmartTV and it's horrible controller and glitchy apps that I run my tv through an old laptop now.

I tried a FireTV stick for a bit. It's wasn't powerful enough to drive my 4k tv.

ScottFree··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
Sysadmins do.
ScottFree··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
It's not just Desktop OS's. Mobile, TV and Car OS's are mostly terrible as well. Are OS's really that hard to do well?
ScottFree··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
Have you tried any other TV OS? FireTV is the best of a bad bunch.
ScottFree··on Refined Hacker News
The gifs in the readme showing the functionality you want to highlight is a nice touch. I wish more projects did that.
ScottFree··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
Do you have any regrets with sticking with mercurial instead of hopping on the git bandwagon?
ScottFree··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
I switched from Evernote to Notion 6 months ago. Their block-based editing system drives me up the wall. But, they really nailed their media integration in a way nobody else has, so I continue to use it.

"we mainly use phabricator now at my day job (which I love love love)"

What do you love about phabricator? It looks interesting, even if it is written in php. (just joking...)

ScottFree··on Should I buy an Intel Mac today or wait to buy an Arm-based Mac?
I'd buy an Intel mac from 2015. The modern ones all have their well-documented problems. The ARM based macs will almost certainly have a small period of instability and incompatibility when they first launch, just like the Intel macs did.
ScottFree··on A dev, designer, and a PM are asked the same question: What is UX?

ScottFree··on Open letter from a Texas county judge about his Covid mask order
Your premise is flawed. Yellow shirts don't kill people. Not wearing a mask does not kill people. Letting a TSA officer fondle your groin doesn't save people's lives. It's all security theater.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

ScottFree··on Lemmy, an open-source federated Reddit alternative, gets funding for development
I'm extremely disappointed your icon isn't a picture of Lemmy from Motorhead.
ScottFree··on Ask HN: What are the technical justifications for keeping .DS_Store?
> I am finishing "a proper missing, a dream File Manager" for Mac OS

Can I sign up to be notified when it's released? :)

ScottFree··on Fixing Apple's Engineering in an Hour [video]
If the CPUs on your macbook pros are dying, you're doing something very wrong. If they're not, then you're creating an issue where none exists.
ScottFree··on Fixing Apple's Engineering in an Hour [video]
> I don't think that's terribly useful.

The entire overclocking community would disagree with you.

ScottFree··on Fixing Apple's Engineering in an Hour [video]
> A combination of good cooling + a tweaked power management profile to accommodate the better thermals should give a substantial performance increase.

Give it a try and report back.

edit: Wow, HN has changed. There was a time when experimentation was encouraged here.

ScottFree··on Fixing Apple's Engineering in an Hour [video]
Watch the whole video. They managed to keep the laptop ice cold with a custom heatsink, but even then only managed to eek out a 12% performance improvement. As it turns out, Apple actually knows what they're doing.
ScottFree··on Private Pilot Ground School
Crop dusting is still a thing. I live in the middle of nowhere and there are several strips of flat grassland that are landing strips for crop dusters.
ScottFree··on Wireless Is a Trap
By that rationale, walking is deadly. Breathing is deadly. Sleeping is deadly. This is not a valid argument supporting the stance that wifi is deadly.
ScottFree··on Wireless Is a Trap
If that were the case, there would be no African tribes left alive.
ScottFree··on Remove some offensive/archaic terminology from OpenSSL
It doesn't. That's not the point. It never was.

ScottFree··on Ask HN: Why can't we solve the app store monopoly problem?
I'm talking exclusively about the US. Different markets have different market shares. Different countries have different monopoly and antitrust laws. Limiting it to the biggest market, and the one most germane to HN, is what makes it possible to have a discussion. Otherwise, we're all just talking to ourselves.
ScottFree··on Ask HN: Why can't we solve the app store monopoly problem?
> Isn't this extremely obvious?

Yes and no.

The obvious answer is to make your own device with your own OS and make it better than iOS or android. That used to be difficult, but the quality of iOS and android has been declining for a long time. We're at the point where an alternative could be viable for somebody with deep enough pockets and the know-how.

The not-so obvious answer is we have lots of evidence over the years of the tech sector engaging in anticompetitive and illegal actions with very little consequence. Apple, Google and Facebook colluding not to poach each other's employees. Intel threatening to cut off relations with any computer manufacturer that deals with AMD.

It's very likely that Google and Apple would use their influence and power to kill any viable competitor. So, how do you deal with that?
