Scorponok··on Microsoft's Surface 2 will replace paper manuals on all Delta aircraft
I read on the recent story about FAA regulations that current cockpit iPads are on all the time during takeoff and landing, although I suspect they'll be in airplane mode whenever they're on the plane.

Presumably in case of an emergency, the pilot would always be able to call the control tower to confirm whatever details, even if their tablet was dead, so I don't think it would be a major issue.

Scorponok··on If your business depends on Flash, have an exit plan ready
I'm pretty sure that if your business depends on Flash, you should have started implementing an exit plan a couple of years ago by now.
Scorponok··on How to Hire
For candidates who already have jobs, how would "auditioning" work? Is it assumed that they'd take time off from their current job to do it?
Scorponok··on Observations from a Tipless Restaurant
I would assume to stop the restaurant owner/manager taking some (or all) of the tips.
Scorponok··on Startup Investing Trends
Conflict of interest. If you're advising startup X in the "deliver food to people at lunchtime" space, it could very well be a conflict to do the same to startup Y in the same space, as they'd be competitors.
Scorponok··on How a bug in ported garbage-collected code trashed our iOS app
Aren't you living dangerously by still using garbage collection on iOS at this point? Apple keep making dire statements about how everyone needs to stop using it, so I'd be worried that iOS8 will just remove it entirely, meaning apps that use GC just wouldn't work at all on that OS...
Scorponok··on Your First iOS App – 100% Programmatically
Our app has ~15 view controllers laid out in a single storyboard, and we haven't had any issues with them. We only have one iOS developer, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

We don't really use segues, though, since they seem to add complexity if you want to pass data around between the view controllers.

Scorponok··on Automatic: Your Smart Driving Assistant
According to the video you can clear the code, the example if if the code reports "Loose gas cap".
Scorponok··on Microsoft’s 128GB Surface Pro Sells Out At Online Store Just Hours After Launch
Which are usually followed by Apple saying "We're delighted to have sold [a crapload] of [whatever] this weekend, a record amount etc etc". That's why Apple sellouts are interesting, because they actually tell you how many they've sold. If Microsoft does the same thing, kudos to them, but for the surface RT launch they didn't (IIRC).
Scorponok··on Eric Schmidt Plans To Sell 3.2M Google Shares
Even if google itself isn't going anywhere, if the stock market falls over again it could cut a big chunk out of the value of everything, including "safe" companies like google.
Scorponok··on How Much Will Your Taxes Jump?
Can you imagine trying to raise 2 children on less than $260k? Thanks Obama :(
Scorponok··on Netflix Goes Super HD
I assume they'll want to set up edge caches at all the ISPs or something before going live with this, to save on their bandwidth costs?
Scorponok··on nil, Nil, NULL, NSNull
This is no longer true when using ARC. See the "Stack Variables Are Initialized with nil" section of http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#releasenotes/Objecti...

"Using ARC, strong, weak, and autoreleasing stack variables are now implicitly initialized with nil."

This doesn't affect plain C variables, but it would solve the issue you had above.

Scorponok··on Poll: Do you select text while reading?
This gets annoying with sites that have actions defined when you click on words, or bring up a popup window when you click, etc. :(
Scorponok··on Why consistency in icons is important and how to achieve it
I felt that the inconsistency this post talks about was a good way to emphasize the difference between the "launch an app" icons and the "perform an operation" icons.
Scorponok··on California Regulator Issues Citations And Fines Against Uber, Lyft, And SideCar
So is the problem Uber / Lyft / whatever, or is problem a lack of licensed taxis? If there were more licensed taxis available, women wouldn't have to take a shady unlicensed cab.
Scorponok··on How Apple Avoids Paying Billions in Taxes
Because as soon as they do that, there's less of a reason to spend a lot of money setting up an expensive corporate HQ in Ireland.
Scorponok··on Drinking at work: the boredom of boozeless business
"Another recent paper from the journal Consciousness and Cognition by psychologists at the University of Illinois confirms what many have long suspected: a couple of drinks makes workers more creative."

That's definitely what we need more of, investment bankers being "creative".

Scorponok··on Microsoft abandon Metro name due to legal challenge
Someone really dropped the ball on this. They should have had this figured out before they used the name "Metro" for the first time.
Scorponok··on Visas for entrepreneurs
I went through the E-2 process a few years ago. IIRC you can pay an extra $1000 to make your application a "high priority" one, which cuts the guaranteed response time from something like 3 months to 30 days.

When I did it as a high-priority application, I got an initial response saying "we need more data" within 2-3 weeks (from what I remember), then the final approval 2-3 weeks after I submitted that info.

Scorponok··on Google (Potentially) Blows the Door Off Oracle's Copyright Claims
Do you have to register it with the copyright office as soon as you create it, or could you create it, register it 10 years later, then immediately sue someone who copied it?
Scorponok··on Why Erlang?
Sure, if you like. I like (for example) the RAII and templating features of C++, but if you want to just use C go for it. I guess what I really mean is, what does Erlang offer beyond "concurrency is easy if you don't share state"?
Scorponok··on Why Erlang?
I've been curious about this for a while: If you can do concurrent processing so easily by message passing, why not just write Java or C++ that just passes messages around instead of sharing state? That way you don't have to learn a whole new programming language to do it.
Scorponok··on IOS 5's "Cleaning" Behavior
Maybe the solution is to make it a choice for the user? An option to "clean up documents when space is low on the device" in the instapaper options. If checked, stuff gets stored in cache. If not, in documents.

That way, the default behavior is that "download something = want to keep it on device", but users can do the other one too if they want. I don't think the option is particularly useful, but it might make the app reviewer happy?

Scorponok··on Should I Change My Password?
My first thought was that this would have fields for me to enter my email address and password, under the pretense of "we will test your password to see if it's secure". Wonder how many people you could get with that...
Scorponok··on The Unwritten Laws of Engineering: What the Beginner Needs to Learn at Once
“One of his jobs after an explosion was to plot where the body parts landed, and to figure out what caused the explosion.”

And I thought my job had bad days.
