SchemaLoad··on Dear Software Makers
The market also demands meth and all kinds of things that are bad for people. It's time to seriously treat social media like the drug it is and ban all addiction mechanics.

Algorithmic recommendation engines, infinite scrolling, notifications for suggested posts, daily rewards, all of it needs to be banned.

SchemaLoad··on Cities Are Forced to Funnel License Plate Data to a Federal Surveillance Program
Trying to trick licence plate reader cameras is not realistic. A widespread network of cameras can easily detect anomalies like a plate that doesn't match the car type, or the same plate existing in two places. It might make you feel good to think there is some anarchist solution out of this, but it isn't going to work.

The tech is incredibly powerful and there isn't really anything you can do as an individual to avoid it. You better hope the people who run it have improving society in their best interests.

SchemaLoad··on Cities Are Forced to Funnel License Plate Data to a Federal Surveillance Program
None of this holds a candle to having a functional government that works for the benefit of the public.

A/B testing isn't about creativity, it's retention maxxing. It's what drives youtube face in every thumbnail, loud titles that don't say much, etc. This feature will optimise the actual content itself to be the most attention holding, overstimulating slop possible to synthisise.
SchemaLoad··on Dear Software Makers
We have just gone too far with engagement maximising. A/B testing titles and thumbnails was probably too far but we just keep going. At some point society needs to say stop, tech is addictive enough. We maximised way beyond what was reasonable and we need to wind it back.

Give Google, Meta and the rest an award showing they beat human psychology and now we can encorage people to put the phone down and go outside again.

SchemaLoad··on Dots: Always-on agents
I feel like all of these proposed use cases are kind of useless. Or only useful for a short time. Sure Muse might be able to scrape apartment listings, but apartment listing websites already have a search function. They could just integrate LLMs directly to do the same thing but as a first party feature.
SchemaLoad··on Dots: Always-on agents
Why should they join in on a shoveling cash in to the fire competition? The winning move here is to just sit and watch the others waste all of their resource and to just take the free open source model that comes out at the end.
SchemaLoad··on Dots: Always-on agents
The problem is the agents keep going off the rails and will hack external servers to achieve the goal you give it. Letting them run full speed overnight and waking up to find they have commit multiple crimes is not ideal.

The recompilation scene has exploded recently. Seems like it could be the future of retrogaming where you get an actual native build of every game. Also opens the door to full mod support of old games as well as being able to run more demanding games on hand held devices that previously didn't have the power to run certain emulators.

>Also, a lot of AAA games do not work on steam machine because of aggressive anticheat and DRM

That said, these games fall pretty much exclusively in the competitive shooter space. Which isn't the kind of thing you usually sit down at the couch with a controller to play. If you aren't in to competitive online games then proton has basically 100% compatibility.

SchemaLoad··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
It's a very buried feature, but the deck actually supports home directory encryption as well, though you have to SSH in from another machine to set it up. I really think it should be made default because of the very real use case where users use desktop mode, sign in to things in the browser and then take the device out in public where it could be stolen.
SchemaLoad··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
This is fairly outdated, it was certainly true in 2013 but these days xbox is pretty much dead, playstation is stable but flat for a long time, PC has overtaken both, and mobile has shot to the moon.

The Steam Machine is a very niche product, but PC gaming is the main gaming platform outside of phone games.

Immutability has been the greatest improvement on the linux desktop in a long time. I'd never recommend a traditional distro to someone who can't fix or install linux themselves because mutable distros tend to grow warts over time, and diverge from a clean state. Eventually requiring a reinstall to fix.

But immutable distros stay in a clean state, updates become trivial and safe, and can roll back in case of a failure.

The line between console and blurred significantly lately. Consoles became X86 machines running PC OSs but locked down. PCs gained options for console hardware with the same OSs.

These days the only difference between PC and Console is having a locked down OS. Which makes consoles seem purely a worse product, but the difference used to be a lot more.

SchemaLoad··on How did AMD Ryzen get 50% faster in two years?
Actual gameplay capabilities haven't been limited by hardware for a long time now. You can implement any mechanics you want on modern hardware, the only thing limited is graphics, resolution and framerate.

It's relatively easy to allow powerful hardware to just run the game at 4k 120fps highest settings while weaker hardware runs exactly the same game at lower graphic settings.

SchemaLoad··on Meta VR Glasses
Facebook/Meta has a system that decides if it thinks you are lying about your name or if it just isn't sure, if you get flagged for ID verification. These days it might also be because they think you are under 18, but the ID verification system existed long long before age checking.

If you haven't seen it, it's probably because your account is old and they have scraped enough contact lists to believe your name is real.

SchemaLoad··on Meta VR Glasses
Facebook was doing ID checks well before this because they want to stop ban evasion.

ID checks just came to the Quest because they forced facebook accounts which already had ID checks on it. They should never have made facebook accounts mandatory for playing games.

Oblivion remastered is an absolute dumpster fire for performance in general.

Given the massive increase in hardware prices lately, we are going to have to get by with mid range or even low end hardware for a lot longer. Studios will be forced to actually optimise games to not run like shit on a sub $8000 PC.

Every game should be targeting the switch 2 and steam deck in terms of power.

SchemaLoad··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
A change can pass CI without actually making the change required. The tests test that the code does what it does, not that it does what the user wanted.

AI is really good at making tests that pass even if the change itself is wrong.

SchemaLoad··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
I have junior devs submitting huge PRs with multi paragraph descriptions about load baring root causes and "why this works". Then I ask them directly what are the steps to test this and they don't know, they have never run the code.

Rather than entertain the idea of reviewing the code I just send it back to them until they work out how to run it. And almost always they submit a new change because the last one didn't actually work, despite how confident and articulate claude was to them.

SchemaLoad··on Astra for Law
It's probably somewhat of a zero sum game. Both sides lawyers have AI tools which probably just keeps them on a level playing field rather than actually making anything cheaper or faster.

I honestly think vibe coding your own extensions would be safer than using 3rd party ones which are malware more often than not.

Apple themselves says it's a combination of on device and hosted Gemini models. But it seems Apple is hosting Gemini models themselves with far better privacy than the regular Gemini product.

All of these AI demos have the same vibe "You'll save so much time now AI can reword your mum's text messages". I don't know what these SV guys are doing, but writing shopping lists, talking to my friends, or booking a haircut doesn't take me very much time at all.

What I want is an AI that detects I'm scrolling social media and closes the app. That would save me many hours a week vs trying to save 30 seconds on reserving a table for dinner.

There's a fix on the keyboard, it's got a little sun icon, next to the escape key.
SchemaLoad··on OpenAI bots knew about the RubyGems caching vulnerability
If it were physically possible to run LLMs on IoT devices we would already have a global outbreak.
SchemaLoad··on OpenAI bots knew about the RubyGems caching vulnerability
It wouldn't help much. Why would you install a gem other than to run it? And if you run it, it can execute arbitary code.

What we need is actually sandboxed dev environments.

SchemaLoad··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
What TV do you have that has 8 HDMI inputs?
SchemaLoad··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
Also helps to cut down on your number of cables once you see you have 5 USB-B cables when at most you need 1. I ziplock bagged all of my cables and cut them down to one of each type. These days I throw out the included cable with devices immediately rather than throwing it in with all the others. Thankfully a lot of new devices don't include cables now so the wastage is cut down.
SchemaLoad··on M-DISC – DVD/Blu-ray compatible discs that may last up to 1000 years
I think it's more the size of the data rather than digital vs analog. you could have digital data stored on punch cards or say a large array of dip switches and it would last ages, but the storage density is terrible. Meanwhile disks and ssds store massive amounts of data on a very tiny space but it's prone to corruption over time.

Punch cards that are laser cut from metal would probably outlast stone tablets.
