Schattenbaer··on Repairing my mug with Kintsugi
You can even get (tobacco) smoking pipes decorated using urushi. It's made me wonder about the temperature stability, as a pipe can (but ideally shouldn't) get fairly hot.

Tsuge is a good brand to search for if you want to see exanples. Cost-wise such pipes start around the two hundred US mark.

Was about to leave a similar comment. A lot of this was pretty neutral, some of it heart-warming, and there isn't a lot of evidence of negativity here. And I loved the little illustrations, all in all it felt like someone who took effort to make their environment prettier.
Schattenbaer··on Making old orchards new again
They are admittedly not super, but for the space we have they provide a good amount of joy.
Schattenbaer··on Making old orchards new again
We didn't have space for an orchard, but we did have space for a single combination tree.

A combination tree is rootstock with multiple apple varieties grafted on to it, often designed so that the different varieties can pollinate each other. Our specific tree has Chehalis, Honeycrisp, Beni Shogun Fuji and Jonagold varieties on it.

Other ways to grow apples in a limited space are columnar apples (they grow fruit close to the trunk and are nearly vertical) and dwarf rootstock.

Scarlet Sentinel, Golden Sentinel, and Urban Tasty are popular columnar varieties.

For rootstock their are specialized rootstock nurseries - and rootstock determines the size of the final tree more than the grafted variety does.

M27 (Super Dwarf) is an extremely compact rootstock that can be used to grow apples in containers, as the tree will max out around 2m. Bud 9 and B10 dwarf are also small, but will grow to around 3.5m.

If you want rootstock that will live around a century, you probably need Antonovka Standard, which will grow to about 7m.

Schattenbaer··on Quality is a hard sell in big tech
Part of this is a problem of quantification and immediacy.

Extra time spent doing the work well is easier to quantify as a cost than some issues down the line.

Low quality costs money, but only in time, and it's hard to pin down an exact cost. How much of an outage was caused by a quality shortcut? What percentage of our morale issues are caused by working with bad code? And how much, exactly, do those issues cost us? Was some specific quality compromise one of the straws that help break the camel's back?

Much harder questions, and the causes are often not clearly linked to their effects. Combine that with the human predilection for shortsightedness and our dislike of delayed gratification and you have a system that is stacked against quality.

Schattenbaer··on It was almost impossible to make the blue LED [video]
The Nichia 519A is a one of the favourite LEDs in the enthusiast flashlight world.

It's a high CRI quite bright LED, and I have to shamefully admit that I specifically specced a light in the past with this LED.

Before I knew about this, that is.

We'll, that changed. Would be very interesting to know what the tipping point was that made Minecraft enter general popular culture.

Schattenbaer··on Home schooling's rise from fringe to fastest-growing form of education
Giving someone in need some food lestens suffering. That lestening of suffering is an observable and easily mentally modeled outcome rooted in the mundane world.

Acting so that we decrease suffering, increase wellbeing, and otherwise reduce harm is moral in and of itself without any higher source.

Schattenbaer··on The Quest to Recreate a Lost and 'Terrifying' Medieval Mead
I've made this, but I have also used burnt honey as an adjunct in making imperial stouts.

It adds a toasted marshmallow note that goes very well with the roasted barley flavour.

One thing interesting thing is that boiling and burning honey attracts bees; I took to doing so at night and still bees would get into the house. These were African honey bees so may be a species thing, as they have a different temperament than other honey bees.

I remember that one university in my previous home town cross-bred Italian and African honeybees in an attempt to make a more docile bee.

Schattenbaer··on A Flesh-Eating Bacterium Is Creeping North as Oceans Warm
Jeeze I remember this killing an older man[1] on the Garden Route coast in South Africa while visiting said area.

According to the news releases at the time it needs the perfect mix of sea and fresh water at specific temperatures.

We opted to swim kilometers from river mouths to be safer.

Schattenbaer··on South Africa imported a power station's worth of solar panels(3.4GW) in 6 months

The solar in question is mainly being installed by individuals at their own cost because the power grid is failing around them due to corruption and mismanagement.

Schattenbaer··on Positive association between altitude and suicide in U.S. counties
Interesting. The WHO lists Lesotho as having the highest per-capita suicide rate in the world.

Lesotho is the country with the highest low point (1,400 metres / 4,593 ft) of any country in the world.

More than 80% of Lesotho lies above 1,800 metres (5,906 ft).

Schattenbaer··on Why the Remote-Work Debate Stays So Heated
Only tangentially related, but when you have (a) a company that might want to lay off a percentage of workers and (b) don't want the negative press of said layoffs, then a return-to-the-office policy is an effective tool in the corporate toolbelt.

I agree with what you're saying.

But to add a bit of colour to the incident: the Kori Bustard is the biggest flying bird in Africa, and it's mostly ground dwelling.

Seems like some bad luck was involved too, and I wonder if the same damage will occur with a smaller bird?

Schattenbaer··on Guitar Effects Guidebook, Vol. 20 [pdf]
If you want a delightful hobby, then I can recommend building your own guitar pedals.

It combines music, electronics, general nerding out (e.g. debating germanium VS silicon diodes), and some visual design if you want to make the enclosures pretty. You might even be able to sell some.

I started by building a kit pedal with one of my kids as a weekend project.

Some search terms to get you started: build your own clone, diy pedal schematics, tag board music effects.

Schattenbaer··on Streetlights Are Turning Purple
Some interesting material regarding degradation of LED lights here:

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/330676601_Degradati...

They note that "Chromaticity shift in the output light is one of the most common failures in LEDs [...] [Chromaticity shift] is considered as one of the most important measures of quality and is often studied and reported" (page 6) so it sounds like this could hardly be new info to the manufacturer.

I'm struggling to parse the point you're making, paraphrasing: "Systemic issues in SA causes more money to be lost than sending money to Uber Eats... thus the parent's point of not supporting Uber Eats is moot"?

I think you can choose to not support a company that isn't playing by South African labour rules and rather support a local alternative even if the government is corrupt. And that doing a little bit is better than doing nothing, even if it's not a complete fix.

Apologies if I misunderstood, though - I do agree with you that there are bigger issues at play too in the country. But I do think it doesn't mean we shouldn't also fix the smaller issues if they are in reach. Low-hanging fruit and all that.
