Scharkenberg··on Show HN: Thoreau BASIC – What if BASIC hadn't gone out of fashion?
C# has gained tons of features and improvements of existing ones, VB.NET has unfortunately been fully ignored. Not even put in the back burner, just left to die, apparently. Which is sad, because I find it more legible and beginner-friendly than any C-derived languages.
Scharkenberg··on EU's Microsoft Teams alternative draws bad reviews from officials

Scharkenberg··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
> Japan is clearly a wonderful society

I don't think so.

> seeing as how many people want to visit and immigrate.

That's true for Qatar and UAE too. Wonderful societies.

Scharkenberg··on Excel now supports multiple values in a single cell
The introduction of the Office ribbon was one of the biggest improvements in software that I have ever experienced.

Off-topic: managing @Risk licenses in a fully on-prem, no-internet environment has been such a pain in the neck.

By amount of money it is most definitely Qatar.

Scharkenberg··on I hate you Microsoft
> it was working just fine a few months ago

Admins can reallocate licenses of different types among accounts or change them completely. That it worked fine a few months ago means nothing. Your account currently doesn't have a desktop entitlement at all, be it macOS or Windows.

Talk to your M365 admins and beware of lies they might tell you to cover up the truth.

Scharkenberg··on I hate you Microsoft
In this context they don't. There is no license where one can use PowerPoint on Windows, but not on macOS. It would not work on Windows either, because the problem is that his account is only entitled to the web version of the Office apps. The exact wording of the message he got is platform-specific and it doesn't even mention Windows at all.
Scharkenberg··on CCC invites all model citizens to 40C3
Thanks for the tip! I've never attended anything like tyis before.
Scharkenberg··on I hate you Microsoft
Henrique should take it up to his university. When I was a student, mine used to provide me with an account that could use desktop apps on Windows and Mac. Educational institutions get very cheap license bundles compared to enterprises btw.

(Also funny that he says we should not use proprietary software, but ignores his own usage of macOS.)

The writing style is similar to the other articles by the same author. He has been doing this for years. I have no idea what your problem with the actual content is.
Scharkenberg··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
I'm not American. You can say that Murica is up to no good, but RuZZia is definitely up to much much worse. It's way more oppressive and repressive by an order of magnitude. Employees at Yandex have to censor stuff about Putin and the war (see egorfine's screenshot) or they risk getting defenestrated, death by polonium, or death by torture. There is no "First Amendment". Putin's wishes are the law. He is trying very hard to destroy liberal democracies in Europe and around the world.

Of course Google is morally much better than Yandex. What sane mind would even question this? The fact that I'm getting downvoted just shows how out of touch this bubble is with real life.

Scharkenberg··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
The quintessential HN comment questioning the obvious.

Yandex does Putin's bidding much much further than any western search engine ever meddled with their results for political purposes. Yandex employees' lives would be actively at risk if they didn't.

Sometimes I really wish a hard reality check would meet the people making such comments from the comfort of their programming chair or from thousands of kilometers away.

Scharkenberg··on Firefox 157 will include JPEG XL by default on all platforms

Can you elaborate on your claims? As it currently stands, I’m only reading meaningless drivel from you.
Scharkenberg··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
It is literally the MSN Weather website packaged as a WebView2 app.
Scharkenberg··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
Yes, using an already-running Edge instance saves a bunch of memory. Also, this approach has the advantage of allowing all of your browser extensions to modify your Web-App experience. WebView2 doesn't relay Edge extensions.
Scharkenberg··on For Linux kernel vulnerabilities, there is no heads-up to distributions
It is the opposite for me. I did not know who they are and now I have a positive opinion of them.

Scharkenberg··on Windows 11 adds AI agent that runs in background with access to personal folders
I have no idea how you got to "Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair" given that I literally blamed the slow OS disk drive inside the computer based on thousands of data points on my end.
Scharkenberg··on Windows 11 adds AI agent that runs in background with access to personal folders
Upgrade that PC's OS drive to a NVMe. Seriously. We manage thousands of PCs at work and ever since we got laptop models with NVMe drives, updates are a breeze with 6 ± 3 minutes of total downtime.

Scharkenberg··on Windows 11 24H2 hoards 8.63 GB of junk you can't delete
We just began testing the upgrade to 24H2 this week and haven't noticed the issue on any of our test machines (about 80 amd64 devices and VMs so far).
Scharkenberg··on Ask HN: How to emulate a smartphone on a computer for banking apps?
You could hope that Android Studio's emulator / modded Waydroid or WSA would work for a while. At most you'd be buying time. Seriously, just keep the phone and fix your own unwanted habits instead. You'd be wasting your time fighting the checks and blocks they have put in place. At some point strict hardware attestation will be both very strong and ubiquitous enough that it will be impossible to run apps with high security requirements in custom environments. Google and Apple have no incentive to let loose either, unless they are forced to, which I unfortunately don't see happening.
