SapporoChris··on The technology to eradicate mosquito-borne disease exists

SapporoChris··on Direct retinal projection display for smart glasses using a meta-optic mirror
Did you file for a patent in Japan? Foreign countries are not bound by United States patents; U.S. patent rights only apply within the United States.
SapporoChris··on Direct retinal projection display for smart glasses using a meta-optic mirror
"TDK demonstrates the world’s first direct retinal projection display for smart glasses using a meta-optic mirror". The qualifier is different. "using a meta-optic mirror" versus "using oscillating mirrors"

I appreciate your comment on the history.

SapporoChris··on ICE Has Been Dumping Protester Photos into a Palantir Database
United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was established in 2003.
SapporoChris··on ICE Has Been Dumping Protester Photos into a Palantir Database
Deportations occurred before ICE and deportations can occur after ICE is dissolved. I'm genuinely curious at your questions. Do you believe people could just sneak across the border and live in United States forever before ICE existed, and that it somehow stopped with the formation of ICE?

SapporoChris··on Show HN: Hamilton – a no-internet Android health dashboard, named after my dog
An app named Hamilton. "I named the app after my dog..." Who is your dog named after? Is this a dog whistle?

SapporoChris··on My weird new hobby: Wandering around Tokyo on Google Maps
Wandering around Tokyo on Google Maps is fun. However, it pales in comparison to walking around Tokyo.
SapporoChris··on Back and shoulder surgery is often worse than useless
It might work, it might be quackery.

If there are any scientific studies or governments that have approved the use of Wolverine blend, I could not find them. I'd be interested if anyone else has better information.

SapporoChris··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
I do not think so. Most insulin can last 28 days outside the fridge, but not frozen insulin.

SapporoChris··on There's a high chance of devices being sold with GrapheneOS preinstalled in 2027
What stopped me from buying flagship phones is the repair costs for phones are far too expensive in relationship to the value of the phone. Results will vary, but waterproofing usually diminishes after a repair.
SapporoChris··on 7 out of 9 Planetary Boundaries are breached
"How can we be so arrogant? The planet is, was, and always will be stronger than us. We can't destroy it; if we overstep the mark, the planet will simply erase us from its surface and carry on existing. Why don't they start talking about not letting the planet destroy us?" — Paulo Coelho
SapporoChris··on BYD Slashes Price of Electric Car and Becomes Cheapest in Australia [video]
Apologies, I was looking at European Union. I see Norway is not imposing tariffs and there may be variance in other non EU countries as well. Thank you for pointing out the issue.
SapporoChris··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
The key word is possibly. Any statement with possibly in it could be true or false, it is speculation.
SapporoChris··on BYD Slashes Price of Electric Car and Becomes Cheapest in Australia [video]
"BYD faces a 17% tariff on imported electric vehicles in EU, in addition to the standard 10% base rate."

"BYD has sold 19,241 fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Europe last month, a 255% soar from the same period a year ago."

Small numbers, but I am pretty sure they're in Europe. https://eletric-vehicles.com/byd/byd-sales-in-europe-more-th...

Edited: Tariffs vary across Europe, particularly in non EU nations.

SapporoChris··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
"She remained with it for several hours and possibly even days." Interesting article, but that comment veers into speculation. Speculation diminishes the value of a scientific article.
SapporoChris··on New evidence for hidden chambers beyond Tutankhamun's tomb
No, I don't. Whenever I learn I've spent time believing something that turned out to be false I always feel a sense of regret.
SapporoChris··on New evidence for hidden chambers beyond Tutankhamun's tomb
A skull might be a warning sign to some people, but it is in no way a universal warning for all people. One example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calavera

I don't understand the fond reminiscing. The face on Mars is an optical illusion, an example of Pareidolia.

I sincerely hope that no one believes there are monuments or any such constructions on Mars.

SapporoChris··on More than 100k people in Japan are now aged 100 or older
Of course the Japanese government hasn't been sitting idle for 16 years.

https://www.demographic-research.org/articles/volume/26/11 "In Japan 234,354 people registered before 1910 remained on the family registers in 2010, without being crossed out. They would have been 100 years old at least and represent 0.5% of the births recorded between 1872 and 1910. The impact of this group on life expectancy statistics, however, is effectively nil. "

SapporoChris··on Please don't rearrange our shoes when we turn up, paramedics in Japan urge
I suspect that there are several levels of severity in an emergency and that when appropriate the responders forego removal of shoes. It's a low depth article, they didn't go into details.

SapporoChris··on Flock-style scanners now track WiFi/Bluetooth identity from devices in your car
Can this not be mitigated by simply turning off WiFi and Bluetooth on the devices?
SapporoChris··on Why I've tracked every single piece of clothing I've worn for three years
Interesting data, but it seems overly complex and could easily be simplified by having less clothes. Example I have so few shirts that I wear each one on a weekly basis. Because of the frequency I quickly figure out when a brand is not of quality and switch when necessary.

It also makes determining cost per wear much easier. If a shirt makes it through the year then the cost per wear is price/52.

SapporoChris··on Welcoming the Nepalese Government to Have I Been Pwned

SapporoChris··on Show HN: Physically accurate black hole you can put in your room
Easy cure, simply watch "The Black Hole",https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Hole_(1979_film) and you won't ever be able to take them seriously again.

Side effects may include overwhelming hate for Walt Disney Productions.

SapporoChris··on Scientists link oral bacteria to heart disease and cognitive decline
I think I can beat this on price. Broke a tooth recently in Tbilisi, Georgia. From the top of the tooth it looked like 1/4 broke off, but it was a diagonal break from center to exterior and was all above the gum line.

I really didn't want to get in repaired in Georgia, but with the pain it didn't take long to decide to get it repaired.

Got in repaired for 150 Georgian Lari which is about 57 USD.

Other interesting notes, first day they didn't even ask my name just gave me a temporary filling and charged me 50 GEL. On return visit I was asked my full name and birthday. Got the tooth repaired and paid the remaining 100 GEL. I never filled out any paperwork.

The tooth is quite sensitive to hot and cold but I'm not ready to get a root canal yet. I am pleased with the repair.
