Sam_Odio··on Divvyshot (YC W09) launches (with HTML5 drag-and-drop support)
Thanks for the heads up. We've had an unexpected rush of uploads this morning as the east coast woke up.

We've started additional AWS Instances and things should be working normally and just a few minutes.

UPDATE (9:52 PST): We now have 5 machines processing & resizing photos. There are still 6,500 photos left in the upload queue from earlier today. We're processing them LIFO so it may take us a few more minutes for us to get to the photos uploaded early this morning.

Since the queue is so large expect new photo uploads to take longer than they normally should.

If you have any more problems please email us directly: human -åt- divvyshot -dºt- com

You can go even shorter: http://divvyshot.com/p/LRHa/ or http://dvsht.com/p/LRHa/.

The same works for events; just substitute an e.

The java applet is a backup for older browsers. If you have firefox 3.6 just drag photos directly onto an event page.

We'll expand support as soon as we can but we're at the mercy of the browsers here.

Nope - it was designed in house by Michael Yuan.

Very talented guy. There are a couple CSS hacks in there that don't exist anywhere else on the 'net. Try to find them!

My favorite feature is probably one of the hardest to find. To upload photos in Firefox 3.6 just drag them directly onto an event page.

I <3 HTML5

Sam_Odio··on 1290 Amazon mp3s free (most music)
It's actually much more useful if you sort by popularity. There are about a dozen good Christmas songs in there: http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1261763009/ref=sr_st?rs=33489701...
Sam_Odio··on Amazon goes down; takes S3, Salesforce, Target, and others with them.
It looks like a DNS issue, since while http://amazon.com isn't working for me http://72.21.207.65 is (kind of).

EDIT: "No A records were found for amazon.com" http://www.zoneedit.com/lookup.html?host=amazon.com&type...

Sam_Odio··on Who Do You Believe, Randall Stross or Your Own Lying Eyes?
Funny, I'm writing this from my iPhone while on vacation in tahoe, nv. My first thought when gettng online was that the network qualtiy here is great, much better than sf.
Sam_Odio··on Divvyshot (YC W09) launches free iPhone App
We're not talking about scaling by syncing more than 2 devices simultaneously. We're talking about scaling our user base.

The problem is that we can only expect GPS to be accurate to 1-2km and the phone clocks are often off by 1+ seconds. This makes it difficult in metropolitan areas when multiple transfers can occur simultaneously within a 1-2km radius.

We noticed that too. We were even thinking we could end the video with something like this: http://www.realmofprosperity.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/...

Oh well, you can't get everything right.

The website is actually more powerful for long-distance transfers. For example, the recipient can download all the hi-res photos as a zip file.

If you're not in person, just use the app email him a link to the event.

We considered a button but ended up going against it. It doesn't scale - the button doesn't give us enough data. People don't time their presses well enough and if the app becomes successful we'll have a hard time telling apart presses that occur close to each other (both in time and space).

We've also considered a 4 digit pin but that confused users. It turns out that users intuitively understand the shake UX to transfer the contents from one phone to another.

Sam_Odio··on California to withhold a bigger chunk of paychecks
I don't understand how one of the largest states, which can supposedly benefit best from economies of scale, with one of the highest tax rates, can have such serious liquidity problems.

It looks like every article on techcrunch.com is down. Probably some apache rewrite issue.
Sam_Odio··on YC: Help, I quit my job, now I cannot get Apple to pay me out for iPhone Apps
Accidentally deleted original post:

"Email me and I can spot you some cash (if your story is legit)."

Don't take it the wrong way, just one HNer helping another.

We can also talk about subcontracting work if you're interested.

Sam_Odio··on Keynes, Explained Briefly
But Warren Buffet isn't really a stock investor (he is but thats not where he made his money). So if you're saying he's one of the stock investors playing musical chairs - I don't think you're correct.

If you look at Berkshire Hathaway Holdings' balance sheet (1), you'll find their largest asset class is "Equity securities." Equity securities == stock.

Most other assets on the balance sheet are consolidated from subsidiary companies in which Berkshire... holds stock.

What most people don't realize is that buying stock is investing in the business.

Sam_Odio··on Using Amazon S3 to host a static copy of your site
The advantage is price. If you're running two medium ec2 instances you're going to pay $288/month before bandwidth.

5GB of S3 storage is $0.75/month before bandwidth.

Sam_Odio··on ReMail Brings Speedy Full Text Search & Entire Offline Mailbox To The iPhone
Just another data point: I've been testing a pre-release version of reMail for the last month without any real problems or crashes. My setup: gmail (not IMAP), iPhone 3G, 3.0 OS.
Sam_Odio··on Chart of YC companies' hosting decisions
I second namecheap. I've used them for several years and have around 30 domains registered there (including Divvyshot). It's worth paying a little more for a more intuitive interface. I've never felt afraid of being tricked into buying something I didn't want.

Another suggestion: Use everydns.net for DNS. It's donation-based (http://www.everydns.com/donate.php), powerful, reliable, and run by David Ulevitch of opendns.com.

Sam_Odio··on Share HN: I wrote an app to help my paralyzed cousin type significantly faster.
Very cool. Feature requests:

- Accept keyboard input. Some users might find it easier to press a key rather than use a mouse or even a touch screen. It would enable support for stuff like this: http://www.usm.edu/ids/tlc/images/hw-ikeys.jpg

- Feature a big "copy text" button so that the user might be able to use your service and paste said text somewhere else on the web.

Sam_Odio··on The Dark Side of Entrepreneurship
We need more articles like this on HN. Pursuing a career in entrepreneurship & startups is a long, hard, and unglamorous road. If you're prepared for that at the beginning it won't make things much easier but it might give you the resolve to not give up.

I've see too many founders (myself included) quit this lifestyle because they weren't an instant success.

Beware the "trough of sorrow."

Sam_Odio··on Interview with Sam Odio, Founder of Divvyshot (YC W09)
This article is slightly inaccurate in its depiction of my previous company. It didn't explain how OdioWorks makes most of its revenue and it didn't give enough credit to the person who currently runs the company. Maybe I'll write a blog article about it someday.

Sam_Odio··on How To Save The Newspapers, Vol. XII: Outlaw Linking
This is absurd. If a website wants to block linking it's easy: just use http_referer and/or dynamic urls.

Nobody does that because it's horrible business practice and a easy way to isolate yourself from the rest of the web. Regardless, we certainly don't need the government to enforce a behavior that individuals could easily adopt on their own.

Sam_Odio··on Terrible Password Security Advice From Jakob Nielsen
I've found that novice users often associate hidden passwords with encryption. They think that because they can't see the password nobody else can.

These users are often more likely to use a less secure password in visible prompts out of fear of compromising their more secure ones.
