I've read here in previous years about bans propagating to other accounts. I think that if Google can associate you with other accounts that they're not above banning those too.
Sabinus··on US Forces Exit Iraq
The section on Syria checks out though.
Sabinus··on US Forces Exit Iraq
Am I supposed to find evidence of "the oil thing" in the link you posted?
Sabinus··on US Forces Exit Iraq
Stuff supportive of Israel gets flagged plenty, don't worry. Outraged supporters of both sides are active here.
Sabinus··on The new Firefox design is here
The "perfect is the enemy of good" guys really come out of the woodwork for every Firefox announcement.
Sabinus··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
The way I heard it, there was a bit of everything. There was some attacks because of the violence that had been happening previously, some fled because of rumours of violence, and some were encouraged by the Arab armies.
Sabinus··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
I would caution against uncritical consumption of Finkelstein's work. He is a bit unhinged, and limited in what content he can analyse as he can't read Arabic or Hebrew.

Also Tucker Carlson? Seriously?

If that's the way you want the conflict to be sorted, which is a genocide competition, then Israel will win that competition. I assume you don't want that? "You're on stolen land and you've done it this time with the genocide, Israel, now you have to dissolve yourself and migrate back to Poland, Brooklyn and Iraq" is not a realistic ultimatum to deliver to a nuclear armed state established precisely because it's citizens experienced centuries of persecution living as scattered minorities.

Israel under Netanyahu has done plenty to criticise but I would actually like to see an Israel/Palestine deal not the West following both sides into radicalisation.

Sabinus··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
>Israeli cities have far more threatening military infrastructure than tunnels. They literally have nuclear weapons.

And Hamas is permitted, as per the rules of war, to target that military infrastructure. If Israel has co-located it with civilian buildings, and attacks miss their targets, then too-bad for Israel.

>When you murder someone and squat on their land, you're not a "civilian".

This is very arguable for the West Bank settlers, but the Israeli civilians that were targeted by October 7 are not settlers and are in very solid Israeli land from a conflict 80 years prior. Arguing that all civilians in Israel proper are valid targets makes you no better than Smotrich and Ben-gvir, and you are essentially advocating for the genocide of Israelis.

Which is your right to do, I guess, but that's certainly not going to convince the (nuclear armed, remember) Israelis to moderate and compromise, or actually bring about justice for Palestinians.

> When someone murders your family and steals your land, you don't have to dress up in any particular outfit to defend yourself.

Military uniforms are for the protection of civilians. If you forgo them, then your civilians will receive more harm. Israel is responsible for their actions and many war crimes, but Hamas is responsible for theirs.

I was not aware that every city in Israel has an extensive military tunnel network. Is that the case?

If Hamas were to take one of those tunnel cities and Israel were doing guerrilla warfare from them I wouldn't blame Hamas for bulldozing.

Israel does have mandatory conscription. They also have a firm and visible distinction between when someone is serving in the military and when they are civilian. While in the military they're all fair targets, and if they're not serving, and at a music festival, they're not.

Sabinus··on Netherlands bracing for potentially devastating US sanctions against the ICC
>The ICC can literally order the arrest of the workforce of an entire bank if it participates in anything having to do with retaliation against the ICC.

I would suggest that the reason that the ICC hasn't done this yet is not deference, but because they don't want to have to force a bank to choose between having their business essentially destroyed by being sanctioned by the US, and being arrested by the court.

Sabinus··on Why is Hacker News like that?
That, and flags have more weight than upvotes.
Sabinus··on Ask HN: Is AI use not allowed in projects which is shared here to show?
Quality. Clarity. Intention. All things that suffer when AI agents haphazardly assemble a project with a naive user.
Sabinus··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
If, in reflection, I may contribute to that effort, 'the point' of something is much more about its goals than something 'being pointless' which is more about outcomes. Which is interesting since you would assume they would align in meaning more having the same base word.
Sabinus··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
I'm not claiming the Trump admin is capable in the pursuit of their goals, only that they had some.
Sabinus··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
The fix is turning the detection of the modified ram from a boot failure into a warning and log output, then tell users asking for support that they don't have support for Pis that were modified by third parties.

Instead we get restrictions on all users because some users buy stuff from random marketplaces online?

I don't know why you're suggesting the fix is that they offer support for 3rd modded RAM.

Sabinus··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
The Iran war has points, namely preventing a dedicated American enemy from getting nuclear weapons, contributing to Trump's legacy, and probably something to do with Israel. The problem is that it can't be won with current USA capabilities and everyone not in MAGA already knew this yet Trump started it anyway. The Ukrainians even offered drone defences before it started and were publically rebuffed by Trump. The ignorance and hubris of the Trump administration is truly remarkable.
Sabinus··on What happened to the Snowden archive
This article certainly did not improve my perception of Glenn Greenwald. Unprofessional, wild narratives in his reporting, and a changing story about why the Intercept fired their research division in charge of the files.
Sabinus··on US interest rates raised for first time in three years
America desperately needs ranked choice voting, everywhere it can implement it.

I would also argue mandatory voting would be useful but I don't think the Americans are ready for that.

Sabinus··on The Painful Truth: The RAM Crisis Is Only Just the Beginning
If you want an industry to act in a certain way you legislate for it, not wag fingers at consumers buying things. "If you want cheaper consumer devices we all need to individually stop using AI" is not useful or realistic.
Sabinus··on Fed Raises Rates as Warsh Bucks Trump to Contain Inflation
Plenty of diesel trucks though.
Sabinus··on How much oil-market buffer is left?
The amount of times "global commodity" was explained in this comment section was interesting.
Sabinus··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
I guess no one can fault the West for retaliating by paying people to light stuff on fire in Russia, for deterrence. And I guess no one can blame the West for sending Ukraine more missiles to fire into Russia, to end the war.
Sabinus··on Iranian banks' SSL certificates are being revoked due to OFAC sanctions
The one-party-state and leader-for-life thing is a bit more substantial than egg eating habits. It's all fun and games while they're increasingly productive and not very internationally assertive but that won't last forever.
Sabinus··on The case against JPEG XL
If you're going to make claims of bad faith about other users like that you should link and quote.
Sabinus··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
We do, just not social media for the sake of extracting maximum ad revenue out of users. We're a widespread society we need large online spaces, but not ones algorithmically designed to addict and derrange users.
Sabinus··on Due to concerns about malicious applications, GPT2 will not be released (2019)
Look up how the wireless radio helped spread European fascism. It's not about "the people can think this but can't think that", it's "how does this new communication platform change the existing political culture and how will we adapt?"
Sabinus··on Remember Hong Kong
The way you've talked about the average Asian it seems like you're describing a cultural predisposition but representing it as a racial one.

And it's easy to see why HK citizens would have cultural preferences towards independent legal systems and political freedom. Their 'being Asian' is independent of this.

Sabinus··on Remember Hong Kong
What makes you characterise Hong Kong independence movements as naive economic nostalgia and not a desire for political freedom or independent legal systems?

Do you think individuals experienced more freedom under the British monarch and Parliament or under communist rule?

Sabinus··on Ask HN: Why does account age matter?
Reputation and past statements are useful tools in analysing people's beliefs and arguments and the reasons they make them.

Fully anonymous commenting creates certain incentives and you can see those at work on 4chan. There are good points and questions to be had there by anonymous posters but it's a more difficult exercise in finding and parsing them.
