SN76477··on The iPad was meant to revolutionize accessibility
Zero-visibility interfaces are a challenge even for me.

Often they overlap with other "swipe" features giving unexpected results

There is no manual to explain them (that I know of), one must stumble across them which often leads to frustrating results.

SN76477··on Reddit is removing moderators that protest by taking their communities private
I'm not convinced infinite growth is possible.

Give me calm and stability over growth any day.

I tell my company all of the time, that paying bills and wages IS success. But it gets a lot of grimaces from investors etc. They can shove off in my opinion.

SN76477··on Private equity is buying everything from vet offices to tech conglomerates
A few years back I had to run door dash orders to pay the bills. I noticed then that distribution of labor removes a lot of the spirit and purpose behind the work.

No one at the call center is enjoying the satisfaction of a job well done, it is complete detached. I'm sure the laborers are pushed hard to high quotas and have zero time to follow up with customers.

I think we need to back to owning the entire system if we are going to have better services, better profits and satisfied employees.

SN76477··on The FBI as advanced persistent threat
oversight is the answer. Crime is real, and the FBI and other law informant agencies do good work but not all of the time. They need proper oversight with genuine consequences.

Instead they get blank checks and too much authority.

SN76477··on YouTube removed dislike counts, so this guy made Rotten Tomatoes for YouTube

SN76477··on People who use Notion to plan their whole lives
I'm one of those people ... but Notion has let me down too many times. I've had to move on.

Crypto is a great service.

But I do not see it as anything other than that.

My process goes like this.

I buy the crypto I need to send, I send it, I am left with 2 or 3 us dollars I didn't use in a wallet until I need to use it again.

Better and easier than PayPal, but there are risks such as it isn't secured or backed up and I am ok with those risks.

SN76477··on Tech bosses are letting dictators censor what Americans see
I've observed that integrity and honesty have no concern for satire or mockery.
SN76477··on BuzzFeed News is shutting down
Freakonomics I believe it was, had a podcast on how Journalism is a public service. Meaning, it should be funded by grants.

Why and how is it a public service? I wish I could remember the episode.

1. When journalists investigate their local politicians it helps keep those politicians clean.

2. Strong local papers and journalism is taken into account by loan officers who in turn save the municipalities tons of money by shaving off a percentage of a loan. This is massive returns when it takes 20million to build a local high schools, Libraries, etc.

SN76477··on Police relied on Clearview AI and put the wrong person in jail
We need to be skeptical of technology again.
SN76477··on Push notifications are now supported cross-browser
Its become a noisy world.
SN76477··on Acer is building a fancy electric bike with AI
My argument is simple.

Why do we need fancy bikes with AI when we can't even get sustainability right.

It's like we are tying to solve problems we created over and over while ignoring the most obvious problems and their solutions.

SN76477··on Ask HN: Small scripts, hacks and automations you're proud of?
Back around 2013 I needed trello for a project.. I couldn't seem to get the UI right and decided to use gmail as the front end. It worked perfectly, and was easy for everyone to understand.

SN76477··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
I ignore the majority of it myself.

Maybe I'm a pessimist but there is little I can do to make an impact on geopolitics.

I want to spend my energy on the things I can control and little energy on anything else.

I'm much happier being completely unaware of whatever may be happening with the world.

SN76477··on ‘Luddite’ Teens
I have considered a large ipad to replace my phone. Still able to get calls, gps and take pics but with much less convenience than a pocket device.

Somehow we have placed all of our faith in these devices.

SN76477··on Notion AI – waiting list signup
Im a long time Notion user... I wish they would focus on features that the users want.

How about custom colors ? :(

SN76477··on The first minute of every phone call is torture now
Technology promised a sort of communications revolution, but communications are now a fragmented mess.

50 years ago if you wanted a job, you looked at the news paper.

Today if you want a job, you need discord, indeed, craigslist, hackernews, and a countless amount of other sources.

It has become counter productive for the end user.

SN76477··on Ex Police Officer Used Law Enforcement Tech to Hack Women’s Explicit Photos
My personal favorite is "if you do not know what you are looking for why are you looking."

If they know what they are looking for, have a warrant. It is that simple to me.

SN76477··on Ask HN: Why do I have to call for cancellation?
This is the correct answer. In the book I am going through now, which is by one of those high performing sales centric CEO's who makes a fuck load of money, says new customers are the goal.

Not retention, not customer service, not the customer experience.

Then he proceeds to order them by priority.

It is backwards, I do not think this way. Yet, the modern successful business does.

SN76477··on Cellulose Shoes Made by Bacteria
This is fantastic.

I switched to minimal shoes just over a year ago. While they are great, they wear holes in the sole after just a few months.

The shoe is fine, the laces are fine. Throwing them away feels like an absurd waste. But the holes do make them unwearable.

I wouldn't feel as bad about throwing them out if I knew the materials were renewable.

We as people have learned to trust technology... I miss the times when we were more skeptical about it.

SN76477··on Models are sucking the fun out of fun
I played mmos back in the day and they were a ton of fun. Then Thottbot came along, and it make the questing too easy... no one needed to talk and work together, everyone focused on getting to the next quest.

I hope future games will use more randomization to keep players guessing and building community.
