SFjulie1··on The F-35 Is a $1.4 Trillion National Disaster
You must have missed the part where a 50k$ Czech passive radar is defeating the F35 stealth capability.

Problem of EM sensors is most often then not, are active (especially radars and IFF), they broadcast or ping signals thus leaving quite a huge EM signature that can be pinpointed precisely with 3 antennas.

Except with the right (obvious) non linear filter you can easily extract orders of magnitude smaller signals randomly inserted in a white noise

That is the basics of how people in astronomy clean their signal.

SFjulie1··on The Evil Within the Comparison Functions
Oh I thought it was about JS insanity.

Well known caveats : don't use == but ===.

What about cmp implicit operator in js?

Well, it relies on == :)

same with lt/gt

"0" === 0 false "0" < 0 false

"0" <= 0 true "0" > 0 false

WTFOMGBBQ?!!!!

The implicit type conversion mess is all over the place in JS. Changing == to === is by far not sufficient.

"<==", "==>", "truecmp" would be required to correct a tad the mess still. More correct solution would be to burn JS to the ashes at my opinion, with emacs, modern hardware, devops and startups

SFjulie1··on The Continuing Silence of Bourbaki (1997)
Feynman thought they were everything that science should reject. It seems that knowledge used to be better before internet. (new math == Bourbaki)

One of the actual members is Pierre Barthelemy http://passeurdesciences.blog.lemonde.fr/pierre-barthelemy/ they seem to originate from ENS and elite school in France.

According to Pr Gleik they "engineered" math so that not another Poincaré would appear again. A french mathematician that based his reasoning to geometry at the dislike of yet another academy that thought talent should not despise the recognition earned by the experts. And Poincaré made clear he despised the formalism fanatics and the french school of math.

So they pushed what Feynman called an hyperverbose reformed version of math that would rather focus on being objectively "scientifically correctly expressed" by being able to manipulate formalism instead of having intuition that could ridiculed the best.

They said that Mandelbrot owe them a lot, and Mandelbrot just fled these people without really caring because he thought geometry was important and these people were kind of pedantic.

The message of bourbaki in one "lemma" is never draw. A drawing is always a special case and no drawings of schema will ever lead you to build strong abstractions. Formalize everything.

It kinds of looks like modern computer science fights between the craftsmen vs the tools/language/frameworks/methodology fanatics.

And for an extended understanding of the mechanism of how Bourbaki's 'new math' and other amazing formalism makes it to the top of the educational offer in California a little light on still standard practices is necessary: it is all about the best choice possible

SFjulie1··on Linux Mint downloads (briefly) compromised
If you call secure an OS which can crash process without giving meaningful errors.

I have lost hours debugging mysterious crashes because of SELinux, and it is really not safe to have components unexpectedly crashing when they are part of your core infra.

Plus I guess that like every security frameworks it runs with priviledge, it has a lot of lines of code, is hard to audit, and thus highers the surface of vulnerability.

Hint: they use for instance strcmp a lot http://stackoverflow.com/questions/24353504/whats-wrong-with...

Their code mixes if(){} with the if() else (without braces)

They are sometimes using enums, sometimes #define sometimes magic values to refer to constant values.

You should really read the source code.

Definitively above the average of C code in the wild, still having well known code smell.

I would like to see if PVS studio could confirm my intuition.

SFjulie1··on Show HN: Herodotus – An IRC bot that logs a channel's activity to JSON
Not Julie. It is a pun in french. Julie is like calling me Hanni when my real name is more like Hanniballs. And I still have my balls. So keep it julie1.

But I guess you may lack of context to get it right, as for the rest of your comment. ;)

SFjulie1··on Show HN: Herodotus – An IRC bot that logs a channel's activity to JSON
Wtf?!

https://github.com/egladman/herodotus/blob/master/server.js#...

How can a developer be that stupid?

file.write is atomic (guaranteed to "work") for PIPE_BUF (posix) octects ~ 16ko at most.

JSON is guaranteed to be unparsable if the file is truncated of the last chars (it is not very resilient).

Hence the write may corrupt your WHOLE log if a non recuperable failure happens or the code is interrupted.

The code DOES not use fixed size allocation ... thus is can crash randomly because of SEGFAULT in the middle of the writing. The history will take cumulative size in memory.

This coding attitude highers the probability of this failure to happen BY DESIGN.

Is it that complex to FIRST write the file, and THEN atomically rename the new file to the old file at worst (resulting only in losing the current session, but not the whole history).

If your log are that precious, why would you not take extra care about protecting them?

This code makes me want to puke.

On the other hand, it is representative of the reason why I am disenchanted by modern coding standards.

SFjulie1··on Why Apple's fight with the FBI could have reverberations in China
I guess the unintended consequences rather than the physics matter.

Okay, it is a question of taste.

But my proposition works in more than one language (latin included). ;)

SFjulie1··on Why Apple's fight with the FBI could have reverberations in China
Argh I guessed the OP meant repercussion 1) unintented consequences and 2) re emission of percursion ~= reverberation

While reverberation is kind of just the echo of a vibration.

SFjulie1··on What happened to Eric Douglas?
In free software project, some users push to far the idea that software belongs to them, their creator included.

Just to be clear, if the guy is dead, well he does not care anymore.

If he is alive he has most likely opted out of the web since web access is almost not a blocking factor.

Hence, it is a choice or it is death, and in both case if a project cannot survive any of this outcome it is dead itself.

That is what I fear will happen to a lot of free software/open source projects in the future since very few core commiters tends to produce the majority of commits for long times.

SFjulie1··on No comic sans in httpd status pages
I guess the idea of putting comic sans MS as a way to force companies into putting relevant customised status error messages for users has failed.

EDIT see here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9240906

For 500 a ticketing or a contact info to report the problem For a 404 whatever can help the user finds it way For congestion status a link to a status page? For stuff 40? that requires payment a link with a link for legitimately acquiring it ... The webmasters email in case there is something to report could be nice too ...

It really is business meaningful to customize them, I fully support shaming irresponsible webmasters that keep default status pages with comic sans MS.

SFjulie1··on How High-Flying Zenefits Fell to Earth
You read correctly.

And it has consequences.

The startup culture is very toxic in terms of use of psychotrops. People takes all kind of drugs (alcohol included) often with a laxist attitude from supervisors and drugs + workload + stress = lot of catastrophs. Ho! And of course, the more crunches the more open bar there are to reward you from keeping on with the good job and release the pressure. EDIT and it happens that drinking overlaps with production duties during crunches, when people are already lacking of rest. Thus, generating of course more production incidents.

Startup are brain crunchers and are free to go on since there is no legal liability for this, and they don't pay the price for the damages since they just fire burnt out employees who have to pay for fixing themselves afterward and tell customers there are no guarantees software works, it is a lose-lose-win situation.

SFjulie1··on Why I don't like smartphones
I love my nokia I bought 1€ on the black market in poland that is charged once a week, have the radio, and a correct mp3 player that you can use as an usb key and is not locked, brickable.

In fact I bought 4 of them. I am now awaiting the moment someone will try to smug my phone and show him my wonder and expect him to say: keep your trash!

Just for anyone thinking I love nokia, just remember how cumbersome their software were to use. They are so shitty, I don't have a data plan, thus I am making savings on the accessories, the phone (i dont fear to break it) and the communication plan. ~400$/year

Compared to my old habits, I am sparing money. I can backup my music, I can load music easily and I don't care anymore.

The morale of my story is : don't complain about a market when you are driving it.

So called geeks nowadays are a joke that have high incomes, and shape the market of computer and electronics appliance by early adopting the most stupid ideas possible that cost the most.

The inability of "geeks" to influence positively with their habits of consumption a market on which they are supposed to be more knowledgeable than the mass makes me wonder about the technology they adopt in companies for producing. They really seem to not care about costs, recurrent expanses, adequation to the needs.

SFjulie1··on GitHub responds to Dear GitHub letter
I complain every day more about how we organize our works and need the insanely complex git to collaborate because we have insane ways of producing code.

An industry that requires increased insane level of complexity for simple task to "progress" amaze me at failing to get the problem is not in the tools.

I can guarantee that for 10 weeks work with "old" technologies (python + whatever static HTML server) I can make a one size fits all website for all restaurant that can be customized without security holes. Make it in a free license so that people make money with my second creation ... on purpose. And we would all win. All the economy from having something simple and well thought.

But I can't do it. I am not an influent trend maker so no one will bet a kopek on my business.

And you know, these tools cognitive load on the brain, is a load that should be spent on business problems, where cost efficiency matters.

Where operational expenses are better kept low whatever the initial investment is.

The fact we all use at least git (+ a ticket tracker) that are heavyweight, should tell us that we are dangerously inflating the cost of building software. Hence, contradicting our very primary reason to be : which is to diminish operational expenses the most we can.

And we still have not proven anything about how much money this increased expenses due to complexity finally create value anywhere... In decreased price, decreased incidents, higher quality, better jobs, better economical growth ... saved lives...business values true SLA (and not the one measured by the editors/operators)...

So, well, github may not be the problem.

SFjulie1··on An Exhibition That Proves Video Games Can Be Art
GTA, populous, civilization, space invaders, street fighter II have so much echoed every where, even in museum through plastic art, dance, movies and street art, that is is ridiculous to ask ourself if it is art. It is.

But clearly, museum, artists and institution once more prove by the example how late they lag behind the popular culture and how much they crave for legitimacy.

Every time I see an artist in a museum I feel like visiting a tomb of a now fallen comrade that tried to escape institutions and finally got revered by it. Like the biggest sign of failure possible for any arts : being revered numbly by the idiots you tried to shake.

Any artists craving for oscar, medals, title, social recognition is aiming at failing to bear any disruptive messages towards our society, hence culture. Heralding loud to aim at no disruptions about our times is called plain propaganda.

Art has misplaced the debate over proficiencies required to bear a message and its technicality while the biographies of the artists seem to point out they cared more about expressing themselves.

Art is the very art to study the envelop instead of a message and to contradict by the very same study the nature of the message. Art as an academic study should be considered very close to a religion.

EDIT: And I consider that there should be no religions taught in universities or education systems. (Yes, psychology if it persevere in failing at having reproducible results should be considered from being banned to be taught, like some economic theories, or intelligent design).

SFjulie1··on An Exhibition That Proves Video Games Can Be Art
If being exposed in a museum is a proof to be art, then I still think Marcel Duchamps Fountaine de Jouvence is better placed in toilets.

Art is a just a name to classify ways of expression, and the same way the rose does not need a name nor a museum to shine in the morning, Video games never needed museum to be Art.

But on the other hand, artists need to put stuff in museum to claim authority on something they clearly don't understand.

SFjulie1··on ‘I have nothing to hide’ is killing the privacy argument
I can't revolt as long as I have don't have the toools .... bouhouhouh.

You don't lack tools to achieve more freedom ; you just need willpower to fight for your freedom you gutless geek tarded.

What do you think is the problem at hand?

Words do not jump from books or internet in the head of the reader. The magical natural efficient media is .... something that internet obviously FAIL to provide.

Else you would have heard of one of the most famous writer of history talking about privacy. Geektarded.

SFjulie1··on Twitter, to Save Itself, Must Scale Back World-Swallowing Ambitions

SFjulie1··on Linux kernel bug delivers corrupt TCP/IP data
checksums are cost efficient for detecting statistically HW errors.

It is just no modern engineers seems to care to check the checksums.

SFjulie1··on ‘I have nothing to hide’ is killing the privacy argument
Well I don't think a society problem can be fixed with cryptography.

Diogenes messages is clear: the less you need in order to be happy, the more free you are.

The first spying system seems to be in your brain not in the nature of the world, and it is called moral judgement; useless thoughts that make you vulnerable.

You can shield yourself more around your vulnerabilities (crypto), or you can totally accept to give up on your vulnerabilities (shameless UK/US).

Maybe giving up on moral crap and living as we really are would solve the problem much more than spending useless money on this topic.

Being shameless= 0$ (poor's weapon), good crypto = ...M$ (wealthy kid's weapon)

Sometimes I pledge for a clear business analysis for highlighting stupid ideas.

People claim they need crypto just in case they need to revolt (China...) and they cannot revolt against stupid stuff because they don't have tools. For being more free.

But being more free is above all a state of mind. And believing that submitting to more (technical) constraint is a necessity to be more free seems very idiotic to me. I think it a technical solution to a shared nevrosis of some illuminated developers that never took the time to open "good old paper books". Crypto is a shield to protect a vulnerability that can be avoided by accepting to wank in the public space.

Hey, geektarded, there are libraries with SMALL DATA. Pieces of knowledge written in intelligible way. It is called books.

Of course, you have then 2500 years worth of books about "the social contract", political science on how to solve the need to accept our differences (ourselves) and how to share a public space.

But I guess, coders suffer NIH syndroma since their hubris is exploding the standard reference set by Narciss. They seem to ignore old pieces of knowledge.

Sometimes, IT is making media more efficient to distribute shitload of new non information at the detriment of our past cultures that are loaded with a lot of them.

It is time for being a Luddite.

SFjulie1··on ‘I have nothing to hide’ is killing the privacy argument
of course it is. because it is the right argument against privacy.

I love to scratch my balls and I do it at home with my wife in the room proudly.

I am a cynique. My dream as a man would be to wank like a dog on the public space and that putin or bill gates came to me asking me if I needed something (probably to stop disgracing the place).

In my dreams I answer "Move your ass from my sun, I already have the best I wish, and the sun whatever the fuck powerful you think you are is not in your power to command".

The guy probably would have asked me if I was not fearing him and I would have answered: are you waking up every morning and looking up in the mirror thinking you are a bad guy? No. Should I fear the good guys?

Knowing the answer, I would have had resumed wanking again.

But the actual modern internet is all about self censorship by bigotry. If they were less bigotry internet would be a tad better.

Nowadays, living like a dog as a choice is not possible anymore. So when I basically tell the story of Diogenes who made fun of Alexander the Great, I see a problem with our civilization pretending that our society is better and more free than the Athenian democracy because we have no more slaves.

I would say the opposite: we are now all slaves. Especially from not only bigotry and the fear of the disapprobation of the moeurs, but also the fact there is an asymmetry between the citizens that must strip without consent of their privacy, while the more powerful shield themselves in invisibility cloaks.

And if someone read greek old myths as I do, we all remember the Gyges ring parabol about how substracting yourself from the public view is a perfect tool for planning and hiding crimes.

So my problem with the privacy always boils down to: who watches the watchmen (Allan Moore 1996)

EDIT conclusion what cynism tells about privacy Fear not who you are, because the pressure of feeling observed is our universal moral compass. There is no morality possible without accepting fully your own nature and build you life centered around not the picture a society have of you, but around your true nature. The true slavery is the one of imposed morality. Hence the true face of slavery is a society that requires privacy to function properly. Care not about the eyes of the others, care about your own weakness at not accepting your differences.

SFjulie1··on Introducing the ~=~ operator
You can create an operator that can be made of other operators

cardinal of A intersection B == cardinal of (A) (or cardinal of B : since A~=~B implies card( A )= card( B) ) This is your test re-expressed by using math.

But basically the formula I gave is the shortest non factorable form of this operator in a normal set theory.

And there you have a problem, every truth are biased by a corpus of prejudice called theory and the physical nature : because of the nature of computer you cannot represent any given number. There always be a number that can saturate your computer resources. It is called MAXINT.

Old MAXINT where the size of a register. With Big Int there are the size of your allocatable computer memory (phys + virt)..... on a distributed grid it will be the resulting union of resources. And universe being resource bound there always be a limit to the representation of the integer you can make. So computers will still fall short of resources to represent ALL numbers.

So the absolute operator you call for does not and cannot exists as long as computer are resource bound. So there is a map problem here that cannot draw completly the territory. The playground of physic is bounded, math abstraction/measures are not.

And your way of interpretating data can be wrong : what tells you the input number are not modulo something? Like in a % 2 universe : 2 == 0 [2].

Good software are high context software. There is no such thing as immutable truth and monads is still an elucubration of a monk that ended being burnt by the church for blasphemy. Not to say he was wrong on saying the earth is moving (in fact the solar system)... but to say ignoring context can literally burn you.

PS Noise is defined by the observator. It is measuring the log of the ratio of non of relevant choices over relevant choices (entropy) and entropy varies according to what the observer calls relevance of the data.

What is relevant to someone (random numbers in cryptography) maybe irrelevant to other ones.

SFjulie1··on The master, the expert, the programmer – Zed Shaw
Mastery could be developed if tools and techniques were not imposed by the will of business for a cheap army of monkey coders. I agree with the thesis, I reject the conclusion.

I used to do savate. No master. It is just about winning a dirty fight in the street in 1vsN and french boxing (the sportive side) being able to practice without breaking your weapon (body) while improving. Fast to learn and use.

The high points of this martial art are : fewers moves, good direct and peripheral vision in case another opponents appears, and efficiency to be able to take on the next opponent fast.

For me programming nowadays is like a bad martial art.

Before you even can fight your problems you are given the wrong assumptions and weapons about fighting.

1) real life street fight is not 1v1 fight. The same can be said about people learning to write and not maintain code.

2) real life practicing and hard work are necessary much more than theorical crap. CS studies are like learning dogmatic theories from people who never where on the streets.

3) Apprenticeship is way to low. You cannot self teach you the good move. You need real fighters to learn. Cops where doing savate as much as thugs, they are very good teachers. Knowledge backed by practices that works worth more than academic knowledge. (the french federation sux though)

4) MMA/UFC bullshit: the arena given to coder for their work is organized by companies wishing an army of cheap interchangeable monkey competitive coders pouring blood. The "preset" of the ring for coding of companies is ridiculous. A good fighter would strive at not putting himself in useless danger and taking the risk of breaking himself. Winning one fight and taking the risk of breaking yourself on the long run is stupid. And sometimes not fighting is the good way to not loose (numerical inferiority)

5) Incorrect priorities. Street fight is not in kimono and bare foot with nice "ready to fight" signals. It requires a shot of adrenaline and learning to become violent in one instant. Companies wants submissions and standardisation to lower the costs of hiring. Good programmers are versatile and like creativity they are unpredictable & strong willed by nature of the job.

6) the weapon' choice. Savate defense learn you to turn common objects like every day jackets, keys, U lock into weapons to face versatile situation. Modern computing requires framework that are as convenient and common as agrar tools from the middle age, or using a trebuchet.

7) respect diversity. Men are powerful, women are flexible. Savate embraces the difference and gives path for anyone to develop efficiency through their own strength. There is no other "one best way" than the one that proves to fit your quality and make you win through constant practice and learning in respect of YOUR style. There are as many boxes as there are boxers. Conventions sux.

8) it is not always about kicking. Coding has become the central activity of coders. Feints, moving, observations, tricks are important too. Nowadays coders are blinded from observing the business context in which they must code, putting them in a position of blindness where they must program defensively without having specifications that match the real problem. Try to fight deaf and blind. They are just punching in the dark believing they can fight.

9) constant adaptation. Once hired coders are not encourage to continue their practice and keep a good hygiene. They are in constant fights without places for evolving. Also they are not trained to deal with the versatility of situations and encourage to cooperate. Thanks to the HR. They loose their skills fast.

I do agree that mastership should appear one day. I disagree given the unfair competition between small businesses and big businesses imposing wrong views on what coding is that there is a solution in corporate business.

I used to believe in free software until corporate interests pushed wrong stuff like systemd into the system.

The conditions are purposefully maintained because companies and academics don't want masters to spread disruptive knowledge that could make them lose their dominant position.

If coding is martial art, than you have to look at the conflict here to understand.

It is an economical conflicts between the bosses that have the money and the coders that have the creativity. And the purpose of companies is to avoid that coders can master their art. Doxa vs praxein.

And when you see sillicon valley no poaching agreement, you can see the fight is rigged.

However botnets, cyber criminality is proving that the even a script kiddies can be dangerously efficient once they are freed from organizational rigged conditions.

And that is why criminality beats our actual corporations.

It is because I did not liked to be beaten by thugs I learned to fight. But nowadays, I also fear the cops.

The first thing in a combat is to analyse the situation and identify correctly people really ill intentioned towards you and not care about their look or talk.

SFjulie1··on Ask HN: Any advice for a disillusioned young developer?
The fact big companies in SV have been caught in a no poaching pact gives an indication of how workers are considered by the owners: just lemons to be pressed. They even strip you from your moral and patrimonial rights on any of your inventions in exchange for some ridiculous equities that give them fiscal advantages. And they call it "advantage". For whom? You do the valuable original part of the job.

In exchange, like a kid you have free lolipops and you have a nice kindergarten kind of ambiance, where immaturity and attitude prevails. You are distracted from thinking.

I faced your situation. I find modern IT mildly innovative nowadays and promises made at hiring often never held, IT culture often toxic. Especially the lack of critical thinking.

Take some vacations. Whatever you plan next. You may have good reasons to be disillusioned. (or none, the thinking is up to you)

Sometime just enjoying life is the right solution to a lot of problems. Because, fuck the IT. Your life and the search for your own happiness matters more than anything else.

By being honest, you are proving to be mature: trust yourself.

SFjulie1··on Death of a Troll
pero non vero pero bene trovare

EDIT : Ho! The comments seems to say the guy really existed.

Btw; should I tell the author that Eris means the goddess of discordia (misunderstanding that becomes conflict) and not of chaos. Which make the choice of the pseudonym even more interesting ... for a troll. I would have chosen Hermes (god of the pranks, liers, merchants, ambassadors, thieves, crossroads, boxing, and messengers).

And that is brother Ares is the god of war // dreadful conflicts (he is re-used as the leader of the knights of the apocalypse in the bible).

So bad St John never took the time to be versed enough in greek mythology to know that the goddess of intelligence always win vs Ares/Ires.

I sometimes think the christians/jews/muslims lacks something compared to the greek civilisation when it comes to dealing with our fears.

SFjulie1··on Tcl/tk vs. the web
Dont try to save me, he got me. He as a point. In fact thank you for saying exactly what I meant I feel relieved : you also have a point.

How is it possible you are both right? I made a shortcut that was incorrect.

That is the reason why I often include myself in the idiots I am denouncing. Because I make mistakes too.

SFjulie1··on Tcl/tk vs. the web
Ok, I was a tad lacking of precision.

Tk not tcl because it is event driven relies heavily on a mutable called time/clock.

And there also always states every time you do asynchronuous to handle the status of things (connection, ....). And since you can manipulate them, you have to deal with states. And you cannot "snapshot them". Basically modern web is just using browsers like an asynchronous GUI it was my thesis. And indeed, in other contexts tcl can map to functional paradigm.

I really don't care in fact of FP. At one point it is like monads, string theory & a lot of very interesting theories that are very enjoyable to learn but for which the cognitive burden to respect the purity of the theory outweigh for my pooor brain in real life application.

It reminds me of my teachers being pissed when I could solve their problem faster with an easier personal ways when I could use my tools. And even more pissed when I was framed to use their tools and failing. They thought I was doing it on purpose like other kids ... to shame them publicly. No I must be kuku.

What protects the international conventions on Intellectual Property anyway? The originality of the way of solving a problem.

So I always thought that making myself my own tools and thinking was a necessary risk in order to be truly innovative one day.

That is also why I dropped the consulting bullshit to test my theories in the grunt job.

I also do a lot of other stuff like testing my greatfathers ratio of KNOP in fertilizer, music, knitting, cycling 50km/h in the city, cider, bread, emulsions (béarnaise, béchamel, vinaigrette...) to challenge my knowledge.

Stuff that must work. And I pride myself in some successes. (at the price of a lot of failures).

SFjulie1··on Tcl/tk vs. the web
Indeed. :P

But it is not my ego that is big, it is my life. Being bankrupted, scamed into weired business practices, fired for using CSS in a web app because CSS stands for Cross Site Scripting while I just shown that letting the user store non stripped HTML in a web page for a "highly sensitive" application was weired forges the ego.

Btw, I am self taught mostly. I come from a physic university. But, I did have important lessons (heap, stacks, linked lists, FIFO, LIFO, ana num, matrices and LU...), and more importantly I have been mentored and have learn by apprenticeship mostly and not in the real "academic" process.

Not every thing can be taught by yourself. And the school might not be best place to learn computer programming. But we sure do need the others to improve. My ego leaves a lot of room for the others because I need the others too.

Simple no?
