S4M··on Why I left Japan after 10 years
Well I live in Spain (Barcelona) and look Asian. It often happens to me that people start a conversation with me in English.
S4M··on Common Errors in Undergraduate Mathematics (2009)
I remember in first year of University (Math/Physics) someone saying that arctan(x+y) = (arctan(x) + arctan(y))/(1-arctan(x)arctan(y)).

(Basically he thought that the expansion of arctan(x+y) was just like the expansion of tan(x+y))

S4M··on Show HN: Lax – Write Python to output LaTeX
A simpler example:

    $ lax -c 'x ** 2'
    \sqrt[2]{x}
While the output should be:

    x^2.
If you wanted to use sqrt, it would have to be:

    \sqrt[\frac{1}{2}]{x}

Not interested for geographical reasons, but I like that your research engineers are not called by the generic "Data Scientists".

S4M··on Accidentally destroyed production database on first day of a job
Actually, the CTO should have mailed the dev team saying:

    Hi,

    Yesterday, I thought I was on my local machine and clear the database, while I was in fact on the production server.
    Luckily knodi123 caught it and killed the delete process. This is a reminder that *anybody* can make mistakes,
    so I want to set up some process to make sure this can't happen, but meanwhile I would like to thank knodil123.

   Best,

   CTO
S4M··on Ask HN: What do want to see in programming language?
In Python, I'd love to add something like const in a function definition, for the arguments, to say that the arguments will not be modified by the function. For example, I would want the following code to somehow return an error

    def get_last_element(const my_list):
        return mylist.pop()

There is one picture [0] where the board isn't set properly (the square at the the bottom right corner is black instead of white), so I suppose they some of them are not too strong.

34% is way too much for a fascist like Le Pen.

How about the things we would have left in extreme environments: Internet cables at the bottom of the sea, rubbish (or dead people with clothes) high in the mountains, or remnants of polar expeditions in the South pole?
S4M··on United removes first-class passenger to make room for 'higher-priority' traveler
Well, not forced out of the country, but Muslims visa holders were denied entry in the US on their way back from holidays:

How about the Muslims?

S4M··on Build Your Own Text Editor
I just tried halp, it seems pretty cool, thank you for making it available!
S4M··on A step-by-step guide to building a simple chess AI
> How are these point systems made?

I'm currently in the process of building my own chess AI (in python), and I'm using as a score a weighted combination of the material and of the number of squares controlled by each side. I am planing to experiment with weighting more the squares that are closed to the opponent's king, and possibly to improve the evaluation function using reinforcement learning.

That said, my program is currently pretty weak, first I have to optimize its calculation speed to it can calculate deeper.

Am I the only one who is surprised by that? (I don't live in the US)

S4M··on Show HN: Master Numbers in a Foreign Language
One trick that helped me to master the numbers in a foreign languages was to mentally make additions in that language. For example, in Japanese, I would ask myself "How much is Ni plus Go?"

At first I would mentally do "well, Ni is 2, Go is 5, 2+5=7, 7 is Nana, so that's the answer" and at some point I was able to do it directly without translating the numbers to my native language.

S4M··on Falling Home Prices Could Be a Good Thing
I think it was a sailboat. He told me it was relatively cheap (10-20k euros) but maintaining it was costly.
S4M··on Falling Home Prices Could Be a Good Thing
I had a colleague at a previous job who was living in a boat. He once told me tnat the costs to rent a place in the harbour, to maintain the boat and the utilities were about 400 euros/month, which is about the rent he'd pay for a small studio in Barcelona. The rents arec cheaper there but maybe in New York or San Francisco one can save lots of money like that.
S4M··on Intern Impact: Brotli compression for Play Store app downloads
You are perfectly right, and no, I haven't deployed anythong at the scale of Google. On the other hand, deployments at that scale are routinely done at Google, Facebook and Amazon amongst other tech giants, so an intern doing it shouldn't warrant an article.
S4M··on Intern Impact: Brotli compression for Play Store app downloads
> 1.5 petabytes of savings in data usage per day is not HN worthy?

Well it is, but the merit should come first to the engineers who implemented the Brotli algorithm. What Anamaria did was just to include the code for that algorithm in the Play Store. Sure, it's some good work, especially for an intern, but I think it's a big exaggeration to say that it is that work that saved 1.5 petabytes/day.

S4M··on San Francisco Asks: Where Have All the Children Gone?
> but all of our family is on the east coast or in Germany

So I take either you or your wife is German. If your child doesn't spend enough time with the German parent, he or she will not know the German language, so please be careful with that.

Disclaimer: I don't speak the language of my father (Vietnamese), for the reason I mentioned, and as a French expat I try to make my two kids speak French when I can, but they don't have the same level as "normal" French kids, especially my older son who is 6.

S4M··on What I Wish I'd Known About Equity Before Joining a Unicorn
Oh you are the guy/one of the guys who made repl.it! I saw it on HN couple of years ago, it's an awesome product, congrats! I hope you succeed with it.
S4M··on How Deutsche Bank Made a $462M Loss Disappear
I suppose that with a loan it would be transparent that the money "gained" would have to be repaid later, while in the case of a sure to lose bet, the price of the derivatives could have been tweaked so it would be apparent only later that the money would be lost.
S4M··on The jobs that really smart people avoid
I have another hypothesis the article didn't mention: students who want to do research focus more on their studies while the ones planning to go to Wall Street do the bare minimum to get an acceptable grade (whatever "acceptable" is for the Wall Street institutions) and spend the rest of their time networking, preparing for job interviews in banks, or just enjoying life.

EDIT: spelling
