Ruthalas··on OpenStreetMap Is Turning 20
If you appreciate OSM, consider installing the StreetComplete mobile app[0]! It lets you contribute to OSM in a very simple manner, via simple questions like, "Is there a marked crosswalk here?"

I'm not affiliated, I just think it's cool. It's very satisfying to complete quests in your local area.

You are correct, and with the current metal AM techniques (DED, SLM), you can also take thermal imaging of the melt pool throughout. From this you can a pretty accurate picture of the weld quality across the whole volume.

I'm not sure that's sufficient to eschew any other non destructive testing, but it is great information.

Ruthalas··on Why are debut novels failing to launch?
Goodreads is a subsidiary of Amazon.

Edit: I realize I misread your comment. Disregard!

You are not wrong, though that penalty may be pretty intangible on a spreadsheet, at least in the near term.
Ruthalas··on IrfanView
If you didn't happen to see it, this is from knighthack's comment above:

"To top it off, IrfanView works beautifully on my Linux via Wine, and also on my Mac M1/M2 machines (and as a tool quicker than even Mac's own Preview). It's a primary install for me, whichever any platform I'm working on; and a software that's truly a gift to the world."

Ruthalas··on Should error messages apologize? (2013)
I still disagree with your characterization.

First, it's not that the UI is colorful, it's that many designers seem unwilling to make UIs that are monotone or subdued. That's different from disliking color for whatever reason.

The designer choosing that certain (more monotone) color schemes are not permitted could be conflated with designers making other decisions on behalf of the user, such as assuming the user would prefer fewer options for the sake of simplicity. ("Treating the user as inept")

I don't know what the OP meant exactly, but I still find your 'translation' uncharitable.

I personally like both brightly colored things, as well as more muted color schemes, depending on the situation. I don't personally think colors equate to childishness.

I can however empathize with someone unhappy that their personal aesthetic preference seems underrepresented, and feels that UI designers are making more choices on their behalf than they'd prefer.

Ruthalas··on Should error messages apologize? (2013)
For what it's worth, my 'translation' would be, "The strong aversion to less colorful designs seems childish, and may go hand in hand with designs that treat the user as inept. I don't like being treated as inept or incapable."

Seems both more likely and more charitable.

Ruthalas··on Be gentle with the Apple Vision Pro [video]
According the the video this thread is about, the glass has a coating of plastic over it, likely to help with impact resistance.

This means the outer surface can be scuffed/scratched in ways that cannot be wiped off. This scuffing is described in the video you linked during his first tests. This could be an issue if you get a scuff in front of a camera.

Seems like the laminate combo of plastic and glass is very resistant to breaking though, which is great. Maybe that tradeoff is worth it.

I haven't been able to get unifiednlp working on newer LOS builds. (It worked beautifully on an older device with an older version of LOS.)

Do you have a current guide for installing it?

Ruthalas··on Bluesky signups are now open to the public
This sounds interesting to me, but visiting communick.com I can't figure out how much the service costs, nor see any way to find out. I see a sign up page, but it also has no pricing info.

Can you direct me to that in info?

Ruthalas··on Fairphone 5: Keeping it 10/10?
Only very recently did they start partnering with a company called Murena to sell phones in the US. Murena currently stocks the Faiphone 4.

Murena does have a note on their site[0] regarding sale of the FP5. They don't have it yet, but they may eventually.

Ruthalas··on Bandcamp support is faltering – maybe you should download your music now
Many of us use bandcamp specifically to avoid subscriptions and because it provides downloads, rather than streaming.

Your idea isn't bad, but I don't think it will appeal to the folks who are lamenting this situation.

So look into Valetudo if you want local control of your vacuums.

It's a open source application that (after rooting the vacuum) replaces the cloud with a self hosted control webUI.

I am a big fan.

What does "ETA" mean in this context? I've only seen it used for "estimated time of arrival", which doesn't make sense here.
Ruthalas··on Google has been rolling out Chrome's “Enhanced Ad Privacy” via a popup
Though I'd prefer no advertisements, I think it's worth distinguishing between targeted ads and those that are simply based on the page content.

If you run a technical blog and run advertisements that fit that theme, I am less adverse to that. I see the tradeoffs there, and can choose to visit your page and see your content knowing the exchange that's being made.

I was responding specifically to your concern that the advertiser would no longer be able to tailor their advertisement to me if deprived of information about me.

(My preference is to directly fund people who make things I enjoy, and I do practice that. I also think most mobile games funded by ads rely on predatory models to be profitable, which isn't really ideal. The whole thing is a mess of misaligned incentives.)

Ruthalas··on Google has been rolling out Chrome's “Enhanced Ad Privacy” via a popup
"They do if they want to deliver ads that are relevant."

I don't have any interest in them doing so, so this seems to work out.

I'm not interested in being manipulated, nor providing information about myself to make that manipulation more effective.
