RustyConsul··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
Internet, Grid, Rockets, astroid belt.

You know there's a giant ball of platinum floating around just outside mars thats worth 1.7 Quintillian?

Today does not represent tomorrow.

RustyConsul··on Tell HN: Turned 44 today and I'm lost

RustyConsul··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
'Oligarchs' historically have gained influence and fielty to a nationstate. We are at a new form of Oligarchy, where the business magnates are able to operate internationally on a scale never seen before.

Historically, taxation has been the most profitable form of revenue generation. But thats no longer the case. With globalism and multi-national product creation, a single person in a nation can be many times richer than any nationstate, with technology above and beyond any nationstate. What happens when musk has electric jets and fully-reusable ICBM's, has remade the world power grid in his image, is one of few entitys even able to get to mars let alone command and control the resources of the astroid belt.

> "if my offer is rejected i will reconsider my ownership in twitter."

Thats an immense amount of selling pressure on the stock... This is a threat. He's negotiating with a gun to their head.

RustyConsul··on A 2030 Self-Driving Car Bet
What about infrastructure changes? We are using cars in a really shitty way currently. We have the technology to allow cars to go extremely fast, why are we limiting them?

For instance, if you could make a highly aerodynamic truck with huge, beefy tires and put it in a tunnel with very little atmospheric drag you could potentially go up to around 300 miles an hour. If you layer the infrastructure with sensors, the car itself doesn't need to be self-driving it simply needs to communicate with the sensors and stay in it's 'track'. No human would be able to drive within such tolorances, but a program can do that quite easily. All this can be done with current technology.

AKA the cryber truck and the boring company.

RustyConsul··on Chernobyl power plant captured by Russian forces
For all the downvoters, he does bring up a valid point. It is a 'click-bait' title that is comparatively neutered to what is actually occurring.

"Russia bombs Ukraine' "hundreds dead in russian invasion ofUkraine" "Russia implements no fly zone over Ukraine" "Russia incircles Ukraines Capital"

And we get - A long deserted powerplant captured?

RustyConsul··on Chernobyl power plant captured by Russian forces
the US military has been preparing for this eventuality since 2014. We have bases all over soviet block countries. We have bases in poland and recently sold them 30 M1 abrams.

Wanna know when the escalation starts? When russia runs into proxy US bases in the eeastern blocks.

RustyConsul··on Be anonymous
holy cow! I literally laughed out loud when i read the rainforest remark. Chill out dude, you're reading something called 'Thoughts' by some random dude on the internet lol
RustyConsul··on Use of Google Analytics declared illegal by French data protection authority
Kind of. I'm still losing my ability to choose.

I've often found the slippery slope 'Fallacy' to not be so much of a fallacy in reality when it comes to power.

RustyConsul··on Starlink lost 40 satellites to a geomagnetic storm
well, at the end of the day they deorbitted because they ran out of fuel.

I know Elon is screaming at his engineers right now to increase the amount of krypton in each and if this happens again, they're fired.

- i used to work at tesla.

RustyConsul··on The EARN IT act is back, and it’s more dangerous than ever
yeah, but you are creating a populace that is dependent on their government for motivation, morals and concept of time spent. Not a good long term strat, and is historically what you see in the death throws of an empire.
RustyConsul··on The EARN IT act is back, and it’s more dangerous than ever
I agree but why do you need to government to tell you to do that? Move, tell him to put it out, or don't go to that bar that allows smoking...
RustyConsul··on Major breakthrough on nuclear fusion energy
Shows how much progress begets progress.

There was alot of debate about spending so much money on the large hydron collider when there was other social programs the money could be spent on instead of probing the fundamental nature of the universe.

LHC actually paved the way for commercial production of novel superconductors and magnets, leading in some way to helping fusion become a reality. In my opinion, Fusion and solving death should be my generations guiding star. (i'm 26)

RustyConsul··on The EARN IT act is back, and it’s more dangerous than ever
A democratic government is a government built and run for the 51%. Technically, pure anarchy is the only form of government that is for the people by the people because... theres only the people. Not some entity set above and beyond the reaches of 'The people', with authority over the people. Not that i believe in anarchy as the epitome of governance, but Bakunin has left me slightly jaded ever since i read him in high school.

I would agree with you that a free society is one that protects peoples rights. But... somewhere along the lines of social media and virtue signaling, protecting peoples right slowly transformed from the 'No-Harm principle' to 'Comply with X_Dogma or be canceled!'. This tendency has stiffled debate, taken away rights and shown the deep flaws in the democracy of a mob. Atleast in the US and the UK, these power structures that we have put in place are not for the people but are for the politicians within that government. If you are a democratic aspiring politician showing you can enforce paternalistic arguments among your populace is the key path to power.

in Democracy, as soon as you put someone in 'Power', the path instantly diverges between 'By the people' and 'I think therefore i am'. With the creation of an institution, it becomes an entity in it's own right. It believes that since the people bestowed this power upon them, it is their moral responsibility to protect the people.

Case in point - Smoking cigs are bad for your health and 80% of the people agree... So lets ban cigarettes!

While we are on this topic, everyone agrees that endlessly scrolling instagram is also bad, so let's put a time limit on social media - Everyone gets an hour a day!

Since this pandemic thing can happen again at any time, we might as just wear our masks forever. It's a minor inconvenience, but think of how many lives you can save!

Also, this whole Covid thing really showed that there are deadly things out there that we don't understand, and since vaccine effectiveness does not seem to resonate with people we are going to break into your house and force jab ya! Oh, Vaccine effectiveness waning... Well we designed this cocktail of immunities! Mandatory for any employees in a company over 1!

Also, since we are on the discussion of democracy... Do you think we can slide in alittle bill that says all mexicans gotta go back to Mexico? Think we can get 51% of the population to agree with the "We have put a man on the moon, we can build a fence!"

... Default::default("more racist, paternalistic, irrational arguments that democracy can concoct")

RustyConsul··on In second largest DeFi hack, Blockchain Bridge loses $320M Ether
Read the Polkdadot Wiki at https://wiki.polkadot.network/. It explains most of the concepts involved in blockchain.

Also some other books: Mastering Bitcoin Mastering Eth The Sovereign individual

Then i would read the first 10 chapters of the rust book, then dive into substrate.

RustyConsul··on Facebook loses users for the first time
lol - thanks for this. Only on HN can you start with a joke and end with this.
RustyConsul··on Tell HN: We have a responsibility to speak out against blockchain technologies
I don't know wheere the ponzi scheme is in Smart contracts, decentralized identities, arbitrary data communication across and decentralized network, ZK-rollups, SK-Snarks, Automatic liquidation, leverage, and minting using other assets as an algorithmic backing, liquid staking, no loss lottery's, loaned crowdloans, algorithmic stablecoins, arbitrage based enabled trading platforms, decentralized incentived storage networks and a million other things.

Seems like we are going into another crypto winter :)

Every-time this happens, i slowly invest in all the projects i think are promising, then the next bitcoin halving us crypto nerds have 5-10 things to add to the list of 'Interesting things crypto can do', no one understands them so they are easily dismissed and people say "Well i still can't buy an apple with my btc' so thus all crypto has failed.

RustyConsul··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2022 – Show and tell
Your writing style is entertaining and inspiring.

i'd love to read more of your work so i say do it! if not, rhoades.lorenzo@gmail.com and i promise not to share them ;)

RustyConsul··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
You can also like... use the technology to get the coins. Mine from your laptop for some BTC. Use some of those 2TB hard drives in your drawer to host files. Sign up for airdrops, provide liquidity in defi... I haven't spent alot on buying any coins and i enjoy the space. I've always treated it like this neat little world that me and my friends can compete in. See who can out nerd the other nerds, have late night rust marathons to do stupid shit with substrate.

You seem to forget that it's about interacting in the crypto economy, not selling all your coins to make more fiat. I wonder how long this fad will last of people hating on crypto because they don't understand it.. Probably forever?

RustyConsul··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
Comments like these make me wish hackernews had a follow button.

You leave the article with a certain conception and sometimes it's utterly shattered in the comments; This is one of those times.

RustyConsul··on Apple CEO Tim Cook 'secretly' signed $275B deal with China in 2016
According to the markets, accountability seems to be a liability. When they started axing IPO's, capital fled China and the dollar strengthened.
RustyConsul··on Square Releases White Paper Detailing Protocol for a Decentralized BTC Exchange
DID is the only way you can anonymously comply with regulation. Jack isn't dumb, he still has Twitter to protect even if he's using square to build his new empire.
RustyConsul··on Axie Infinity: Infinite Opportunity or Infinite Peril?
This topic is obviously going to rankle some feathers, since it involves NFT's on hacker news. However, this was an incredibly well researched article and i enjoyed it.

I've tried many of the crypto games recently and i'm not a fan. However, the space holds promise.

One of the things i found shocking was not about gaming or NFT's, but the fact that Eth 'Made/Generated' $1.4B in fees last month... Thats wild. According to that metric, eth is one of the most profitable companies(?) on the planet.

RustyConsul··on Axie Infinity: Infinite Opportunity or Infinite Peril?
or, if you've read the article and seen that the crypto gaming space is worth a lot of money, 2k for a bunch of data and insights is a steal to some.
RustyConsul··on Spiders are much smarter than you think
It's very rare for a sequel to be better than the first, but thats definitely the case with children of ruin

I didn't know how the concept of universal consciousness could be expanded on much more after the first book, but wow was i wrong.

Really enjoyed this convo, if you want a bit more of a long form of my thought process on this, read the Sovereign individual (With a grain of salt, it gets a bit wild)

My main point is don't completely dismiss a nescient technological field based on it's lack of utility now. Sustained development effort with real venture capital only dates back to around 2017, 2018.

All major silicon valley firms have launched funds to develop early research teams, nobel prize winning mathematicians developing protocols and some of these people are currently the richest individuals on the planet, just no one really know how much they actually have and obvious issues with liquidity withstanding.

> SHIB for instance

As many (If not more) of the crypto industry is marketing teams riding the 'Wave'. However, some of the projects have 100's of employees building infrastructure for the new internet. Check out Parity if you want an example of a true crypto company.

When i pay for something online, I am giving away my credit card/ debit card/ ACH information away for them to subtract the total amount of my transaction (Or debit it).

I am trusting that outside entity in a number of different ways; To only take the required amount, b.) encrypt my information to prevent my information from leaking.

Credit card data is leaked regularly in mass uploads for pennys on the dollar. Credit card fraud is mediated by the credit companies themselves and is just an insurance issue to them.

Crypto, I sign the transaction to send it to you. You don't get anything but my public id, amount and block time.

lol - the cyberpunk future we never saw coming.
RustyConsul··on Report on Stablecoins [pdf]
Yeah! Isn't it fantastic? You solve the double spend problem you have in traditional finance!

Due to this emergent phenomena of smart contracts you can have very low slippage between exchanges, high liquidity and high yields.

A.K.A Every stock market financiers dream.

RustyConsul··on Report on Stablecoins [pdf]
Do you think we will forever be organized and segregated by governments?

Do you ever think a human being can be a sovereign individual in his own right, without owing fealty, taxes and morality to a government in some future?

The current financial system is not all software. When i pay in crypto, i give you my money. When i pay in the current financial system I am giving you every bit of information to rob me blind and hoping you don't take it all. My currency(Value i produce) is not my own and at any moment in time some outside entity can cause rapid inflation, devaluing of my currency or take everything i own straight out of my bank account. My contracts are not upheld by code, but by courts of law. I have to do a credit check to outside entity's to ensure you've got the collateral to extend you a loan. I have to physically go into a bank, have a minimum balance, an address, a phone number in order to even have a bank account. That doesn't sound like all code to me.

Also, you're right. POW as a consensus method is flawed. But again, all V3 cryptos have essentially transitioned to delegated proof of stake at this point.

Lastly, in a generation of cancel culture gone wild and as an avid reader of history, I'm glad crypto is available to me as the nation-state that we've all known and loved is looking more and more stressed.

If you still claim there's absolutely no value in any of it, then me and you have very different definitions of the term.

Edit: There are 104 protocols/coins that have over $1B market cap. Value isn't a personal judgement, it's a group one.
