RootReducer··on Stop overstimulating your mind with digital entertainment
This is ridiculously preachy. I do think the overall thesis is correct, in that boredom can be a powerful force for creativity and inspiration, but paragraphs like this make the article completely off-putting:

"If you want to let music inspire you and enjoy its real beauty, I have few very simple rules: Classical Music and no “skipping”. Then I will trust my appetite."

I do like sitting down and actually focusing on an album, but suggesting only that only classical music is worthy of appreciation is absurd. There is an amazing variety of wonderful modern music in a multitude of genres.

I love this. When I use Google assistant to start a timer, it always says "Sure, 5 minutes. And we're starting now."

This takes about 5 seconds, and the timer doesn't start until it's done. It's a minor annoyance, but I'd prefer a simple chime.

RootReducer··on How Well Can You Hear Audio Quality? (2015)
I got 5/6 with a Schiit Magni/Modi stack and Beyerdynamic DT 770s.

On the flip side of the coin, my wife regularly listens to music just out of her phone speaker and claims to not notice the difference.

Everyone enjoys music in a different way, and I'm glad there are plenty of options!

RootReducer··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
It took me a solid 6 months from "never worked out a day in my life" to "can do a pullup".

I started just hanging from the bar, then moved to using a stool to get above the bar and lowering myself as slowly as possible.

Eventually, with practice, I could start holding myself in place with arms bent, then finally start moving upward.

It was a journey, but I'm glad I did it!

How did you find a good PT? How does it work with insurance? I want to also establish a regular PT routine but I'm unsure how to start.

RootReducer··on Game Accessibility Guidelines
To be far to GMTK, he has an entire video about whether Dark Souls should have an "easy" mode that discusses this exact point in great detail, and overall he makes the same concession you do for art and experience.

RootReducer··on The Endless Acid Banger: algorithmic self-composing acid techno music
This is amazingly well done. Although simple, it's actually enjoyable to listen to.
RootReducer··on Yahoo Answers to shut down May 4, 2021
They've only been doing one or even no Yahoo questions per episode for a while now. I almost suspect this will relieve them and give then an "out" to pivot to different formats.
RootReducer··on Noise pollution hurts the heart
This is my issue too. Earplugs don't help for idling trucks, or subwoofers. Nothing I've found does.
RootReducer··on Noise pollution hurts the heart
A neighbor used to come home from work late at night and lock their doors three or four times, and every time it would wake me up. I wish there was a silent door lock and it would just flash the headlights.
RootReducer··on Noise pollution hurts the heart
I would be ecstatic if my city banned leaf blowers.
RootReducer··on AirPods Max: An Audiophile Review
I have been using my DT-770s every single day for hours and hours for about 5 years now and they are still in perfect condition. I expect them to last an extremely long time.

Meanwhile, I'm on my third replacement airpods (thankfully all covered by warranty, but not much longer!)

RootReducer··on How to Use Anki to Improve Your Memory
How do you remember the new words you look up when reading books? Making an Anki card for each will make sure those words are permanently etched into your memory.
RootReducer··on How to Use Anki to Improve Your Memory
Both! I make a card with English on the front and Korean on the back, and I include a sample sentence in a custom field with the target word highlighted. I always read the sentence out loud after I answer the card.

I also make Cloze cards specifically for grammar where I'll cloze out the conjugated verb and put an English hint, like: 7시니까 댄 씨는 벌써 {{c1::퇴근했을 거예요::I think he left work}}.

RootReducer··on How to Use Anki to Improve Your Memory
I've done my daily reviews now for over 1000 days without missing one. It's really just up to you to make time for it if it's something you want to do.
RootReducer··on How to Use Anki to Improve Your Memory
I've been using Anki for about 3 years to learn Korean and it's been tremendously successful. In that time I've learned around 3000 new words (both English -> Korean and Korean -> English with reversed cards) and a ton of grammar (using Cloze cards). I couldn't imagine trying to memorize this amount of information any other way now.
RootReducer··on Home Studio Setup Costs Compared – 1980s And Now
I can't recommend Audible Genius's Building Blocks course enough. It teaches many fundamental music composition techniques and ear training using a piano roll layout (like the one found in Ableton and other DAWs). It's very inexpensive and you will absolutely develop a great foundation for writing your own music while going through the course. You'll learn drum programming, rhythm, harmony, melody, and more, and it will directly translate into Ableton. There's a 7-day free trial as well.

RootReducer··on Why Adventure Games Suck (1989)
Adventure games are still not dead! Amanita Designs is making some of the finest games around - in particular, their masterpiece Machinarium. Anyone who even has a passing interest in adventure/point and click games owes themselves the pleasure of playing it. Sublime music and art, a lovely wordless story, interesting setting and characters, and well-designed puzzles.
RootReducer··on Ask HN: What are some interesting projects to reuse your old devices?
I set up an old iPad as a picture frame that shuffles through all my photos. It's been wonderful reliving memories and vacations! I did have to buy a third party app to do the shuffle since Apple removed it a few OS versions ago though.
RootReducer··on Sonant: A tool for creating generative music based on random walks
Yes, please! This would be a really neat tool. There are already some Ableton devices that are similar. Makes me want to investigate how to build a device.
RootReducer··on Visualizing Music with GANs
This is a totally different way of visualizing a track - no GAN here, all done by hand, but also very cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvEGgMbTW1s
RootReducer··on We are clueless about how long things should take
If Typescript is adding 20% to your workload, I suggest spending a little more time getting used to it. When I first started writing TS, I agree it felt a bit cumbersome and it took some time to understand the nuances, but the time it's saved me in refactoring and catching errors I would have made without it has more than made up for it. I know this isn't really your main point, but I don't want anyone on the fence about TS to be scared off by that 20% figure.
RootReducer··on Apple Music Web Client
Very cool! I've loved Apple Music ever since I was able to upload my library using Match, and I feel like its recommendations are getting better and better. Nice to have this in a pinned tab.
RootReducer··on What does it mean when a product is “Amazon’s Choice”?
This is purely anecdotal, but I've noticed recently a trend of reviews that start with "I was sent this product for free in exchange for an honest review..." and they almost always include photos. True, these are easy enough to skim over, but people planting fake reviews could also be getting smarter and making their reviews seem real by including pictures.
RootReducer··on Micro-promotions and mentorship: impact of small actions in engineering culture
Agreed. It's well-studied that heaping praise on mediocre accomplishments diminishes the effectiveness of future compliments.
RootReducer··on Wage Stagnation
The author addresses this in the conclusion, and is also suspicious, but presents some possibilities that explain it.

"This surprises me, because the dramatic shift in 1973 made me expect to see a single cause (and multifactorial trends should be rare in general, maybe, I think). It looks like there are two reasons why 1973 seems more important than it is...."

RootReducer··on Airbnb and security camera disclosure
My wife and I have done a lot of traveling over the last 5 years and usually stayed at an AirBnB. We used to have nothing but good experiences but the quality has become so inconsistent that we switched back to hotels. AirBnb is now no longer cheaper than a mid-budget hotel, and if anything goes wrong at a hotel, you can dial the front desk and get the problem resolved immediately. Plus check-in is easy and comfortable and you can often get other perks like breakfast or a gym.

The last straw was a bug infested cottage in Key West. The owner wasn't responsive for hours, and finally "dealt" with the issue by giving us a vacuum and telling us that's what he uses to get rid of them.

RootReducer··on Blue Apron Shares Hit New Low, as Anyone Can Do “Meal Kits,” Even Walmart
Not quite. The meals I prepare from Blue Apron are significantly healthier than most takeout options - we control the sodium entirely and the majority of the ingredients are fresh vegetables and proteins. Plus the variety week to week is staggering - I've been getting weekly Blue Apron for more than a year and never had a repeated recipe. I've learned about all sorts of new foods I had never even heard of before. I am absolutely too lazy to meal plan and go grocery shopping, but ordering takeout isn't even a comparison point for me.
