RoadieRoller··on The death of web development education
I used to listen/watch some youtube channels for learning. Especially as a newbie, I used to listen to the channel - Programming with Mosh (5M+ subscribers). I see that he has stopped producing videos regularly. Last one year, he produced only 3 videos. There could be other reasons. But I suspect lack of interest from viewers because of AI.
RoadieRoller··on Microsoft abandons personal AI chatbot race with Copilot reboot
My employer installed the new Outlook in the background, and it was forcing me to switch to the new every time I use the old version.

I had to edit Windows Registry to avoid getting prompted every time I open old outlook. I didn’t like the looks or the bugs in the new version.

RoadieRoller··on Splash-free urinals (2025)
My hunch. The plastic fingers pointing up will reduce splash when our urine hits them first time, but if the bottom of the urinal is flat, the plastic will stick to it causing the urine flow to be slow, and due to capillary action, the urine rises above the fingers and causes splash again a few seconds into our urine passing.

If the fingers are pointed downward, the urine seeping through the downward fingers can flow freely to the outlet, and causes less splash with the urine rising through capillary action. The holes on the plastic layer will anyway avoid the urine splashing when we point our pipe against it.

RoadieRoller··on I trained a small transformer in 1.5hrs and it beats many LLMs
My above comment wasn't aimed at you. Thanks for the response though! What you did is phenomenal, and I wasn't taking a dig at you in any way.

What I intended in my comment was that, may be starting from scratch (like you did many months before, and what PaulG suggested recently) is the way to go for future job prospects and startups. Most of the comments in the thread I posted was negative for PaulG saying that.

RoadieRoller··on I trained a small transformer in 1.5hrs and it beats many LLMs
I know that this is Transformer, and not LLM per se. But isn't this the same idea that PaulG said the other day, and many of the comments criticized him?

In my country, 30-40 years back, people who needed a watch were those ones who travel regularly. And travel was mostly using public transport, trains and planes. Most or all of it operated using a 24h time. That button was very useful. Compare that to the mute/silence/DND physical button in iPhones today.

Also people who worked in confined spaces who wouldn’t know if it was day or night outside after a days job. My father who worked in an oil rig in Abu Dhabi used one. He gifted me one.

This was 1998.

RoadieRoller··on Ask HN: Does anyone else feel like nothing matters anymore?
I am not the one who posted before. But try this to maximize LinkedIn.

Consciously, "Like" job posts. That is, in the feed section of linkedin, "like" any type of jobs that you see others post. Linkedin will show you more job posts in your feed, which others post. You "like" that too. Then it will show more job postings. Keep liking that too from your feed. But don't like or view or read any other posts while you do this. Not even your friends/partner's posts.

Do this at least 3-4 times a day, with 5-10 likes in each batch.

In a week's time, Linkedin will flood your feed with job posts from actual users. Now you become selective and like only design/web developer posts that your skills align with. Then it will bring more of it and you might be able to find something.

There are two things that happens. Recruiters/hiring managers see that you liked their post, so they check your profile. Keep it updated. Your profile visits will also go up. Linkedin sees that your profile is viewed by more recruiters, and your profile will be shown above other profiles when recruiters search using their tool.

I hope you get a job soon, and you can thank me later!

RoadieRoller··on Ask HN: Does anyone else feel like nothing matters anymore?
Anyone with internet connection, a phone/laptop, and a few dollars to spare can create anything. Earlier it was not like this.

All of a sudden, your competition is anyone from anywhere in the world. Yes, to really make a million dollars, you need more than making the software. Even if you end up making a million dollars, you have 1000s of copy-cats from all parts of the world stealing your pie in no time. An average Joe will have tough time knowing which one is good and which ones to avoid.

RoadieRoller··on Stop Turning every purchase into a tip request
This what I do. I learnt this from one of the HackerNews comments months ago.

Tip the person if they do a direct service to you, which may involve touching your body. Barbers, massage therapists (all kinds, you know!), Facials, nails etc.

Also (as per another comment in this thread), no tip if we pay before we use the service (or food).

If it isn't any of the above, say "Thank you, I enjoyed your great service. But at this time, I don't have money to spare. How do I get past this screen?"

RoadieRoller··on I made tinnitus my friend, then it disappeared [video]
I had a strong feeling that I was developing tinnitus after my my usage of Apple's airpods[1] for meetings, video calls (personal and Official) and such, especially after years of Work From Home. I used to get puss from my ears, and sometimes that tweet/humming sound after a long day's use.

Later I switched to Bone Conduction headphones. I felt like BC Headphones has improved my condition a lot. No ear pain or puss or the humming noise. I hope it stays that way!

RoadieRoller··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (July 2026)
Very rarely they would, I believe. There are thousand of applicants for each job posted. Why would a hiring manager go through a hackernews post unless the skills required are very niche.
RoadieRoller··on Most arguments are about ego, not ideas
"We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.” -- Mahatma Gandhi

Also, attributed to him - "Be the change you wish to see in the world"

RoadieRoller··on I found 10k GitHub repositories distributing Trojan malware
> Why do they delete a commit and push a new one every few hours?

May be to make it appear on the top of the "Last Updated" repositories in case someone searches for the repo or a keyword. So instead of the author's actual repo, the users endup cloning the trojan infected one.

RoadieRoller··on Ask HN: How do you not take criticism of your work personally?
I've a Manager who loves one thing - Ask questions. No answer ever comes from him, but he keeps on asking questions. And as you can imagine, I am always at the end of it giving him answers. If I ask clarification questions back, he counters that with a "Five Why" type questioning and most of the time I get frustrated, owns it up to give answers and cut the conversation.

After a few months working under him, I started wearing out and started taking it personally. I started attacking him back. Not only did that cause friction between us, he gave me a bad performance review rating. I didn't give up and kept resisting one way questioning. I reminded company pays him for providing solutions and answers when his team is in need, and not sit there asking questions.

A friend of mine understood the pains I go through, and suggested I read the book, "How to master the subtle art of not giving a f*ck". I can say I am now at peace and don't care a sh#t about most things. I am still employed, but stopped worrying and taking things personally.
