Ringz··on S1: A $6 R1 competitor?
> Humans create new, spontaneous thoughts.

The compatibility of determinism and freedom of will is still controversially debated. There is a good chance that Humans don’t „create“.

> There’s no deliberation behind AI, just statistical probabilities. There’s no new or spontaneous thoughts, at most pseudorandomness introduced by the author of the model interface.

You can say exactly the same about deterministic humans since it is often argued that the randomness of thermodynamic or quantum mechanical processes is irrelevant to the question of whether free will is possible. This is justified by the fact that our concept of freedom means a decision that is self-determined by reasons and not a sequence of events determined by chance.

Sorry for the useless comment but I really like the idea of a „anti-cheap system“.

I will use it in my next presentation for shareholders. /s

Ringz··on Is Social Media More Like Cigarettes or Junk Food?
I think there are arguments for both sides, and it is far from being discussed since evidence suggests that excessive social media use can lead to behaviors resembling addiction. There are issues like depression, anxiety, and poor sleep [1][2][4]. It triggers brain responses similar to addictive substances, reinforcing compulsive use[5][8]. Some studies argue that it may not meet the clinical criteria for addiction[3][7].

There is need for further investigation

Ringz··on I deleted all of my email filters
Since I started using imapfilter [1] on my server and „aggressive unsubscribe“, email is good again. I added a shortcut to my aerc configuration [2] which adds the sender of a selected mail to a file which imapfilter reads to move it in a folder. It’s so convenient now it can handle hundreds of mails over several mail accounts fully automated.

The calculation in the metric system would not necessarily be more complicated, but it would be different because the reference points in the metric system are not directly aligned with the geography of the Earth.

"1 knot is about 100 ft/min which is very convenient for descent at a specific glide slope (i.e. for 100 knots ground speed at 5% slope you want 500 ft/min descent rate). Standard is 3° which is about 5%."

You are right. It's an easy calculation. But I would say its easy because its historically based on imperial units. Its easy to think about easy calculations like this in metric units like:

A 5% slope means descending 1 meter vertically for every 20 meters horizontally.

Ringz··on Show HN: A blocklist to remove spam and bad websites from search results
Installed! This should not be a function of the search engine nor a plugin. This should be integrated in the browser.

Another great function (not for this plugin) should be the option to "bundle" all search results from the same domain. Stuff them under one collapsible entry. I hate going through lists and pages of apple/google/synology/sonos/crab urls when I already know that I have to search somewhere else.

Ringz··on Sonos CEO steps down after app update debacle
I, like an idiot, sold my Onkyo Integra amplifier, radio tuner, tape deck, Canton and KEF speakers for next to nothing and switched to Sonos. I deeply regret it. In my kitchen, there’s an old Grundig radio and a Sonos speaker. Guess which one gets turned on in the morning and evening during meals?
Ringz··on De-smarting the Marshall Uxbridge
The hifiberry documentation is a mess. Let’s say you want to get rid of your Sonos system and start at zero with a Pi (it’s not my first one)… which features could be replaced by hb? What hardware should I buy? Which licenses?

Ringz··on One way to fight loneliness: Germans call it a Stammtisch
> Maybe that's why German tourists are notorious for using towels to try to reserve chairs in tourist resorts the world over?

Perhaps the Germans started it, but they are by no means the only nation doing this anymore. They may not even be leading in this discipline anymore. Over 20 years ago, I already observed English people reserving the best poolside loungers with towels before sunrise.

Ringz··on Developer wrote 25k lines of Neovim plugin code using phone and touchscreen
I wrote a few programs on my HP48GX (which still works perfectly). Programs about Maxwell formulas and Einstein's effects where a little bit more complicated. Not once did I think, "But this is exhausting!". However, I stayed under 1000 lines.

But now, if something gets a little bit more complicated or repetitive in my cozy Neovim environment I think more about how to avoid this with ChatGPT, Cursor, Windsurf… maybe a restrictive environment is sometimes better to actually build something?

Thank you for acknowledging that it’s not possible to prove that Chinese cars are better. After all, you’ve already retracted your initial claim.

> Cool, China subsidizing EU's fight against climate change. Get the free money, save the climate and spend the money you saved on something that you want instead of forced.

Your mental gymnastics needs some training if you think that importing cheap cars instead of selling and exporting your own cars and therefore protecting your own industry and jobs is a better deal or mechanic for EUs fight against climate change.

Maybe you are unaware of „The WTO Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures disciplines the use of subsidies, and it regulates the actions countries can take to counter the effects of subsidies.“?

Ringz··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
Better? That needs a proof and I bet you won’t be able to find a peer reviewed example.

Cheaper? You raise an easy target here if you ignore the massive subsidies, completely different financial systems and politics. China ignores international trade rules and Europe, USA etc. can’t ignore this if they want to save their industry and - at the end - democracy.

Not only are screenshots often missing, but I’m also surprised by how many projects fail to describe the purpose and goals of their project in short, simple sentences. Many mistakenly assume that only users and developers visit the website or repository, not decision-makers. More ELI5 ("Explain Like I'm 5") can never hurt.
