Yeah, hell seems like the kind of place that'd be into celebrating easter. (oh, I'm deff going to hell for this one)
RealityVoid··on Was silent reading unusual during Augustine's time?
Not sure. Since LLM's have their spot, I, personally, have been reading much more. And I was no slouch when it came to consuming written materials.

Sure, some of it is slop, some of it is pretty good. But I did read more.

RealityVoid··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
The current approach to resource distribution worked so far. When it stops working because we have too much abundance, we'll settle on another one.

That doesn't mean the transition will be smooth. It doesn't mean that certain classes won't be worse off. I can certainly imagine programmers being among the losers. And there certainly are futures where we slide in dystopia. So let's try building the good futures. Alea iacta est.

RealityVoid··on US criticises Australia's proposed algorithm opt-out laws as 'censorship'
It is a super popular viewpoint in certain populations. It might not be _your_ view point, but there are may people who want exactly this. They usually won't say it out loud because they want all the support they can get.

Should I remind that Palestine is against the two state solution? What would happen with the Israelis if Palestine will be free from the river to the sea?

Both sides are damnable in this conflict, but I don't buy this idea of the gazans "just wanting peace".

RealityVoid··on US criticises Australia's proposed algorithm opt-out laws as 'censorship'
The right is just as "censory" as the left with things they don't like.

But I think both "the right" and "the left" are kind of reductive and caricatures. I guess forcing you to go in a camp is one of the great woes of American politics.

RealityVoid··on Winning the visa lottery
Hillarious, to be honest. It still leaves me wondering... what _does_ work?
RealityVoid··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
Do books grieve? I ascribe the same kind of interaction to llm's. They work on a different substrate than us and their perception of reality, if there is any, will be wholly different than our perception because of the constraints of the substrate itself.

Not to mention the lack of continuity of existence kind of precludes any deeper and more meaningful interactions with the self.

I am not saying that they are unable to feel, but at the current structure and ephemeral existance they are unable to do so, they lack the minimum prerequisites.

RealityVoid··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
Is it? I am on the fence on this, but it does seem like there are some qualitative improvements between the models.

Not related to your post, but a fact I keep mulling over. The fact I don't trust the current crop of LLM's enough and I consider LLM's as a tech will hit a ceiling pretty hard, it doesn't mean parallel improvement curves won't spring up out of other research that will lead to much higher capabilities than currently.

Vertical integration, amirite?

I think since electricity costs are the most important facet of the margins, and the cheapest electricity source is solar, this means the largest inference providers will run massive photovoltaic parks.

Huh, it seems xray puts blank trampolines all over your binary? That sounds pretty nifty but I would expect it to be pretty language agnostic, ish? Adding support should be doable for Rust as well, right? Anyways, pretty nifty.

I am by no means an expert, but I've recently improved performance for some code and used tracy. They have rust bindings as well. It's pretty cool and it seems to be low overhead. Wonder if I can couple it with something like xray? Tracy is more the tracing library + tracing interpretations/aquisition tool.

Edit: apparently rust already supports xray natively on the nightly.

RealityVoid··on Reverse engineering my e-scooter and rewriting the firmware in Rust
I took a look into the batteries for the ebike systems, they have some sort of AES based pairing and the chips are read protected. You probably can dump the firmware from the update packages for the things. (maybe some hw exploitation stuff as well?) I did a thing where I put their battery controller on an after market battery with a divisor and it started and paired, but for some reason blew up afterwards.

I now realize it would be easier to write the whole thing wholesale, but.. uhh, it's no small feat, and I have a job soooo...

Bosch should open their shit, it might save them, because it seems the chinese with Avinox will eat their dinner in a couple of years. They seem to be pretty litigious, they went after a forum that documented initiatives to reverse (well, they also hosted pirated diagnostics sw but.. yeah)

RealityVoid··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
They really can't stop tying themselves into knots to dunk on self driving cars. They don't even know it's the case, they just suspect it's the case. Even if it _were_ the case, the drivers behind them most likely don't have this information available, they probably can't distinguish between "SDV being cautions and giving right of way" and "SDV stopping an immediate impact", they can just see a car in front of them suddnely stopping. So they should stop.

RealityVoid··on Building my own network stack
Hah, the first engineering job I had was on Ovation DCS doing power plant controls. That system traces the lineage to the WDPF systems.

Was the server you mention here the actual DCS? With the Motorola CPU's? Running vxworks? Pretty cool recognizing something niche that is still, vaguely familiar. :)

I think the point of OP is that while laptops are fine for business trips, tethered usage is superior. My setup is a laptop. Both at home and as work I have a solid desk with an ergonomic chair. On the desk are thunderbolt docks, the docks have hooked the keyboard I like, 2 monitors on mobile stands. And that's it. I have most the advantage of a desktop while using the same machine. One cable to unplug. Super nifty.
RealityVoid··on OpenAI Jalapeño: Better than Nvidia Blackwell
Talaas, from what I understand is building stuff just like that. The infra is the same and the weights layer is all you need to change. I guess you could half etch the chips and then finish them with the weights only. I think their turnaround is 6-8 Weeks. The size of the models fitting on the chips at the moment is llama 3 I think?
RealityVoid··on Nitter project received cease and desist
I would like for things to be so, but these platforms relief on you being on their platform, hooked on their algorithms, delivering them data. They need this in order to make money. HN is not monetized like this, so of course they're more lax. But I don't expect this to be possible for many other social media sites.
RealityVoid··on OpenAI Jalapeño: Better than Nvidia Blackwell
Because everyone keeps saying this so it must be true. Real "it is known" kind of vibe with these statements.
RealityVoid··on Malware infects Android-based automotive head unit firmware
Can't vouch for all car architectures, but in most cases the head unit is QM and safety domains are usually segmented from each other. So even if the head unit talks CAN (it needs to get car data somehow) it will only communicate with the rest of the car through a gateway that will not allow it to take any dangerous actions.
RealityVoid··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
I was born in a country while under the communist regime. My grandfather was killed by the communists. I, myself, did not live very much under the communist regime, but I vividly remember the 90's, which, while not politically oppressive in the way the communist regime was, were in some ways, much worse economically. What I did see is how people remember the communist regime and how they seem to have perceived it from within. Yes, they were afraid, but they did continue their lives and in some ways, quite happy lives.

I think I failed to convey some critical parts with my post. The _feeling_ I describe is the actual outlook that most people had during that time. I am not saying that the US is at that point yet, what I am trying to say is people don't usually wake up one morning and just say "Ah, ok, now I'm living under an oppressive regime" things just change and many times they will defend said regime. Just sample asking a bunch of Chinese people what they think about their current regime. I bet many of them will be quite happy with the arrangement and how things are going although they are clearly living under authoritarianism.

Yes, in many ways the US has many institutions that still work, but they have been eroding at an astonishing speed under the cheers of 1/3 of the population. If I use the same logic of projecting into the future the rate of change that... AI proponents use for example... How free do you think the US will be in 5, 10 years? You're not there yet, but factoring all the things going on, your country has done a capital mistake.

I personally am a bit frightened of what will happen in November since you have a president that has been consistently eroding the rule of law, put sycophants in positions of leadership, showed disdain for the rule of law, and elections and institutions, allies, general competency.

You might confuse my emotion with one of disdain or hatred for the US or, competitive aggression or impotent denial and projecting for dissatisfaction in my own country. ? But that's not it. My emotional state relative to the US is one of someone grieving after a personal hero I used to look up to who got brain damage and now goes down the street with a loaded gun yelling incoherent ramblings.

> I have exactly zero expectations of real consequences to Trump. He has far too much popular support for that to be realistic.

That's the problem. He has wide support despite gestures around. The thing a large part of the population supports _this_. It's not going away. This is the reason that people are bearish on US future.

> Trump Derangement Syndrome is real

If only I could convey how ridiculous this sounds looking from outside in.

RealityVoid··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Let me channel a person in the communist regime.

"Pshhhtt, the regime isn't oppresive. Sure, there is the securitate, but it's much better now, see, they released the political prisoners. Yes, some people got killed, but they were stirring waves, going around saying shit. You got to mind your business and go to work and not mind all the political stuff and you're fine. Ez-pz. Not sure what the fuss is about we are a great country, look how much stuff we make!"

When reading text like, this, I quickly start glazing over and my thoughts become cloudy. Really unsettling feeling, like I _actually_ become dumber after reading it.

And for certain text that seems to make sense, I am unsure if the text is just junk, or I am unbearably daft. Either way,, nasty feeling.

RealityVoid··on There's no such thing as a small software team anymore
And if it comes, it comes. I have no doubt a model can be as good or better than humans. I don't think humans are the peak of possibly. I just don't think the current crop of models will get there. And I do not think fast takeoff will happen. In the meantime, I keel hearing psychotic chants of "don't even read the code anymore, bro!" While the code these things output is severely lacking. At this point, it _is_ cool-aid.

RealityVoid··on There's no such thing as a small software team anymore
I think Op did not claime that "programming is going back to what it was" because even the point we should be going back to is not agreed where it should be. It's a profession always in flux.

On the other hand, "you're a prompt engineer or you're fired" just reeks of psychosis. Things will change, they will never be the same, perhaps the profession will contract. But there sure as hell will still be people thinking deeply about their code and crafting it.
