RationPhantoms··on Amazon Ring cameras used in nationwide ‘swatting’ spree, US Justice Dept. says
While true, the culture of guns in Switzerland is very different to the US.
RationPhantoms··on The silent struggles of workers with ADHD
I appreciate you writing this and will absolutely show him what can be achieved.
RationPhantoms··on The silent struggles of workers with ADHD
This article feels like it was written for my brother. He's been fired, sequentially, 4 times in roles of progressively narrower scope/salary.

From project manager (80k+) at a large NYC-BASED structured-cabling company to a billing coordinator position (<40k) at his most recent position. With the starting of each new job, him telling me this time it's going to be different and not end in his firing.

It makes me want to put my head into a pillow and scream because he's an intelligent, sociable and kind person but his mind just sits so juxtaposed from what these companies want. However, I can see his mind move beneath his eyes when we converse, and then subsequently lose focus, so it's pretty apparent if you were to meet him. I can see how that translates to poor job performance.

Unfortunately, due to a heavy-handed prescription dosage of adderall when he was young, he's pretty hesitant about trying a new regimen. I've tried pulling him into it by telling him my newly prescribed Semaglutide (Wegovy) medicine will also be a lifelong medication/issue too so we'll be in the trenches together.

RationPhantoms··on New York City hiring top rat killer
I find it refreshing. The job entails the suppression of the NYC population of rats, wouldn't you want it to be dressed up a bit?
RationPhantoms··on Gas Leak in the Baltic Sea
Isn't that also why billionaires close to Russia have been "dying"? Their assets would be property of the state ergo Putin's coffers.
RationPhantoms··on Someone is pretending to be me
What the heck is going on in this thread?
RationPhantoms··on The Nevada national security site pt 1
Fantastic post. Really looking forward to part 3.
RationPhantoms··on Ask HN: What was life like before and after a baby
I'll start with the congratulations. So congrats first off.

Second off, parenting is hard. Very hard. Might be the hardest thing I've done personally. My first kid came into my life in the middle of me changing jobs, moving and then, within the first 6 months, purchasing a home. I turned the "adult" knob of my life up to 11. Don't be like me. Press pause on other big swings in your life. Yes, programming will take a back seat. The world will continue to turn.

You will absolutely curse your former self with how loose you were with your free time. You'll probably have a bit of resentment towards your spouse and the kid itself for changing that. That's okay but don't let it manifest. Every day from their birth will get better or you will adjust. Your free time won't be taken for granted anymore.

Thirdly, every kid is different. Find their formula and help them thrive. Some kids, like mine, come out hard charging & stubborn but never pausing. Others will have a different wavelength. Don't try to overcomplicate their time either. Sometimes just hanging with mom and dad, or dad and dad, or mom and mom is enough for them. Other times, a spatula can be an absolute wonder.

Lastly, you cannot do it alone. Lean on your parents, your spouse's parents, your daycare (if you can afford it), the local playground. Use all the tools at your disposal to get by and out. That means in the moment too. Take a mental breath, step outside and catch some fresh air. That doesn't mean leave your kid alone for 20 minutes. That just means making sure you take care of yourself so you can take care of them.

Good luck, have fun and don't be too hard on yourself.

RationPhantoms··on Reddit bans users posting NSFW cyber-porn made with AI image generator
Why is everyone with criticisms about DALLE-E, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion so focused on their day 1 capabilities? The fact that it can do any of what it does today, is absolutely insane. Is no one focusing on what day 36 or year 2 will look like?

I've been privy to some of the model iterations Midjourney has gone through on their Discord and in a series of a few weeks, they've made substantial gains on generating faces from their V1, V2 and V3 models.

Within a short amount of time, this will no longer be a complaint.

In relation to OP's post, I guess Reddit can't guarantee this won't also turn into DeepFake territory so they're banning it outright.

RationPhantoms··on Making the collective knowledge of chemistry open and machine actionable
It would be wonderful to see something like the Materials Project (https://materialsproject.org/) but for Chemical research/knowledge.
RationPhantoms··on New type of 3D printing uses sound waves to build up objects
Maybe you don't see the graphic but in relation to your last question, they're literally using a syringe to do it.

RationPhantoms··on Why a Russian convoy remains stalled north of Kyiv
Sure and in the interim, they can lose $13,000,000 missile systems, $20 million jets and divisions of tanks.
RationPhantoms··on SpaceX launches 47 Starlink satellites and lands rocket making 11th flight
It's wonderful to see 0 comments on this post. The future walked in via the side entrance and sat down as if they've always been here.
RationPhantoms··on Google Search Is Dying
It's a pretty clear indication that the once stalwart effort, within Google, to produce a true search experience is effectively dead.
RationPhantoms··on Simutrans – Transport Simulator
Surprised no one has said Transport Fever (and it's sequel). Solid game play.
RationPhantoms··on Separating urine from sewage could mitigate some environmental problems
I guess Pißwasser was already taken from Grand Theft Auto.
RationPhantoms··on Device wraps around hot surfaces, turns wasted heat to electricity
I wish they had Peltier-powered devices for traditional wood fireplaces. I really love the concept.
RationPhantoms··on 70% of startups offer remote work options as hiring heats up, YC data shows
I still wonder why I peruse HN for this reason (as a non-SWE). It's incredible how the business world panders to software engineers.
RationPhantoms··on Chemical emitted by babies could make men more docile, women more aggressive
To be fair, there have been people (or specifically a single person) who have been known to detect Parkinson's so pregnancy, while social suicide, isn't that far from the table: https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/03/23/8202745...
RationPhantoms··on Everyday robots are slowly leaving the lab
I really want to shout out Maytag for pushing woman's rights forward. Without all that haphazard laundry out of the way, they never would've garnered equal pay or saw themselves as equal in the workplace.

Please.

To think there are only positives in this change is a naive approach of the future. Sure, there will be some benefits but we are in for a world of hurt if we maintain our current social structures (at least in the US) and decimate the working population.

RationPhantoms··on A quantum walk down Wall Street
The Medallion Fund has already reached their max investment amount so while it's ground-breaking, no new RenTech employees can take advantage of it.
RationPhantoms··on As teens left Facebook, it planned to target 6-year-olds, documents show
No they won't. Just like the employees at Dow Chemical Company who helped manufacturer Agent Orange or White Phosphorous, they won't get questioned.
RationPhantoms··on Fundamentals of Incident Management
Not only that but they appear to be okay with the fact that a single ISP has knocked them offline. If I was a customer of theirs and found out, I would probably change providers.
RationPhantoms··on GitHub Copilot
Okay, and I'd argue that a good portion of programmatic wrangling is simply trying to do Y with Z. Something that's probably done 10,000 times over by others but in the silo'd confines of that single developer's workspace; an utter fucking mystery to them.

What's the carbon displacement for wasted time on those tasks? It might be brow raising.

RationPhantoms··on Ask HN: What tech job would let me get away with the least real work possible?
Some University positions can be notoriously cushy. I know a few networking folks who have been in their position at the University for a solid 25 years. Kind of unheard of in the enterprise-sector for the same position.
RationPhantoms··on Equinix is acquiring Packet
No it's bare metal but can you not run your own virtualization software on the devices themselves?
RationPhantoms··on Large European routing leak sends traffic through China Telecom
That's exactly right. Think of it like modifying your GPS to get you to drive to a bad part of town (so that your car/valuables are stolen).

The fact that it's China Telecom speaks volumes to this being a suspected route hijack. It's possible it was just an error on the Swiss colo companies part but somehow I doubt that.
