Randgalt··on Organ donation becomes opt-out in France
You are free to file a form so as not to have your body stolen at death. Sounds great.
Randgalt··on Organ donation becomes opt-out in France
This is appalling. Are not our bodies our own? The remains of our bodies should belong to whomever we will it to.
Randgalt··on Why Java Sucks – Jonathan Gardner
True - it shares some features, but different VM etc.
Randgalt··on Why Java Sucks – Jonathan Gardner
Which Java? Which JVM? Which libraries, etc.? JDK 8 bears little resemblance to JDK 2. The latest JVM bears little resemblance to the first ones. Java is old. It is a huge ecosystem with lots of warts and cruft. There is a lot of good stuff, however, in that ecosystem and it's so good that it runs a huge portion of the Internet. So, some good criticisms but too much missing the forest for the trees.
Randgalt··on My Priorities for the Next Four Years
This comment from Keith Glass is the perfect response to Schneier: https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2016/12/my_priorities...
Randgalt··on Apache Ivy – any future or is it also going to be retired?
FWIW - Maven's shade plugin makes self-executing jars very easy.
Randgalt··on Apache Ivy – any future or is it also going to be retired?
Doesn't sbt still use Ivy under the covers? I know Gradle used to but maybe not anymore. In any event, Ant is still an active project and Ivy is it's dep system.
Randgalt··on Apple Abandons Development of Wireless Routers
Damn - I'm speechless. What the heck is going on in Cupertino? The Airport Extreme is THE best wireless router you can buy. Also, it has the integrated Time Capsule which is incredible
Randgalt··on Hyperloop may become reality in Dubai
The tone and sarcasm of this video aside, the guy makes strong arguments that the Hyperloop cannot work technically. Worth watching as he makes good arguments. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNFesa01llk

edit: actually it can work technically, but it's not practical at all

Randgalt··on Getting Started with Webpack 2
Wow - this comes at a perfect time for me as I'm just learning about Webpack. Thank you!
Randgalt··on A take on some of the criticisms being levelled at the new MacBook Pro models
Running multiple vagrant VMs, an IDE, Scala sbt, etc. - all at once.
Randgalt··on A take on some of the criticisms being levelled at the new MacBook Pro models
Sure - but I (and most devs I know) don't care. Let us have the option, Apple.
Randgalt··on A take on some of the criticisms being levelled at the new MacBook Pro models
The 16GB limit is the real issue for me personally. There are plenty of Windows/Unix laptops that can do 32GB or more so all the excuses I've been hearing are ludicrous.
Randgalt··on MacBook Pro
I was totally prepared to buy one of these new MBPs and now I likely won't. Spec wise these are not much better than last year's model. Frankly I don't care too much about the ribbon-bar thing. What I really needed, as a developer, was 32GB. Damn.
Randgalt··on MacBook Pro
Only 16GB!!!! No!!!!!! That stinks.
Randgalt··on Herman Miller Launches New Aeron Chair
How can you improve on perfection? I'm dubious. I've had mine for over 15 years and will never part with it. I had it refurbished 3 years ago and it's still great. It made a huge difference in my life. I had back problems and severe repetitive stress problems. The chair makes a huge difference for me. In particular, it allows me to have a tilting-forward position. Also, the mesh is extremely comfortable without trapping heat. It's pure genius.
Randgalt··on Apple’s expected Mac event on October 27 is official
I just hope we get 32G of RAM on the MBP. It's desperately needed.
Randgalt··on When the Genius Men of Silicon Valley Suddenly Don't Seem So Smart
That was her side of the story. Reddit had a different side. This line shows what an awful article this is. Utterly un-objective. Here's some reference on Ellen Pao: * http://www.vanityfair.com/style/scandal/2013/03/buddy-fletch... * https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2015-07-13/reddit-s-...

+1
Randgalt··on When the Genius Men of Silicon Valley Suddenly Don't Seem So Smart
I've never seen so much question begging in my life. Maybe, just maybe, Thiel doesn't believe the charges against Trump. Additionally, the hypocrisy is appalling. People gladly write checks to Hillary Clinton who over the past 30+ years has defended, provided cover and attacked the accusers of her husband who is in the exact same league as Donald Trump.
Randgalt··on How the Web Became Unreadable
If not for Safari's Reader feature I wouldn't be able to read a lot of pages. This post is spot on.
Randgalt··on An implementation of the Speculative Paxos protocol
More appropriately, don't implement these incredibly difficult protocols yourself - unless it's an exercise. Use one of the well maintained, widely used implementations.
Randgalt··on America Is Not the Greatest Country on Earth. It’s No. 28
Hands up - who'd rather be in Iceland than the US?
Randgalt··on We Don’t Simply Get Remote Jobs, We Join Remote Teams
This is great. The Digital Nomad future is upon us. I've been doing it for 3 years and it's wonderful. Live where you want. Get out of the Silicon Valley rat race.
Randgalt··on How to steal a developer's local database
That doesn't make sense. A web browser is just a TCP connection after all. If the port isn't open on the server there's no way to connect to it.
Randgalt··on Technology was meant to herald a new way of working, but that’s not the case
Elasticsearch - it's a fully distributed company. Almost all engineers work remotely from around the world. https://www.elastic.co/about/careers
Randgalt··on Technology was meant to herald a new way of working, but that’s not the case
It worked for me. I'm a true digital nomad. I moved out of the US and work whatever hours I want totally remotely. I firmly believe this is the future. Maybe it's taking longer than anticipated but it _is_ happening more and more. Just search "digital nomad" for a taste.
Randgalt··on Aetna CEO Threatened Obamacare Pullout If Feds Opposed Humana Merger
Axioms are not arbitrary - they simply are. An axiom is a recognition of the nature of reality.
Randgalt··on Aetna CEO Threatened Obamacare Pullout If Feds Opposed Humana Merger
What's the worst condition (if you don't mind saying) you've had where you had to use the Canadian system? Generally, socialized medicine works fine for routine care but badly for catastrophic (i.e. expensive) care.
Randgalt··on Aetna CEO Threatened Obamacare Pullout If Feds Opposed Humana Merger
It can easily happen again. You're the fool for thinking it can't.
