Rainymood··on Xi-editor – An editor for the next 20 years
Some key initial thoughts from a potential user that might be interesting in using Xi because he loves tinkering with new stuff:

* What is Xi? The name reminds me of Vi/Vim, so what makes it better than Vi/Vim?

* Is this a fully-fledged text editor or is this a tool in the CLI (like Vi/Vim)

* Why should I use Xi? What immediate benefits does Xi give me over say, vscode + vim extensions?

Hope this helps, didn't get much further than the first page and clicking around a bit on the website, then left.

Rainymood··on Ask HN: Do you ever go back and admire a piece of code you wrote?
Me writing docstrings: God this is so much work for nothing... my code should speak for itself.

Me 6 months later: Thank god I wrote docstrings, what is this garbled mess.

Rainymood··on Psychological effects of coding style (2016)
Personally going to Javascript from Python I actually am starting to prefer camelCase over snake_case, compare LongFunctionVariableFactoryDesigner vs long_function_variable_factory_designer, saves 4 spaces. This is all subjective of course... maybe I've been writing too much Javascript
Rainymood··on SoftBank expects $24B in losses from Vision Fund, WeWork and OneWeb
Yeah especially when a recession hits and people lose their jobs so they can finally start freelancing from an expensive desk and pay rent twice instead of working from home while they are struggling to pay rent... oh wait
Rainymood··on GitHub is now free for teams
Here's a little quiz, which of the three phases are we in now?

a) Embrace

b) Extend

c) Extinguish

Rainymood··on Data Science: Reality Doesn't Meet Expectations
Can definitely relate to this. Work for big consulting firm (F500) as a data scientist, end up in this weird software engineer/ml engineer hybrid role.

I personally love it but am doing more pure software engineering now as the infrastructure is not there and I need to build it myself.

Rainymood··on Ask HN: What is your blog and why should I read it?
You can find me at https://www.janmeppe.com/

I wrote one blog post about regex for noobs which hit the HN frontpage: https://www.janmeppe.com/blog/regex-for-noobs/

My latest post is on a leetcode problem: https://www.janmeppe.com/blog/Leetcode-378/

I write mainly for my own learning... In all honesty I write a lot, but publish very little. I fear what others think of my writing, I know this is very much an irrational fear but I still feel it. I've been writing more and am trying to overcome this fear.

Rainymood··on Zoom iOS app sends data to Facebook even if you don’t have a Facebook account
I don't think many people want to mix their professional with their personal (facebook). Doesn't facebook have this "Facebook at work thing" that no one uses?
Rainymood··on NPM Is Joining GitHub
Currently in the embrace phase ...
Rainymood··on Ask HN: How do you write code so it's easy to change?
Whole books have been written about this. I use the following rules from [1] myself. I like them because they definitely put some constraints on my coding which I like. It forces me to think beforehand and gives me (a junior developer) some guidance which I desperately need:

* Write functions/units that are <= 15 LoC.

* Create units with <4 branching points

* Write functions/units with <5 parameters

These guidelines force you to write maintainable code. Always open for discussion. Note that these lessons are lifted straight from [1].

Rainymood··on Do not log
It is my first time working on production grade code which has SLAs with other parties and well, for me, logging is crucial.

1. Logging the whole end-to-end chain allows us to view "whose fault" it is basically. We work in a microservices landscape and any request coming in the system goes through several teams. Pinpointing the team responsible for fixing their shit is important to get things up again.

2. Sometimes it happens that we (my team) drops the ball, we have some custom logging that traces the whole request through our application and we can quickly pinpoint what function failed or again whether it is a third party API call that failed or something.

For me, logging is very important, but perhaps there are better solutions available that I'm unaware of, always eager to learn and improve.

Rainymood··on Ask HN: Presentations, What's Your Routine?
Practice. Practice. Practice.

Then practice again.

Many people think they can wing it because other people can wing it. The secret to their winging it is that they practiced it 100 times beforehand.

Practice.

Rainymood··on Google's ambitious push into gaming is floundering
Google Stadia reminds me of the old adage: "Good business can save bad tech, but good tech can not save bad business."
Rainymood··on Why business is so difficult and unpredictable
What is the connection with feynman? For me, I didn't read the article, I found the website to be unbearable. Also couldn't find an "about" section about the team behind this website. Feels like an ad for their "double your revenue, pay nothing up front" service.
Rainymood··on Why I Like Math [pdf]
Can we state that math is something like religion? The search for The One Truth? I feel oddly connected with the author and his thoughts mirror mine almost completely, I was just not able to word them...
Rainymood··on ING open-sources Lion, a library of accessible and flexible Web Components
Yes! Please! I sent an email on the 27th of October 2019 with exactly the same request to dev portal at ing dot com. Definitely want this!
Rainymood··on Ask HN: Is PhD mandatory for getting into research?
>Is it possible for one to get involved in doing research without sufficient academic background?

Yes. For a single counterexample consider Simon Peyton Jones [1].

Rainymood··on Does Visual Studio Rot the Mind? (2005)
I started on Vim, then moved to Spacemacs, then Emacs with Vim bindings, now on VScode with Vim bindings... honestly, a good IDE does a lot of things for developer productivity.

We have to remember that, while we are defined by our tools, we are all still building the same thing: code. What your employer/boss/client cares about is /what/ code you produce and what business value it generates. They don't really care about /how/ you do it.

Rainymood··on Show HN: My ML applications book, which HN helped me write (sample chapter) [pdf]
Perhaps publish it on Github? Maybe someone will find a gem in there.

I have some musings [1] on Github too. Thoughts that I want to get out there but are too incoherent to become blog posts ...

Rainymood··on What’s wrong with computational notebooks?

Rainymood··on Visa Buys Plaid
Guess they survived the 3.5 year security risk [0]...

>I'm going to be really rude here (forgive me) but I feel like every time a security question comes up you dodge the question really hard.

>I want to know one thing: If I log into your service with my bank credentials. Do you store these as plaintext files (or "encrypted" files of which you have the encryption key)? Yes/No.

>Furthermore, congratulations! I've been trying to start something up like this in Europe but I feel like there are way more restrictions in Europe on banking data and this kind of third-party aggregation. Sorry for being so rude.

Rainymood··on Ask HN: What were your most impactful podcast episodes from 2019?
Exactly. "Back in the day" I remember that on HN if your post wasn't a 3 paragraph story with a well-defined point and arguments you would be downvoted into oblivion.

Rainymood··on An IT migration corrupted 1.3B customer records
The lack of testing is a symptom of a deeper root cause: cost cutting. The audacious thinking that you can just shuffle around developers that have been on the project for multiple years, outsource them to cheaper countries, count that as a win because the balance sheet looks better for that year, and then don't expect this to happen. Honestly, there is a lot of hidden knowledge that NEVER gets fully transferred in these kind of knowledge transfers and you'll only notice it once shit really starts hitting the fan.
