RJIb8RBYxzAMX9u··on Interview with a Pornhub web developer (2019)
Generally, the strength of the affection, with "love" being stronger than "like". There are other differences between "love" and "like", but this is the main (and relevant to this thread) one.
RJIb8RBYxzAMX9u··on Big Sur is both 10.16 and 11.0
It's been added since macOS 10.12 (Sierra). According to my man page. Couldn't find any authoritative sources online on that, though. However, there are several secondary references[0][1].

Thanks for the references. I think Android's versionName / versionCode are closest to what I have in mind. The problem IMHO with CFBundleVersion, CFBundleShortVersionString, et al. is that they need to be parsed before making comparisons, and this is where developers make mistakes or take shortcuts. Whereas with plain integers, direct comparisons are simple and usually correct as well. Take the story in question: I can imagine being lazy and skip over the major version part of the version string. But with integers, I wouldn't go out of the way to mask out the MSBs, no?
RJIb8RBYxzAMX9u··on Big Sur is both 10.16 and 11.0
I don't understand why -- and do educate me on why I'm wrong -- software don't just use an internal and external version number. Version numbers may have started as a technical label with precise meanings, but they've been a part of branding and marketing for a while now. It's futile to fight it[0].

Let the former be a monotonically increasing (say 64-bt) integer, and the latter be a free-form string. This way, marketing folks are free to call one version "macOS 10.16 Big Sur", followed by "macOS 11.0 Big Sur Pro Max", "macOS 10.32 Pro SE", etc. w/o developers pondering over whether "Pro SE" > "Pro Max". As for API, maybe something like getProductVersion() for the internal version, and getProductName() for the external version. Heck, be facetious and let the latter return a string like "!!! DO NOT USE FOR VERSION COMPARISON USE getProductVersion() INSTEAD !!!\07\07\07macOS 10.16 Big Sur".

Yes, lazy developers will get it wrong, similar to how they use gettimeofday()[1] instead of clock_gettime(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, ...)[2]. In their defense, often software switch between versioning conventions such that what's the "right" thing to do is unclear.

[0] Such appropriation is everywhere. Don't get me started on how Porsche Taycan, an electric car, has a "Turbo" model. It probably doesn't even come with blinker fluid standard.

I'm not trying to disparage OP's experience and accomplishment, but just trying to give a counter PoV for casual HN readers on the subject.

As many sibling posts have already pointed out, passing JLPT is not trivial for many people. Also N3 level is (IMHO at best) intermediate[0] proficiency and still quite far from fluency. Here's an example of "random" Japanese grade schoolers solving JLPT N3 questions with ease.

That said, just like any subject, language acquisition talents vary from person to person, and no doubt OP is among the more gifted.

tl; dr: do not introduce yourself in Japanese with "waga na wa [name]"[2].

RJIb8RBYxzAMX9u··on A bug in macOS 10.15.5 impacts bootable backups
File system code is tricky. Here's a similar (but less serious) bug in Linux, with btrfs[0], where ftruncate(2) would return an "impossible"[1] value. I presume the APFS bug's probably of a similar nature.

RJIb8RBYxzAMX9u··on PayPal and Venmo are still letting SIM swappers hijack accounts
Enabling 2FA should stop this from happening. Adding TOTP as your 2nd factor would require adding a recovery number, but maybe you can remove it after. I have accounts that has TOTP 2FA w/o recovery number, but perhaps they were grandfathered in.

Alternatively, use a physical token as the 2nd factor, then no recovery number is required.

RJIb8RBYxzAMX9u··on PayPal and Venmo are still letting SIM swappers hijack accounts
Google does this too when you sign in from "unknown" locations, if you don't have 2FA configured. I think the purpose is to slow down bots. If you try reusing the same number in quick succession on different accounts, Google won't let you.

I'm so glad I'm out of the family tech support "business"; if only firing real customers were so easy...

Expensive options:

- Subscribe to meal kit services like HelloFresh or Blue Apron (or both).

- Buy from other mail order grocers like Imperfect Foods, Omaha Steaks, etc.

- Hire someone with TaskRabbit to do the shopping for you, particularly from grocers that don't deliver (i.e. Trader Joe's, smaller specialty grocers, etc.).

RJIb8RBYxzAMX9u··on Taiwan says WHO failed to act on coronavirus transmission warning

While I generally agree with your overall point, this statistics is severely out of date. As of this post, the current numbers are 283 cases and 2 deaths[0][1].

When you enter, you're required to fill out a health declaration form, which asks for your contact info. IIRC, it's not cross-referenced with immigration database. Naturally, some were not filled out correctly, maliciously or not.

Of the reported cases, police got involved to track down said persons, and they were fined depending on the severity of the infraction. I don't know if the form DB is now cross-checked with the immigration DB.

This is not the same as the other two. People should wash their hands properly regardless.

You shouldn't only call a cab after going out drinking, only because you know there'll be a checkpoint that night, right?

I'm also using a Mac, as are most of my co-workers, and it's fine for us 99% of the time.

If you're on Catalina, be sure to grant the appropriate permissions to FF. You should only have to do this once -- the first time -- but this could explain why audio's not working for you.

I use Hangouts Meet on a daily basis with Firefox, and AFAIK everything works. Screen / window sharing, live transcripts, recording, etc. all work fine.

There was a period a few months (over a year?) ago where Hangouts Meet would reject Firefox and tell you to use Chrome, but certainly not anymore.

RJIb8RBYxzAMX9u··on Sanoid – Replication and Backups with ZFS
https://github.com/openzfs/zfs/commit/b52563034230b35f0562b6...

"The last addition is the ability to do raw, encrypted sends and receives. The idea here is to send raw encrypted and compressed data and receive it exactly as is on a backup system. This means that the dataset on the receiving system is protected using the same user key that is in use on the sending side. By doing so, datasets can be efficiently backed up to an untrusted system without fear of data being compromised."

Unfortunately it's taking a long time for the feature to propagate through the ZFS implementations. I don't know if rsync.net's servers support it.

RJIb8RBYxzAMX9u··on Ask HN: How are you preparing for COVID-19 disruptions?
That's because many people are disgusting and don't give a fuck about proper hygiene. Just among my acquaintances I need both hands an a foot to count the number that don't even vaguely cover their mouth / nose -- let alone _properly_ cover -- while coughing or sneezing.

No amount of gentle reminder -> passive aggressive suggestion -> explicit suggestion had lasting effects on their behavior. All I could do is be vigilant and recluse myself from their company whenever one's clearly showing symptoms.

RJIb8RBYxzAMX9u··on Shit – An implementation of Git using POSIX shell
I'm not certain that git will be the dominant VCS forever, as I'd used CVS, Perforce, Subversion, Mercurial, in various degrees when they were dominant (or at least relevant).

Who knows, maybe Linus will have another epiphany, while Microsoft somehow mismanages GitHub and squanders all the goodwill away. Then, a group of upstarts...

That said, wanting to learn git's internals for the sake of knowledge is fine as motivation.

OTOH, FreeBSD's man pages[0] are superb compared to that of Linux for most subjects. I usually don't bother with -h and go straight to the man pages.
