I solve hard problems with hardware, software and systems.

Currently, I am a lead applied research scientist working on the future of AI and software development.

I was a Technical Advisor to the CTO at Microsoft working on AI/ML, agents, and the systems they work with.

I was the cofounder of Transparent Systems - instant settlement for business. https://transparentsystems.com

Previously, I was Paul Allen's Technical Advisor at Vulcan. I also worked on Project Natick - Microsoft's undersea data center - https://www.projectnatick.com and Holoportation (now mobile!) - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/project/holoportation-3/

Qworg··on Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge
IIRC (it has been a few years), we only need a few degrees to reach a tipping point. The decay of methane hydrates could push out 1000 GT CO2 equivalent suddenly, accelerating warming by roughly ~40-50 years.
Qworg··on Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge
The desire for energy is near limitless - PoW simply bends the curve upward. As the price of BTC increases, the drive for less costly energy slackens off.

The issue is clearly a tragedy of the commons - the cost (higher air pollution/higher energy costs) is socialized, while the profits are centralized. So the maximization function is cheap >>> anything else. Why wouldn't we expect more and larger coal plants versus research into fusion reactors?

Qworg··on An analysis of Bitcoin's throughput bottlenecks
Unless you value the time your money that is locked up at zero, they are definitely credit - as GP said, fully-collateralized loans.
Qworg··on An analysis of Bitcoin's throughput bottlenecks
Payment channels ARE credit, generally - I'm sorry this proposal was rejected. Was there a reason for the rejection?

VisaNet will do 76,000 tps - 4 orders of magnitude.
Qworg··on The Ultimate Guide to Inflation
The issue with the WTP argument is that Netflix isn't a singular good - there are many replacement goods (Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video) that push down the price via competition. The lack of raw materials makes this competition especially good at keeping prices low.

Now, if the oligopoly within video services (or anywhere else) would conspire to raise prices together - that'd be a different story. We've seen this in other digital goods. The Apple and Google anti-poaching agreements come to mind.

Qworg··on M1 Money Stock
There's a chunk of Americans who don't have bank accounts (or could work a government account online), so standard methods may not work for 100% of the population.

Also, the Fed is very leery of destroying commercial banking in the US via postal banking or a direct CBDC - I'd expect (if we ever do go that way) for there to a hybrid model. Under that system, banks provide the services to support a digital dollar, while the Fed works through them.

As for "why blockchain" - there's no real reason if the Fed is going to do the work/be the source of trust.

Qworg··on M1 Money Stock
Do note the postscript below the graph - in May 2020, they changed how the M1 is calculated, adding all of the savings accounts into it. That explains the giant jump.

Is the Fed printing money? Yes. Is it dire? Unknown.

Qworg··on Farming robot kills 100k weeds per hour with lasers
Depends on the wavelength/absorption. The goal was to attack both the root and the leaf. There are more mechanical methods using steam + a spike that work very well too.

Here's a very (terribly) high level technology overview from the company we were working with: https://g-neighbor.com/gni-technology/

> The reason a plant is green is because it reflects green light and for photosynthesis a plant uses blue light. Overloading the blue frequency range disrupts the enzymes in the photosynthetic process, which cuts off the food supply to the plant and it dies. Some herbicides overload the metabolic system of the plant and makes the weed burn from the inside out. I thought that overloading the photosynthetic system would maybe do the same thing.

Qworg··on Farming robot kills 100k weeds per hour with lasers
Not at this time - founded a fintech company instead.

I do miss hardware though!

Qworg··on Farming robot kills 100k weeds per hour with lasers
Depends on the laser(s) and the weeds in question. Deep rooted weeds require different IR/UV than broadleaf.

They actually kill them because they cook the root. That's ALSO why it has to be autonomous - it can't be done at a run.

We worked on this when I was at MTD, but I think they abandoned the project after I left.

Qworg··on NFT the DP
The responses to that thread go into more detail, but I'll ask the more direct and pertinent question:

IPFS requires someone to pin the data - who will be doing that going forward? The platform? The artist? The owner? Thus far, it isn't anyone's responsibility to make sure the IPFS hash returns.

Qworg··on NFT the DP
Who is pinning it?

There are polled stock you can use - no need for dehorning.
Qworg··on Iberian Citadel of Calafell, Iron Age Village
Skara Brae was occupied as early as 3180 BC. Egyptians didn't finish the first pyramids until ~2600 BC.

It is truly a wonder - especially given the different circumstances than a fertile river valley.

Qworg··on Launch HN: Mezli (YC W21) – Robotic restaurants that serve healthy fast food
> Our human-powered ghost kitchen is dishing out our Mediterranean menu from our San Mateo location (Stop by! https://order.mezli.com). At the same time, we’re building our full-scale food-safe v2 prototype and are shooting to have it up and serving customers later this month. Once our auto-kitchen is working reliably and is robust enough to handle a few knocks, we’re going to start forward-deploying it to parking lots and garages in the Bay Area to test out our operational model. Then, it’ll be time to build multiple auto-kitchens and eventually develop multiple concepts so each auto-kitchen rotates to a new menu on a regular cadence.
Qworg··on Launch HN: Mezli (YC W21) – Robotic restaurants that serve healthy fast food
Ah, smart move running the test process with people first, then rotating towards automation. What estimates do you have around cost reduction/efficiency gains with your approach (given capex)?

Qworg··on Central Banking for All: A Public Option for Bank Accounts (2018) [pdf]
There's an excellent Fintech Beat podcast that covers the cons for a proposal like this in detail (centered around CBDC, but many of the arguments remain): https://pca.st/episode/e06c5ca7-df90-4fcf-86da-5ba2d5f0ead1
Qworg··on Central Banking for All: A Public Option for Bank Accounts (2018) [pdf]
In these proposals (which with the new CBDC furor going on are more common again), it would look a lot like China. The central bank would pick the "Agriculture Bank" or the "Industrial Bank", and hand over a set of deposits to enable loans. Hardly a model for success.
Qworg··on Microsoft finds underwater datacenters are reliable, practical and sustainable
Sadly, no. The physics follow though - water has a much higher specific heat than air, so you have to move much less water than air for equivalent cooling. The production of heat by the processors is the same (and you save on air handling electricity/cooling processes, as the water is already cool in the ocean). As for the oceans absorbing the heat, that's how it works anyways - a unit of heat released in the atmosphere has to be sunk somewhere and the ocean is the "Earth's biggest heat bucket".
Qworg··on Microsoft finds underwater datacenters are reliable, practical and sustainable
I used to work on this project - water cooling is more efficient than air and heat generated by computing is the same. The heat ends up in the ocean anyways.
