Qwertie··on Why I never finish my Haskell programs
Part of the reason I stopped using haskell is because of how generalized everything is. I want to get something basic done and you are expected to read a whole book some maths topic to understand how do something basic. Another language would have an example on how to do that thing 99% of users are trying to do but in haskell land they want you to understand the 1000 different ways the library can be used and piece that together to work out what you want.

Thats the case for apple chargers. I have seen that macbook chargers fail after about 6 months use because they switched to a plastic that was less toxic. Conveniently the side of the cable that always fails is the one you can't remove from the brick so you have to buy a new $100 charger at least once a year.
Qwertie··on Bye bye BetterSlack
If I make a browser extension that grabs your auth token and all of your messages and sends it to my server. How is slack meant to fix that?

If this threat is legally valid, doesn't that mean all adblockers/tracker blockers could be made illegal?
Qwertie··on Show HN: I'm 12, learning JS, and wrote Wolfram's cellular automaton in Node
Ah yes, you are right. Got those mixed up.

Nice work. I'm not a JS expert but I think I saw a bug.

Inside of animate() you are calling setTimeout() to automatically call animate repeatedly but this is also calling setTimeout() every time animate runs but setTimeout() should only be run once.

You should be able to take

  setTimeout(() => {
    animate();
  }, 100);
and paste it over animate() on the last line
Qwertie··on IRC turns thirty
I tried that once. Main issue is you have to reply to the pings or you get kicked.

I have found Matrix to be easier to interact with. You need a HTTP client instead of netcat but it's super simple to send JSON from a program or terminal.

Qwertie··on IRC turns thirty
I only started using irc about 5 years ago but I have been using it daily since then and yeah the people on it aren't too bad. I have only really seen tech stuff on it recently, all the non tech irc channels I was in moved to discord :L
Qwertie··on IRC turns thirty
The speed has gotten better recently. It usually sends messages in under 1 second. The UI is still a little laggy when switching tabs but everything is slowly getting more polished and faster.
Qwertie··on Electric Scooters in New York City? They Just Might Work
My fitness has improved so much since owning an ebike. Yeah it's not nearly as much work as using a regular bike but unless you are using a bike all the time you are going to see a massive improvement from switching from a car to an ebike.
Qwertie··on [dead]
They have some decent videos. The one about the history of neon lights in hong kong was good.
Qwertie··on Who Left Open The Cookie Jar?
Potentially. Although in my experience safari works 99% the same as chrome so I'd bet a bunch of devs just assume if it works on chrome it will work on safari.
Qwertie··on Deleting Facebook
Will you ever actually talk to these people? I have lots of these people in my contacts list who I once knew but haven't spoken to in ages. I have never once randomly messaged one of them.
Qwertie··on Deleting Facebook
Thats illegal since the GDPR.
Qwertie··on Who Left Open The Cookie Jar?
I'd say the majority of websites were never tested on safari because most small dev places can't afford to buy macbooks just to test one browser.
Qwertie··on Americans Own Less Stuff, and That’s Reason to Be Nervous
The market can only sort it out if the lifespan of the product is made clear. If I buy a fridge today, I have no idea how long it will last. I can't see what standards the fridge was engineered to or what shortcuts they took and by the time it's known how long that model lasts it's already off the market and replaced with a new one.

By recycling they likely mean burning the phone and getting about 10% of the valuable material back out of it.
Qwertie··on Americans Own Less Stuff, and That’s Reason to Be Nervous
Thats kind of how warranty works only that usually the product lasts much longer than the warranty.
Qwertie··on Americans Own Less Stuff, and That’s Reason to Be Nervous
They could be much cheaper to repair if they used standard parts so repair places didn't have to order in custom pieces that they only use about 1 per year because every fridge has it's own version.
Qwertie··on Americans Own Less Stuff, and That’s Reason to Be Nervous
Most people don't live particularly close to one.

>If a car is not cool enough for me to want to own, why would I care to use the communal car rather than the bus? Can the auto industry survive selling 10% of the vehicles is does now?

Not every industry has to survive forever. Can the telegraph industry survive the ~0% of sales it had before? Cars just aren't that useful in densely populated areas. The US will have to move away from personal vehicle transport and to mass transport/walking/cycling.

Qwertie··on 11-year-old boy hacks into replica U.S. vote site in minutes
This article is really poor quality and gives no useful information at all. What even is a replica of the vote system? By the sounds of the article they could have just inspect element substituted words on the page.

>“It would be extremely difficult to replicate these systems since many states utilize unique networks and custom-built databases with new and updated security protocols,”

More meaningless words. "unique networks and custom-built databases" Makes it sound even less secure but I agree with how it would be pretty much impossible to create a replica unless it's all open source.

Qwertie··on Snap’s Drop in Active Users Could Signal a Social Media Peak
In Australia SMS is still widely used because of IM fragmentation. A proprietary IM platform will never take over and we will stay in the current mess until one of the open source standards become well used.
Qwertie··on Snap’s Drop in Active Users Could Signal a Social Media Peak
It's bad, but bad intentionally. I haven't noticed it being buggy like snap chat. They just went out of their way to break features the browser gives you for free.

>wish they had some way to make money

No one wants to pay for things anymore so what we have is a cycle of good tech that runs on investor money and makes none on it's own and then it gets sold to microsoft or whoever and they attempt to turn it in to something that makes money on it's own without charging for the service until everyone gets so sick of the product they move to the next new thing.

Instagram has a pretty craptastic UI itself. It's a pain in the ass to copy images from the web UI (Have to use the inspector to get the link) and the video player doesn't let you skip ahead or move back.
Qwertie··on Snap’s Drop in Active Users Could Signal a Social Media Peak
IM is honestly the number 1 social media right now. Its real communication with people you actually care about and not a popularity contest or marketing and no algorithm trying to tell you what you should be looking at.

Could you explain exactly how blockchains allow societies to create ideas? I'm not sure how append only lists allow idea sharing in ways a database does not.
Qwertie··on Let's Encrypt Root Trusted by All Major Root Programs
Doesn't that only encrypt half the trip?
Qwertie··on Let's Encrypt Root Trusted by All Major Root Programs
I heard the cost of EV certs is pretty high so it's much less likely a scammer will buy an EV cert vs just a similar domain and a regular cert.
