Qwertie··on How to Make Everything Ourselves: Open Modular Hardware
You can just buy the closest match and cut off a bit of the end. In the end it's much better for everyone to standardize on the superior units
Qwertie··on How to Make Everything Ourselves: Open Modular Hardware
Once the lego patents expired all the lego clones had perfect compatibility with lego.
Qwertie··on Some clients use SRV lookups, a few (to their embarrassment) do not (2009)
SRV lookups for http would have been great as some ISPs block well known ports.
Qwertie··on Teens Who Hacked Microsoft's Xbox Empire and Went Too Far
Only in America. The rest of the world doesn't have the DMCA.
Qwertie··on Teens Who Hacked Microsoft's Xbox Empire and Went Too Far
At the same time there has never been another point in history where so much open source software is freely available to everyone.
Qwertie··on Teens Who Hacked Microsoft's Xbox Empire and Went Too Far
There is plenty of software on your local machines that can be hacked risk free. No one will care if you find an exploit in your own IoT doormat.
Qwertie··on GitLab 11 released
Ah fair enough. The change makes sense then.
Qwertie··on GitLab 11 released
IMO Master makes sense. The Master user is in full control, there is no one higher than the master.
Qwertie··on GitLab 11 released
Git sensibly calls the master branch `master`.
Qwertie··on GitLab 11 released
All the extra features is the main selling point of GitLab. It's the reason you use it over GitHub because GitLab is more than just repo hosting and issue tracking.
Qwertie··on Tell HN: I miss the old internet
Sort of yeah. Semi-hidden/private groups on IM apps can be really good.
Qwertie··on Gitea – Alternative to GitLab and GitHub
How is getting a VPS and running a git server, then setting up everyone's SSH key and accounts and then setting up accounts on trello and whatever other services you need (How are you doing CI in this setup) meant to be easier than dropping gitea on a server and having everything you need in one place and with a simple GUI.

Sure you CAN use git without a web UI, We had that at work for a while and it was not a good experience at all compared to using gitlab which we have now and we now have so many features that let us get things done faster.

Qwertie··on GitLab is open core, GitHub is closed source (2016)
No one wants to self host wikipedia but many self host wikis that are off topic for wikipedia.
Qwertie··on GitLab is open core, GitHub is closed source (2016)
Being able to self host and fork are huge, if GitLab ever goes off in a bad direction there will be a fork instantly that can continue.
Qwertie··on Microsoft acquires Github
You have obviously never used gitlab in depth. I have never seen a tech company so open about everything they do with the community.
Qwertie··on GitLab sees huge spike in project imports
Gitlab is a 100% remote company so everything they do is communicated online and a huge chunk of the time they publish their communications and decision making. You can read all the things the considered while working out if they should remove the CLA for example and see live feeds of what is going on when they are trying to fix an issue.
Qwertie··on GitLab sees huge spike in project imports
Source on gitlab crashing? I'm using it right now and it's fine other than the monitoring page getting resized right now due to very unusual load.
Qwertie··on GitLab sees huge spike in project imports
The current talks are about basing it on ActivityPub which is an open spec but of course it would only work on software which supports it.
Qwertie··on GitLab sees huge spike in project imports
I have been using gitlab heavily for the last year and since then nothing terrible has happened. The worst thing was for one day it was pretty slow but was fixed the next day and no data was lost.

GitLab today in my opinion is now a better piece of software than github.

Qwertie··on How to Android without Google
There is android without google. My device uses 0 google services.
Qwertie··on Telegram App Says Apple Is Blocking Updates Over Dispute with Russia
Which is why I can't use it because most of my messages are sent from desktop.
Qwertie··on Telegram App Says Apple Is Blocking Updates Over Dispute with Russia
Many don't for that exact reason. Restrictions is one of the main arguments for pc gaming.
Qwertie··on Telegram App Says Apple Is Blocking Updates Over Dispute with Russia
The people who would stop buying iphones over this were never buying iphones to begin with.
Qwertie··on Telegram App Says Apple Is Blocking Updates Over Dispute with Russia
I think the best option is picking your own gatekeeper. fdroid and redhat are the gatekeepers of my system but if they turn bad I can choose better ones.
Qwertie··on Telegram App Says Apple Is Blocking Updates Over Dispute with Russia
iOS doesn't allow this because Apple makes shitloads more money from mobile than desktop. They recently blocked Valves app from iOS because it allows you to stream games from another device which puts apples cut from the app store at risk. They don't care about steam on OSX because they make so much less money there.
Qwertie··on Telegram App Says Apple Is Blocking Updates Over Dispute with Russia
Thats the reality now. Many companies are based entirely on mobile apps. How would a service like uber work without relying on Android/iOS
Qwertie··on How a Pentagon Contract Became an Identity Crisis for Google
Also Google has been doing the same thing for ages. You don't get a job at google and then think "Wow they track data, I'm gonna leave on day one" If you found their tracking objectionable you never would have taken the job to begin with.
Qwertie··on I put all my personal data on eBay
Also the potato salad kickstarter[0]. Raised $55,000 to make a potato salad. Lots of clones appeared and made about $10.

Qwertie··on ICANN Files Legal Action in Germany to Preserve WHOIS Data
Should be at least on request only so you have to have a valid reason to request it so spammers can't get it.
Qwertie··on Why Is Location Data No Longer Private?
Which is even harder because you have to convince the masses to care instead of just messing with some code to fix the problem for yourself
