QuadDamaged··on Ask HN: Coding outdoors
I work in an open space in London. Even if I could setup hypothetically get access to a rooftop like you, I'd be pretty much drenching my laptop and catching a cold.

TL;DR: Jealous!

QuadDamaged··on Introducing UberTAXI
Give me a sec I have some code I need to fix...
QuadDamaged··on Introducing UberTAXI
Good timing, because in about 1 hour from now, at 14:00 BST / 13:00 UTC (as if there were such a thing as British Summer), the London Black Cabs will stage a protest that will gridlock London. Not that anyone stuck in London traffic will be able to tell the difference.

edit: DST is hard

QuadDamaged··on Dash – Beautiful instant offline docs for almost everything
Dash is beautiful because it doesn't get in your way. Very flexible, and even the most convoluted features are quite simple to configure.

My only wish is that it would let me use a 'night mode' so I can use white text on dark background at night.

QuadDamaged··on Visual Studio 14 Preview
alt-shift-enter, go fullscreen, ditch the windows chrome. I don't understand how you would want a Metro UI for vs.net - such a waste of screen real-estate!
QuadDamaged··on Flappy Bird in Swift
I am really intrigued by the obj-c interop capability of swift, namely interactions between blocks and closures / anonymous functions.

I can see my AFNetworking code becoming much, much more readable now, without the need to @weakify/@strongify self on both sides of the block, but just add a blanket '[unowned self] in' inside the closure.

QuadDamaged··on Young Bankers Fed Up With 90-Hour Weeks Move to Startups
Here in London, Barclays is about to boot 7k staff from its investment banking division. The writing was already on the wall for contractors, bankers looking for another industry is par for the course.
QuadDamaged··on CShell: A simple, yet powerful, C# scripting IDE
A C# REPL is welcome indeed, but C# is still too verbose for its own good. The F# REPL is much more useful when exploring dataset.
QuadDamaged··on What can men do?
Indeed, although there are extremes here I feel are quite detrimental.

I am not a fan of the "Liquid Lunch" culture I've seen from contractors working for some crown-owned banks who can't pay 200% bonuses this year, nor am I 100% sold on the mandatory company pub-quizz for new media agencies, feels too much like mandatory fun.

Beer trolley OTOH, I'm in :) IIRC the German SAP dev team breakroom is garnished with beer taps. Might explain a lot about ABAP.

QuadDamaged··on What can men do?
No drinking at work?

London-based companies are doomed.

QuadDamaged··on “Artery chokes after 70 copies of Visual Studio”
I've killed so many devenv.exe in my career that there must be some kind of warrant on my name in Redmond.

I agree that vs.net is not really pertinent to the core 'hacker' audience here, but this bug report is actually relevant to me, and I didn't get it from my MS-oriented feeds.

I should read HN's FAQ, but aren't articles making it to the front page by being upvoted from new?

QuadDamaged··on “Artery chokes after 70 copies of Visual Studio”
I run multiple instances of vs.net and don't reboot every week, In my case, I'm cycling through at least 10 instances a day. This bug report is actually interesting (to me).
QuadDamaged··on C++ Event Listener Design Pattern
The ClassID trick is reminiscent of ObjC's KVO addObserver:forKeyPath:options:context: - you typically pass a context to sort-out which type of object you are observing, because the observer only has one entry point for KVO notification.

static void* kFooContext= &kFooContext

... [foo addObserver:self forKeyPath:@"bar" options:... context:kFooContext ] ...

if(context==kFooContext){ NSFoo* foo=(NSFoo*)object;... }

A better alternative is to use a blocks/lambda based approach, that way you can have several distinct callbacks and don't have to handle routing yourself. (see Facebook KVOController)

QuadDamaged··on Unified EU electronic identity card
Case in point: HMRC (UK Taxman) is about to sell 'anonymized' taxpayer data. With enough 'anonymized' data-dumps and CPU power, at some point, it will become trivial to correlate an ID Card ID with datapoints.
QuadDamaged··on How Altering Your Diet Can Greatly Improve Your Productivity
My schedule changed 2 years ago when I had to start working early hours (market openings), rather than the typical late morning till late evenings.

I had the hardest time working on the staple dev diet (caffeine + sugars). Switched to low (well, none) carbs + 30 minutes of exercise before work, definitely changes how my energy flows during the day. Mornings are now extremely productive, peak at 4PM then downhill from there.

QuadDamaged··on [dead]
The costs tied to bootstraping / prototyping definitely went down in ten years, just by virtue of the technology evolving.

There were no cheap github/docker/aws/RoR ten years ago. These tools are catalysts for developer productivity, although it can be argued that we now have even more tools that act as catalysts for developer procrastination.

QuadDamaged··on Unified EU electronic identity card
You can't hurt what's already dead.
QuadDamaged··on Space Colony Art from the 1970s
I was so thrilled the first time I saw Babylon 5's cylinder designed. 2001's toroid design was indeed iconic, but it kind of anchored the idea of what a space station should like for several decades!
QuadDamaged··on Delphi – why won't it die? (2013)
This is spot-on. The university I attended offered a MS MFC certification trail ('97), I politely declined after using Borland C++ Buider during my internship. MFC had so much Win32 cruft percolating out of everywhere! I was amazed the VCL managed to insulate the user from most of it.
QuadDamaged··on Swedish politicians settle differences with StarCraft tournament
The swedes always had a very big eSports scene, which started to break mainstream about 2 years ago, when the DreamHack SC2 finals were broadcast live on Swedish national TV.

I was watching the show at our local Barcraft and we had a hard time getting the place booked for us, just shows the gap in geek culture acceptance between the UK and Sweden!

QuadDamaged··on Delphi – why won't it die? (2013)
C++ Builder made C++ on Windows so much more accessible than MS Visual Studio 4 + MFC at the time. Truly a revolutionary platform.
QuadDamaged··on Delphi – why won't it die? (2013)
The lead architect of the VCL went-on to work for Microsoft on .Net and most of the venerable (and still working, if not actively maintained) Winforms API is really reminiscent of the VCL, albeit corrupted by the win32 API leaking through.

Maybe it is rose-tinted glasses, but I remember having a significantly more pleasant experience working wight the VCL (through C++ Builder) than with Winforms.

QuadDamaged··on Delphi – why won't it die? (2013)
I fondly remember installing a Pascal interpreter card in my Apple //e for UCSD Pascal - a branch of Pascal running in a VM. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UCSD_Pascal
QuadDamaged··on OpenWorm: A Digital Organism In Your Browser
I met John who worked on their (paid) iPhone app for the earlier prototype. There's one thing you can say it's that they are passionate about their project. The old prototype is here: (paid, is it OK to link this on HN?) https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/openworm-browser/id595581306...
