Propelloni··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
People make it sound as if Munich flip-flopped on Linux. The then ruling social-democrats and the greens started the LiMux project in 2003! The social-democrats and the conservative christians ruling in 2020 switched back to MS Windows. The current administration is mandating open source but not specifically Linux.

I use Linux since the year 2000 and it has been ruff in the early days, no doubt. The desktop competition were MS Windows 2000 and XP, often lauded as peak MS Windows. Apple had all but disappeared. But 2020 I'd wager that average KDE desktop vs. average MS Windows 10 desktop would be a draw. Today it would be a KDE desktop win, but that's more due to MS Windows 11 suckiness than the leaps and bounds Linux made.

Propelloni··on Excel now supports multiple values in a single cell
So, Excel is just the poor man's shadow IT? I like that picture.
Propelloni··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
Oral exams don't scale at the beginning with hundreds of students per course, agreed. So make them in-person written exams, German universities managed that just fine a few decades ago. Oral exams were reserved to advance from Grundstudium (basic) to Hauptstudium (main).

In my very limited experience (I have German major degrees in Informatik and Philosophy, I was a TA for Logic in Philosophy) the more advanced the topic the thinner the attendance anyway.

Propelloni··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
Maybe the Germans were right? One in-person test, preferably an interview, at the end of the semester should be enough to motivate the smarter part of the bunch to make sure they understand the issues at hand. The rest is chaff anyway. Don't optimize for chaff.
Propelloni··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
> other renewables

Nuclear power is not a renewable power source in the technical correct meaning of the word. Fission material is "only" abundant, in that we can win nuclear fission material from many sources, including recycling spent nuclear material, but it is not available and spent without human intervention (otherwise we could argue fossil fuels are renewables, too).

As an aside, nuclear fission power differs from renewable power in many other ways, too. It is not clean, it is not easy to harvest, it is not safe, it is not cheap, it is not a mass job engine, it is not low-maintenance, it has less utility, and it has less flexibility.

Propelloni··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
I see what you did there :D Good one, thank you!
Propelloni··on I said no and Apple said yes
Not only that, Spanish is the second most spoken language of the world, behind Mandarin and before English.
Propelloni··on I said no and Apple said yes
For both you can just call your local PC shop, which are much more common than Apple stores, at least around here.
Propelloni··on AI chatbots give wrong answers to financial queries 'most of the time'
Full agreement. I'm double-taxed in Germany and the US. I don't have a residency in the US (so I cannot vote but still get taxed, nice!) so I'm completely unable to buy VFIAX or any other fund from the US. I cannot but them over an EU brokerage, either, because US ETF and its ilk violate European transparency laws. I can buy EU-domiciled funds, but those are treated as PFIC in the US with prohibitive taxation. I relegated myself to an old-school dividend growth investment scheme and it's financially working out much better than I anticipated but still, I'd like to have a core of a stupid ACWI tracker.
Propelloni··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
Fear really IS the mindkiller! Stop being afraid and start educating yourself. You are on HN, you are supposed to be smart.
Propelloni··on Minimal Phone 2
I get what you are saying. I'm coming from a Sony Xperia 10 IV with a width of 68 mm and it was perfect, albeit a bit tall (21:9 format). Now I use a Motorola Edge 60 Neo with a width of nearly 71 mm with the "traditional" 16:9 format. It is almost as tall and just slightly out of reach of one-handed use for me. The Minimal 2 is wider at 72 mm, the Clicks is even wider. I'm going to look at the Razr, it's frustrating.
Propelloni··on Laurie Anderson’s next manuscript to be locked away for 88 years
Vanity is not a trait exclusive to people born in an ill-defined interval of time. You internet using people need to come up with a better term for people you want to blame for everything bad in the world. Jobs, Wozniak, Berners-Lee, or that Ethernet dude, Metcalfe, are not responsible for the end of the world.
Propelloni··on The Lost Treasure of Sid Meier's Pirates
There was dancing in Pirates?

EDIT: did a quick search. I played Pirates on the C64 and never heard of the rather recent "Gold" edition for PC. I know where I'm going to spend the next weekend! Thanks for bringing it to my attention <3

Propelloni··on Pixel Watch 5
Can't speak for the OP, but I, for one, don't wear a watch while sleeping. I use a Junghans alarm clock from 1989.

I use my watch for time, step counting, and ringing/vibrating. Having my phone on silent and not missing calls (not messages, messenger are not allowed to send notifications to my watch) is such a step up for me :)

Propelloni··on More German than many Germans
I'm not a car fan of any kind or shape. I'm talking about things that happened. I say let's wait and see. You say you know the future. You tell me "facts over feelings".

I accept your negative outlook and respect your right to hold that opinion. But, and I'm saying this in the most respectful way possible, let's have a little intellectual honesty here, please. Your statement is more speculation than mine.

Propelloni··on More German than many Germans
Hey newbie, I'm sorry my comment hurt you. But you don't have to be able to read German to apply the charity principle [1] and be a decent human being. Love you, too.

Propelloni··on More German than many Germans
They said the same when Japanese car makers were trashing European and US manufacturers in the 1980s. Yet they adapted. Then they said the same when the South Koreans trashed them, yet they adapted. Now they say the same about the Chinese.

Sure, past performance is no indicator of future performance, but all the doom-saying and hysterics are just that, fear of the unknown.

Propelloni··on Dolmenwood: Fantasy RPG built around the acclaimed Old-School Essentials rules
At least BRP (the system behind Runequest) and d6 are actively developed and there are games, new and old, using them. They are also rather popular, at least if one browses rpg.net.

T&T I don't know. I think there is a new edition coming along?

Propelloni··on Microsoft is using TPM chips to crack down on pirated Windows activations
> What is windows actually good at?

Domain control and group policies, unfortunately. Crucial for enterprises.

Propelloni··on CarPlay Is Additive
Can't speak for Carplay, but Android Auto does try to distract me with attempts of engagement like "Is the construction site still there?" and other shit. The car's (an Audi) system does not, but it fails on many other levels. Both make me angry, albeit for different reasons.
Propelloni··on Why thinking out loud with someone beats thinking alone
Agreed. I have to write stuff down, with a pen, on paper, for this to work. Typing into a machine works sort of, but not on the same level.
Propelloni··on Mistral AI acquires Emmi AI
Since 2024 the USA is draining brains into Europe in science in general but esp. in climate research, health research, and "tech" research. I can't find good numbers on IT specifically (except that the UK seems to be draining towards EU).

Commercialisation of research is still hard in comparison to the USA, though.

Propelloni··on Germany suspends military approval for long stays abroad for men under 45
Because there is no such commission? Are you sure, you went through a mustering physical? There is no commission waiting to see your wiener. There is an MD to examine you. The MD writes a report that is attached to your file.

What the commission might get serious with is enforcing the mustering process, regardless if it is about the medical exam or the aptitude tests.

Propelloni··on France Launches Government Linux Desktop Plan as Windows Exit Begins
There were and are initiatives. Of course, they were and are ridiculed all the time. Who can't recall LiMuX or check out ZenDIS (Zentrum für Digitale Souveränität in der öffentlichen Verwaltung). Read up on the current migration away from MS Office in Schleswig-Holstein.
Propelloni··on Show HN: I built a tiny LLM to demystify how language models work

Propelloni··on Euro-Office – Your sovereign office
Where does it show that? Cursory probes put the created_at dates around the two to three weeks mark, e.g. for DocumentServer. The before-mentioned web-apps was created "2025-10-14T07:56:45Z", or so says the github API.
Propelloni··on NIMBY Rails
As someone who operates in the planning/approval space I can say it is kind of a relief to just steamroll through some posh neighborhood.
Propelloni··on College instructor turns to typewriters to curb AI use, teach life lessons
TFA is about students learning a language (German). How can a student critically verify AI output of a supposedly German sentence if the student does not speak German?

I guess you are knee-jerking and confounding two notions: a) learning something, b ) using something, which are not the same. Using something that already knows something else is as old as pie, to wit, my tax advisor. If I want to be a tax advisor myself, I have to learn this shit and not outsource to another tax adsvisor. Typewriters help students learning a language by removing a distraction. Should the students to this themselves? Yes, but we all should spend less time on the internet, yet we don't. This tells us something ;)
