PrinceKropotkin··on Why Are We Living in a Golden Age of Historical Fiction? (2019)
This can also swing the other way, shining a light on ways of living (certainly including societies much less violent than the Roman Empire, a civilization neurotically focused on domination) & experiences that have since been lost and are more or less impossible to achieve now.
PrinceKropotkin··on Denisovan DNA found in cave on Tibetan Plateau
Mountaineering is literally a mountain cult (non-pejoratively) so this wouldn't even be inaccurate once you translate "religion" into anthropological terms.
PrinceKropotkin··on What's in a Linux Executable?
Why does linux only support ELF?

Other executable formats, for instance, support multiple architectures per file. Why does Linux not?

PrinceKropotkin··on Xbox creator Seamus Blackley baked a 4,500-year-old Egyptian sourdough
Who said anything about DNA?

Regardless, it's heinous to justify a crime like this. It also leaves an extremely bitter taste to come across a museum in Europe with artifacts stolen during some more blatantly colonial period that they forgot to return.

PrinceKropotkin··on A CIA Officer Visits Moscow, Returns with Mysterious, Crippling Headaches
> are we up to dirty stuff like this too?

Yes.

PrinceKropotkin··on The Most Surveilled Cities in the World
As a major believer in respecting pronoun usage it's ridiculous this is a crime.
PrinceKropotkin··on Apple, Google and a Deal That Controls the Internet
I'm all for anti-trust action, and especially legislation, against Google and other large corporations with app stores and ads and other things perverting otherwise decent product interactions. But this just seems like a terrible way to frame the nature of Google's anti-consumer behavior.
PrinceKropotkin··on Zoom Deleted Events Discussing Zoom “Censorship”
Ironically this link is only a few notches above "GitLab ceases operations in Iran".

Sure, it's a different situation and arguably not a comparable form of censorship, but it's certainly a case of a state leaning on companies to adjust who they do business with. I would argue with far more substantial, immediate harm....

PrinceKropotkin··on Vdx – An intuitive CLI for processing video, powered by FFmpeg
Yes, it does.
PrinceKropotkin··on A small but complete JavaScript engine
There's nothing about javascript that makes it particularly suited for "web applications". This doesn't seem any more ridiculous than, say, using python or perl.
PrinceKropotkin··on YouTube-dl has received a DMCA takedown from RIAA
> The fact that copyrighted works were included in the readme shows it was intended for that use

Just because copyrighted works are on youtube and are seen as an example of youtube content does not mean the software was built with the express intent to violate copyright. That just doesn't follow.

PrinceKropotkin··on Rust-GPU: Making Rust a first-class language and ecosystem for GPU code
I don't see C going away. That said, there does seem to be a cultural change afoot.
PrinceKropotkin··on Dreams of a Red Emperor: The Relentless Rise of Xi Jinping
This isn't comparable at all. The territorial expansion was always difficult to sustain and grew from a ravenous, irrational ethnonationalist political culture and the need for oil and other industrializing resources. China's mode of imperialism is inherently based on China's geography and centralized bureaucracy. There is no analogue of the Emperor being both absolutely powerful and removed from day to day decision making. There's not much analogue to the ethnonationalism angle either, their apparent persecution of the Uighurs stems from internal social control, not fueling a war machine, and they've adopted the soviet multinational state. The CCP is much more politically & economically competent and geographically stable than Japan was leading into WWII. The idea of japan attacking pearl harbor was arguably inevitable, but the idea of china doing that is beyond ridiculous.
PrinceKropotkin··on Activists turn facial recognition tools against the police
Why did they do that? Presumably they're worried about pissing off the state/were leaned on but the linked article doesn't say.
PrinceKropotkin··on Media Owned by Wealthy Are Quick to Tell You Wealth Taxes Are a Bad Idea
Federal taxes have been going down my whole life (born 1990 in the US). What era/region are you referring to where taxes go up?
PrinceKropotkin··on Former Google CEO Calls Social Networks ‘Amplifiers for Idiots’
Regardless of whether or not "amplifying vox populi" is your preferred answer, it's the future of media. Why would I ever trust Wolf Blitzer over my favorite professor, or my favorite historian? Why would I look to the NyTimes when they don't cover the stories I consider important? Why would I trust the editorial staff at all given what I find in the opinion section?

This is not to say that popular media outlets are lying or have an explicit agenda, it's just virtually impossible to find one that seems to reflect a world coherent with the one you live in.

PrinceKropotkin··on United States vs. Google
> "Competition is only a click away"

I must be crazy! The competition (bing, duckduckgo) is exactly the same service down to the same shitty interface minus the autoscraped crap on the side. If there's competition it's not on the internet I have access to. Where's the search engine I actually transact to use? That's what real competition would look like.

PrinceKropotkin··on Why Was She So Hated?: How Marie Antoinette Tried to Save the Monarchy
I'm a little taken aback by the title. Marie Antoinette is the very image of dislikable aristocracy. Have folks these days really forgotten why she was so hated? She clearly was unable to perform in the role of arguing for the french people. She was utterly divorced from their problems due to wealth disparity. If people have forgotten why she was hated, we are due for some truly violent times. This is not good: the US ruling class is the very image of pre-revolution wealth disparity, complete with Pelosi eating ice cream out of her two massive fridges during a pandemic. I'm no particular critic of Pelosi in particular, but my jaw hit the floor when I saw her make that video. How can you be this oblivious about how you come off to people?

The book itself is excellent, btw, this is purely a question for the editor of "nybooks". Editor: stop pretending that people forgot why the rich are hated when the poor are starving. We aren't at the place where impoverished women take the streets demanding better prices for bread but we aren't far from it either.

PrinceKropotkin··on A brief introduction to BEAM
What kind of static analysis is available for BEAM programs?
