Prickle··on Framework 13 AMD 7040 Series: A Developer's First Impressions
Me.

Ironically enough, my Dell laptop arrived without a working wifi card. They had a bios update at some point which made it less crap, but I had to replace it after the nth time where it seemingly just randomly turned itself off /hard crashed.

Now that I think of it, I must have some really bad luck. Every single laptop I have owned, has has a wifi issue at some point.

Prickle··on Harvard student groups issued anti-Israel statement, CEOs want them blacklisted
> That's not true. There are over 10,000 wells in Gaza. Hamas controls who is allowed to dig wells in Gaza [0] – Israel lacks effective control over the territory of Gaza so has no ability to stop anyone from digging a well there.

False. All water in the Gaza strip, is explicitly controlled by the Israeli state. Specifically, this stems from the fact that the construction of wells requires a permit from Israel. More specifically, anything constructed without a specific, israeli approved permit, is demolished. This applies to both the WestBank and Gaza. > true that Israel has a negative impact on Gaza's fishing industry – through limiting how far out to sea Gazans are permitted to fish,

Apparently I mistook the no-fishing zone along the coast as a complete ban. That is definitely my mistake.

> gaza was both occupied by egypt and fenced off by egypt, unlike joran that annexed west bank. israel brought to gaza electricity, phones, sewage systems. built hospitals and schools. "global trends" do not make things happen. people make things happen

Yea no. That is actually just not relevant. Once again, this is a global trend! Massive infrastructure projects, massive new investments in the economy. Post war economic miracle.

Global trends are literally set by people. Literacy rates were increasing rapidly during that time. Medical technologies saw massive investment and growth due to the experience of, and aftermath of a global war.

> so, after Hamas massacred PA authority/PLO people in gaza (you know, throwing people from buildings, drugging them behind cars) in 2007, PA in west bank spends considerable efforts to eradicate hamas from west bank. Hamas is mortal enemy of PA in west bank. PA in west bank has deep security cooperation with Israel in order to deal hamas.

This is literally my point! Israel can, and has that ability to fight Hamas in the west bank!

And now because Gaza is a convenient political tool, the PA have started losing votes to Hamas in recent elections in the west bank!

None of that would happen, were it not for keeping Gaza as a literal open air prison!

Your view is literally the opposite of reality.

> Good Life => No reason to join radical terrorist group => Hamas weakens.

Prickle··on NASA finds water and organics in Bennu asteroid sample
Vice versa actually.

The reputation and/or background of a source should not affect the criticism of the content.

If the content of an article or video is good, the reputation of the source is not that relevant.

Vice versa again, a outlet having a good reputation should not prevent you from judging a bad article as bad.

Prickle··on Harvard student groups issued anti-Israel statement, CEOs want them blacklisted
The amount of revisionist history here is a bit absurd.

Let us make it clear. Israel outright denied multiple partition maps. Israel had the advantage of being on the side designing the UN maps too. It is incredibly well known that most of the maps proposed by Israel included Jerusalem as exclusively Israeli territory.

They also allocated more land to Israel than the Arabs, despite having less than half the population.

On average, 60% of the land, going to less than 30% of the population. No fucking shit the Arabs were having none of it.

So no, that's a completely stupid and nonsense argument.

Egypt closing the border? You forgot the time period. Everyone has closed borders. Egypt was one of them. And either way, this is irrelevant. Israel kicked out Palestinians, not Egypt.

Further more, you claim the increase in education is some sort of Israeli achievement. It is not.

It is literally the global trend in literacy throughout at the time. You could literally say the same thing about Japan, China, India.

Finally, Gaza itself.

Look at the west bank. Do you see hamas attacking from there? No. It is from Lebanon and Gaza. Why? Because Palestinians can actually have a life in the WestBank.

Because Gaza is a literal 1:1 open air prison.

Digging wells is illegal, all Gaza water is owned by Israel Fishing is illegal. All water rights are owned by Israel. (Not a joke)

Exports are almost completely illegal. Imports as well.

Business is mostly illegal, primarily to "stop hamas from acquiring funds".

Immigration is also illegal. You are only allowed to leave with a work visa. Good luck getting one.

Education is practically non existent. Ironically, Israel has literally demolished multiple schools in Gaza.

People born in Gaza basically cannot leave. So you have a poorly educated, frustrated population.

Tons of spare time, nothing they can do. And then along comes Hamas. "Hey kiddo, wanna see the outside world?"

Prickle··on Harvard student groups issued anti-Israel statement, CEOs want them blacklisted
I want to seriously question what you mean by "History".

The history I understand places blame on the British Empire and the neo Israeli State.

My understanding of this situation is that terrorism is initiated by Islamic jihadists. The environment that allows those jihadists to thrive is created by Israel.

The Gaza strip, is the poster child of how to create an adversarial environment that breeds terrorism.

Prickle··on Harvard student groups issued anti-Israel statement, CEOs want them blacklisted
I despise this kind of backlash.

Everyone always says "Free speech, but not speech without consequence". But this kind of reactionary consequences are precisely why it's an issue.

You don't actually have free speech, if the consequences of free speech are so great, that it becomes career suicide.

Not allowed to speak against crowd, and all that entails.

Prickle··on NASA finds water and organics in Bennu asteroid sample
This would fall under the logical fallacy of attacking the character of the outlet, and not actually criticising the content.

The content of the video that was linked, can be described as "in theory the universe was xyz so abc could have been a thing". Also known as non-serious entertainment.

Your link is irrelevant in this conversation, as the criticisms involved are entirely political. If the linked video was related to renewables, nuclear energy, etc then it might have been relevant.

Prickle··on The largest DDoS attack to date, peaking above 398M rps
Ok, that is somewhat fair.

My personal want / solution would simply be "everything gets an IPV6, and IPV4 gets deprecated. Everything using IPV4 gets an algorithm slapped on top to covert it into IPV6.

Dynamic ips become a thing of the past.

But I realize that is significantly easier said than done. (Makes Minecraft servers easier to setup though)

Prickle··on The largest DDoS attack to date, peaking above 398M rps
I've been on the receiving end of "Your" (dynamic) "IP has been blocked."

I would greatly prefer not having my semi-randomized IP blocked because someone used it maliciously a year ago.

Prickle··on Extreme parkour with legged robots
> Drones and robots made attacks easier, did that help national security?

Large flying drones make patrolling a border easier. You don't have to worry about the pilot's fatigue level. Only fuel/battery.

The war in Ukraine clearly shows that smaller drones also help in attacking and defending. Attacking, by dropping bombs or spotting targets. And defending, via spotting incoming enemy forces; spotting enemy artillery that is shooting at you, etc

Prickle··on Extreme parkour with legged robots
How does it not?

Consider terrain such as the mountain ranges along the side of California. Or the entirety of Japan.

Wheeled and tracked vehicles generally have problems in that terrain.

Legged robots don't. Suddenly your troops intended to operate in mountainous terrain have a reliable robot donkey to use as a packmule.

Many countries (US, Germany, France, Italy, etc) still use horses and donkeys for transport in bad terrain.

Prickle··on Warp drive's best hope dies, as antimatter falls down
Yes actually, it would be. It would also depend on whether you have fine control over the size of the spacetime pothole. It is also possible that the larger nearby gravity well would pull on the pothole.

I like to think that concepts such as "you must be at the edge of the solar system to initiate faster than light travel" or "cannot initiate faster than light within the gravity well of planet" originate here.

I have nothing to backup that theory of course.

As for space pollution, I never really thought of that. But considering some of our observation tools observe 'gravitational waves'? I could imagine another "starlink and light pollution is getting in the way of space observation" situation.

Prickle··on Warp drive's best hope dies, as antimatter falls down
There are generally speaking, two interpretations in scifi. I don't really understand the physics, so apologies if I get it wrong.

1. Better known as the "Alcubierre Drive", Compress space infront of you and expand the space behind. Essentially inching forward like the inch worm. (If we presume that visually, the inch worm stays in the hunched position and slides forward because our eyes cannot see it's movement) Doing this smoothly in theory lets you accelerate and decelerate infinitely.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcubierre_drive

2. Warp space infront of you to create gravity, and pull you forward. Essentially, you make a pot hole in space time, and "fall" into it. This is basically the same Alcubierre Drive, but without the expansion at the rear.

2.1: One version holds that pothole at a specified distance infront of the ship.

2.2: The other version creates the pothole, then removes it before you reach it.

Prickle··on I quit my high paying tech job at Meta after having panic attacks
So this article is one of those pyramid scheme articles. Where they essentially say "quit your job, and just speculate on the housing market instead".

What they don't tell you is that you are buying from the people who commissioned this article.

> So we started with house hacking, a lower-cost way of getting into real estate. We planned to buy a house, live in a part of it, and rent out the rest of the home to someone else.

> We bought a five-bedroom home in Redding, California, four hours north of San Francisco. While we lived in a 252-square-foot detached guest house in the backyard, our main house was bringing in about $8,000 a month in revenue on Airbnb.

> We were basically living for free and getting paid money every month. We grew confident in real estate and saw its potential. I even set a personal goal to quit Meta once I was making $10,000 a month from real estate.

> We doubled down and bought two more properties in 2021, and by the end of that year, I reached that $10,000-a-month milestone. I then bought two more homes in 2022 and one more in 2023.

Literally an advertisement for AirBNB

Of course, if you can do it, it's a good option. But according to what I hear around me, you are just as likely going to be feed for the experienced sharks as maintenance costs and bad tenant choices eat you up.

Prickle··on Delta finds fake jet aircraft engine parts with forged airworthiness documents
Not really no. Lion Air 610, and the 23 other near miss incident reports all point to a fundamental design flaw in the Boeing 737 Max8

Primarily, that there is only one angle of attack sensor that feeds the MCAS system.

There are two sensors, but the system just doesn't compare them. It just takes the result from one sensor and uses it regardless of errors.

For comparison, Airbus A320 actually has a very similar system. But it is fed by 3 different angle of attack sensors. All 3 sensors are constantly compared against each other.

I almost forgot! Below quotes are straight from Wikipedia MCAS page.

> Boeing's own internal design guidelines related to the 737 MAX's development stated that the system should "not have any objectionable interaction with the piloting of the airplane" and "not interfere with dive recovery".[68] The operation of MCAS violated those.[69]

> the specific failure modes that could lead to unintended MCAS activation (such as an erroneous high AOA input to the MCAS) were not simulated as part of these functional hazard assessment validation tests. As a result, additional flight deck effects (such as IAS DISAGREE and ALT DISAGREE alerts and stick shaker activation) resulting from the same underlying failure (for example, erroneous AOA) were not simulated and were not in the stabilizer trim safety assessment report reviewed by the NTSB."

Prickle··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
The major difference here is that Amazon has major market power as an online mall.

Like with the sears example, large 'mall' like organizations do outright steal designs and stonewall the original copyright holder.

A random housebrand does not have access to Amazon's statistics, logistics or reach. Amazon is looking at stats that they hide from their providers, to choose who to copy, then out-price the original seller. (Due to inhouse logistics)

They are not even remotely the same thing.

Prickle··on Delta finds fake jet aircraft engine parts with forged airworthiness documents
Going to link an aircrash investigation that found fake aircraft parts as the cause.

May help with getting some extra context on where and how these things get into the system.

Prickle··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
Your "What about Kirkland" -ism is irrelevant.

A big company can stall a copyright lawsuit for as long as it wants. Small companies cannot win against a large compamy like Amazon in court.

https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1986-07-14-fi-19337-...

Especially when they can just twist the court system however they wish.

Small victories like the chain wrench lawsuit against Sears happen. But they are rare.

https://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-bionic-wrench-sea...

Your response shows that you did no read the article. They specifically show cases where Amazon copied sizes:

> Among the victims of the strategy: a popular shirt brand in India, John Miller, which is owned by a company whose chief executive is Kishore Biyani, known as the country's "retail king." Amazon decided to "follow the measurements of" John Miller shirts down to the neck circumference and sleeve length, the document states.

Prickle··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
Fortunately or unfortunately, that is something that is easy to research. ie: Amazon Basics

https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/amazon-copied-produ...

> thousands of pages of internal Amazon documents examined by Reuters – including emails, strategy papers and business plans – show the company ran a systematic campaign of creating knockoffs and manipulating search results to boost its own product lines in India, one of the company's largest growth markets.

Prickle··on Crusty Windows
I tried!

I really, really tried!

They won't sell it to peasants like me. They refuse to even give a quote. Businesses only, and even then you must be a big business. Small/Medium need not apply.

The company I work for uses a really hacky way to "break" windows updates instead. Then "authorises" specific packages. I thought it was a group policy, but whatever this is a giant mess.

Prickle··on Apple will no longer fix the $17,000 gold Apple Watch
That would depend.

As a buyer, you would need to decide for yourself whether you want a guaranteed working firearm or not.

And in many cases, the owner will test fire the firearm before putting it on auction anyway.

Old Martini Henri rifles, dueling pistols, even muskets in some cases.

Prickle··on Humane, a startup full of ex-iPhone talent, trying to make phones obsolete
I seem to remember a product like this that turned out to be mostly vapour ware.

It was a watch that would project onto your arm.

https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2018/4/27/17289572/l...

Edit: Huh, I think this is their product actually: https://techcrunch.com/2023/09/30/humanes-ai-pin-debuts-on-t...

So it's a pin on your chest that will project into your hand.

This sounds almost identical to what the watch tried to do... except exponentially more difficult.

1. It needs to be significantly lighter weight

2. It needs to project significantly further away.

3. It needs to identify the hand only when it is "ready" to be projected on, then aim at it.

This alone would present major issues I think.

Prickle··on Bing Chat responses infiltrated by ads pushing malware
I have an example where I used the Phind model and GPT4 in a mix. The goal was to get multiple iterations of the same code, written in different ways that I could iterate on.

I had this really annoying requirement to get multiple incompatible status codes, and output them in a consolidated human legible way.

So pretend I am using MSSQL, and I have 3 status code tables.

The status code integers are all slightly different. NEW is always 1, but "Completed" could be 5, 7 or 21 depending on table.

The actual "text" is an integer that can be linked to a Text table via the ID and Language name. But, due to the nuances being slightly different, each version can have a different ID. I can't just use DISTINCT on the text ids.

This is even more true when slight differences like "Complete" and "Completed" exist.

So I need to use UNION, to 'combine' multiple unrelated status code tables.

Then I need to get the language text, and SELECT DISTINCT (or something similar) per language.

Then that needs to be outputted as a drop down for the user.

Then, I have to use that as a other, separate input for another SQL query.

To say "using fast, slightly inaccurate GPT code" was faster than doing it by hand would be an understatement.

It gave me about 15 iterations, where about 6 sort of worked. Then I figures it out myself from there.

Prickle··on Snowden leak: Cavium networking hardware may contain NSA backdoor
As someone who's company just suffered this exact issue, all I can say is yes.

We just got penetrated by two attackers in the last 40 days.

Prickle··on Googlers told to avoid words like ‘share’ and ‘bundle,’ US says
That claim seems incredibly unfair.

That is just regular corporate espionage. The reverse is possible as well.

Prickle··on Ask HN: What is your policy regarding smartphones for your children?
I didn't realize any of this existed. I play Minecraft Java edition, which is the original version, and has none of these things.

Now I know to be a bit more careful when recommending the game without specifying huh.

Prickle··on Ask HN: What is your policy regarding smartphones for your children?
Minecraft is definitely without a doubt, not any of those things. It is first and foremost a single player game that can be modded extensively. I have found that multiplayer always comes second at best.

Servers can be bad, but that is entirely optional. Not even close to Roblox or Fortnite.

This is coming from a person that basically grew up with it from the Alpha stage.

Prickle··on Ask HN: Did you leave Reddit or did it creep back in?
I'm expecting myself to use it frequently during the Tokyo Game Show to discuss stuff. But that would heavily depend on the content of the Tokyo Game Show. So we will have to see.

Last time, I was one of the main people translating the content into English. If there's a Kojima walk through of deathstranding2, that will be #1 on my todo from a gaming nerd standpoint.
