Prickle··on I think the military commissary's freezers were hacked
Oh I wish that was possible.

Fact is if the customer wants to put their worksite management on AWS, you inevitably expose the OPC server and/or PLC to a Intranet. This is then inevitably connected to the internet in some way. The customer may or may not put barriers between them, but that's not up to us to decide.

This becomes especially a problem if they have multiple sites across a country or countries.

We have a customer that runs a factory on god forsaken WIFI, then dares to complain about a bad connection to said equipment. Thankfully, they have their own internal IT department.

Prickle··on Steam Machine
No. That restriction has been gone for a few years now.

I can run rimworld and quasimorph via steam at the same time, as an example.

Prickle··on South Korea's President says US investment demands would spark financial crisis
He singlehandedly annihilated the US soybean market.

That's not a good thing. Lots of farmers going bankrupt now.

Well, having the paper agreement certainly helped last time. (A month ago.)

There's also a Language barrier. So making sure there is a written agreement ensures that both sides understand what was agreed upon.

I went and got some articles mentioning this mess.

Prickle··on South Korea's President says US investment demands would spark financial crisis
Paper trail stuff. But more importantly, when the first set of executive orders reducing tariffs rates went out, it conveniently mentioned Japanese investments but did not include tariff reductions for Japanese goods.

So the Japanese government pointed at the written agreement and told the trump admin to get their shit together. A few days later, the tariff reductions on Japanese goods was hastily added on.

Prickle··on The North Korean fake IT worker problem is ubiquitous
They definitely can. For my first 3 months it was obligatory to show up to the office. The office was basically a apartment room, and very small. But it got the job done.
Prickle··on I scanned all of GitHub's "oops commits" for leaked secrets
I am guilty of this one. I was 30 minutes from a presentation, and couldn't figure out why my code couldn't get the key from the hosting service.

So I just hard coded the key. The key was rotated after the presentation.

Does not look very good on a repo.

Prickle··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
Just the short demo videos on their website.

Their example of the music app. You have a translucent bar showing the currently playing music app.

It gets harder to read when it overlaps with the background music album covers. I can very easily see a situation where you need to scroll to an empty bit, just to be able to read what it is actually playing.

Now, imagine you have a visual impairment. It's already hard to read with mostly normal eyes. This will be impossible for anyone with bad vision, probably even worse if colorblind.

It is genuinely unreadable, and a mess visually.

Prickle··on Starship Flight 9 booster explodes on impact [video]
Oh, so it's one of the two boosters they caught with the chopsticks?

Dang, that's actually quite insane.

Shame that block2/block3 starship is such a mess.

Prickle··on Starship Flight 9 booster explodes on impact [video]
Yea, the super heavy booster was flying a refurbished engine from a previous super heavy flight.

Explosion was probably expected.

Prickle··on Tesla drives into Wile E. Coyote fake road wall in camera vs. Lidar test
No car advertising lane keeping or emergency breaking, would punch through that wall. Regardless of whether it's a simple poster, or a Styrofoam wall.

Because emergency breaking should just work, regardless of mode.

Prickle··on Tesla drives into Wile E. Coyote fake road wall in camera vs. Lidar test
That should also be entirely irrelevant.

It's emergency breaking. There shouldn't be differing results on whether you paid an extra $8000 usd or not.

FSD does not advertise better emergency breaking as a feature. (Last I checked anyway.)

Prickle··on Tesla drives into Wile E. Coyote fake road wall in camera vs. Lidar test
He's testing emergency breaking. It's not some pay-to-receive service surely? It should be always on, regardless of Autopilot or FSD.

It has come as a default feature with many new vehicles in the modern age.

Are you trying to say that Tesla's FSD emergency breaking and AutoPilot emergency breaking are different? It's emergency breaking. None of that should matter.

And if it does matter, we are dealing with the possibility that Tesla is selling a deliberately worse product at a lower price point, in exchange for risking the lives of drivers and passengers.

There really is no meaningful difference here, because the result SHOULD be the same, regardless of what feature was enabled or disabled.

At the time of writing this comment, Launch is T+2 Minutes. Tower booster catch is Go.

Prickle··on Brother accused of locking down third-party printer ink cartridges
I can confirm this from my own, anecdotal experience. My current brother printer no longer recognizes refilled ink cartridges and some third party cartridges.
Prickle··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
My understanding is that negative press of apple gets you blacklisted from media events and early review devices.

The advertising deals with apple are not that lucrative, iirc.

So bad reviews are avoided to ensure the media gets the early review clicks.

Prickle··on Framework's first desktop is a strange–but unique–mini ITX gaming PC
In the case of Japan, it's likely an issue with Japanese regulations.

We have a very strict radio law that applies to anything that can produce radio or em waves

That includes motherboards, since they can technically emit on those frequencies.

From what I have seen, the framework laptop motherboards appear to abide by that law. However, I assume it's just expensive to figure out in the first place.

Prickle··on LibreOffice still kicking at 40, now with browser tricks and real-time collab
Yup, this is a constant trouble maker for us.

Customer exports a csv file, then verifies the contents in excel. They never realize that excel modified some of the data, and pass it on to us.

Just, constantly! (I use notepad++ for CSV files however)

Prickle··on Japan can be a science heavyweight once more if it rethinks funding
That's interesting.

Japanese discussions I have had, and articles in Japanese seem to say the opposite. That Japan needs to invest more; because many talented Japanese researchers are emigrating to the USA or China.

The main topic that comes up is that both China and the USA provide better wages, as well as greater funding for projects overall.

But I'm just a local, and certainly not a researcher. Thanks for your POV!

Prickle··on New Tesla Model Y
Ok, but the iphone isn't remotely the same situation, work load, stress or risk; compared to a car.

I relatively consistently mistype on a touch screen keyboard. That's not too much of an issue.

However, me taking my eyes off the road in a car, (stationary or not) to fiddle with a touchscreen is a major risk. I personally just enjoy the fine tuning I can do with physical controls. And the best part, I don't need to look at the control to use it. With a touch screen, sight is a requirement.

Prickle··on How I use LLMs as a staff engineer
The main issue I am having here, is that I can see a measurable drop in my ability to write code because of LLM usage.

I need to avoid LLM use to ensure my coding ability stays up to par.

Prickle··on New Tesla Model Y
The main thing with physical buttons, is that you don't need to look at them. You can feel for the control without taking your eyes off the road. Can't do that with a Tesla. The touch screen doesn't give you any tactile signals.
Prickle··on New Tesla Model Y
As much as I like the crash safety results of a Tesla, at the end of the day I can't help but dislike the ergonomics of Tesla's cars.

The touch screen being the major control method for many things including the act of putting the car in reverse, is just bad.

The handles being electric, instead of mechanical. (An issue with many modern electric cars actually)

The wheel, not being a wheel. (Although I like that they tried something new)

Prickle··on Starship Flight 7
The reason is pretty simple. The technology you are using right now, was created with knowledge that was obtained in orbit.

If you use GPS, you are inherently reliant on satellites, delivered with rockets.

Some of our resource shortages can be covered via resource acquisition in space.

Pushing the space frontier, is far more interesting and important, than mobile phone screen size, or fidelity.

It opens an entire new area to the sciences.

Also big explody tube warms the cockles of my heart.

Prickle··on Passkey technology is elegant, but it's most definitely not usable security
https://9to5google.com/2019/11/09/google-account-bans-youtub...

This article provides a good summary of events.

The short of it, is that a YouTuber was Livestreaming.

He asks viewers to spam certain emojis to select what path the streamer should take.

Google's automated system detected the spam, and banned google accounts.

Prickle··on Passkey technology is elegant, but it's most definitely not usable security
https://9to5google.com/2019/11/09/google-account-bans-youtub...

It definitely was not fake. I saw plenty of uproar on the day it happened.

I remember a number of tech channels also started to post videos on how to de-google right after that.

Prickle··on Microsoft Confirms Password Deletion for 1B Users
Except, you can't sync the iphone's passkey with non apple products. And it's still tied to your apple ID, which uses a password. This in theory, defeats part of the point. (It's definitely better than the alternative though)

For android, the passkey is clone-able iirc, but again, it's an expensive smart device.

So now I am expected to have at a minimum, two use-able smart phones, per family member. Iphone? Frankly, fuck that shit. Too expensive.

Android, I can manage it. But doing that for all family members is not financially viable.

Also I do use a password manager and an encrypted text file. (Not smart, I know. The file is basically a backup)

But I really cannot expect people like my mother to understand how to set up a passkey. Much less, how to setup multiple for the off chance one is lost. Add onto the fact that Yubikey does not support twins, and many services do not support multiple passkeys.

In terms of computer literacy, using my mother as a baseline (Age:Mid50s) the current passkey system is non-viable.

Prickle··on Microsoft Confirms Password Deletion for 1B Users
Right, but unlike a passkey, my password doesn't discriminate based on the device I use.

If my phone explodes like a Samsung surprise, and my laptop turns into a spicy pillow;

I can in the worst case scenario, still log in via the local library PC.

I could borrow a device from a friend, or buy a second hand Thinkpad and use that.

That is to my knowledge, not possible with a passkey device.

Prickle··on Microsoft Confirms Password Deletion for 1B Users
It absolutely is a Valid question. At the end of the day, the problem with passkeys Is that they are explicitly negatives for common people.

Have a broken phone camera? Cannot scan qr codes.

Lost the phone? Cannot log into vital modern day accounts like email.

Your house burned down, and the passkey device with it? Say goodbye to literally everything.

Homeless (temporary or otherwise) persons, random local government sweep just trashes everything you own. Bye bye to the passkey again.
