PretzelFisch··on Git, JSON and Markdown walk into bar
Comments are not hard to parse. It was a strong opinion by Douglas Crockford, that they would be abused and therefore he omitted them.
PretzelFisch··on Benefits of choosing email over messaging
you just use a shared inbox for the team
PretzelFisch··on What happens when housing prices go down?
Why would the builder want to build enough to let prices drop? They seem to play a lot of games to give buyers incentives that do not lower the sales price.
PretzelFisch··on FogBugz new owners attempting to auto-upgrade all free plans to paid
It works for us its fine. After this stunt however I'll be pushing to migrate to jira like the rest of the company
PretzelFisch··on Built-in container support for the .NET SDK
I also see the big call out to cases where the dockerfile and project are not in the same directory, This looks like a more straight forward improvement.
PretzelFisch··on Hiring Developers: How to avoid the best
Well then you get system design and that is becoming the new racket. I don't know what FANG is going to do long term because the quality of experianced enginieers with the time to play a game of "LeetCode and System design" can not be very high. At some point I would assume they need to make things simple and teach dedicated resources to interview.
PretzelFisch··on Tesseract.js – A Javascript port of the Tesseract OCR engine
what would you suggest to use instead?
PretzelFisch··on Use Spreadsheets Everywhere
Spreadsheets are good for one thing but they are the handy hammer that seems to work for many other things. I would love to see an open and extensable table/matrix program that would surplant the spreadsheet applications.
PretzelFisch··on Safari 15 on Mac OS, a user interface mess
can you search your book marks? And their content? I need that.
PretzelFisch··on Chrome testing RSS-powered ‘Follow’ button
Is this going to be a true client side RSS that talks to all 5k of websites I follow or a service provided by Google that polls for new content? I would be fasinated to see what telemetry/buisness objective has them moving back in this direction.
PretzelFisch··on YouTube TV removed from Roku channel store amid Google contract dispute
I don't see this. I got the new Roku 4k there is a setting to turn off the home screen ad. There was no push to update my subscription. Now the only time I might need a credit card is for some pay for play screen saver or channel. I still feel Roku is the go to stand alone service that works with all the video/audio streamers.
PretzelFisch··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
At the end of the day if my buisness is hosting something the market does not like, my buisness will suffer. It becomes harder to retain and attract new customers and grow my buisness and interfers with my marketing messaging. We live in a capitalistic society this is how the free market works.
PretzelFisch··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
What is your definition of Free speach? In america we have a fredom of speach to protect the people from the government. Not to protect the government from the people. As a buisness owner i may refuse some one/entitiy service, it is how the free market works.
PretzelFisch··on Frontpage: The Good, Bad and Ugly
Did you look at dreamweaver how does it compaire?
PretzelFisch··on Notepad++ 7.9.1 – pour Samuel Paty
Notepad++, has a platform to communicate their views. Does this us bother you? Would you in uninstall the product because their message is in opposition of your beliefs? This reminds me of tech advocates with blogs and twitter were followers get very upset when the content creator steps out of an imagined content subject matter agreement.
PretzelFisch··on Update to Git changes the default of init.defaultBranch to main
If the name change builds a larger, diverse, empathetic community. What have you or I lost?
PretzelFisch··on Firefox 83 introduces HTTPS-Only Mode
My perspective is this is my home network and this application is infringing on my freedom. I should have the right to monitor my network and my traffic. An application is a guest in my house/computer it does not set the rules.
PretzelFisch··on What distinguishes great software engineers? (2019) [pdf]
watch engineering disasters or extreme engineering and you will find a discipline that has failed and learned from mistakes for hundreds of years.
PretzelFisch··on BetterExplained: Clear, intuitive lessons about mathematics
you can book mark the comment link, or us HN and favorite the comment.
PretzelFisch··on DoorDash S-1
The question is, does the decrease in marketing spend increase or decrease the los.
PretzelFisch··on .NET 5.0
One day I would really like to see the ability to have C#, F# and other languages all in the same project.
PretzelFisch··on Build your own professional-grade audio amp on the sort-of cheap (2018)
For a few dollars more there is Nelson Pass's(firstwatt) Do-It-Yourself amp camp. Very nice analog amp. https://diyaudiostore.com/products/amp-camp-amp-kit?variant=...
PretzelFisch··on We are building a CLI first PaaS without a web frontend
If you want adoption CLI only is a not a great choice. 90% of the developers and IT staff I work with are GUI only. A CLI only also means you need great documentation, still people won't read it and constantly ask for a GUI for simple things. Finally for those pointy hair bosses a CLI only service is hard to sign a check for, since they can't really "see it" even if you send a great invoice.
PretzelFisch··on Chrome unlikely to support XPath 3.1
XML is far from dead ask most enterprise companies. XPath in particulare can be very useful in finding nodes in an HTML tree.
PretzelFisch··on Choosing the Management Track
>"Would you take a job with no pay increase."

Same statement can be made for every career step. If your pay did not change, would you do the work of E6 at an E3 wage? If I am moving to a position where I deliver more value to the company, then I should be paid accordingly. We need to move off this work for free trope.

PretzelFisch··on Lessons learned from onboarding emails with no HTML styling
If I buy a product it is not usefull to me. If I add a user in my org they are golden when done right. It becomes one less thing i need to demo and train a new hire right now before they can be productive.
PretzelFisch··on The case for comments in code
I like that idea, I have always felt the TODO is something I add while working on a function/feature so I don't forget the edge case. I have never cared for a TODO representing a work item. Same with a code base littered with comments about fixing bug ###. With out the bug and source control diff how do I know what was part of the fix and when or how it has changed over time via other bug fixes and feature updates.
PretzelFisch··on Blogging on Next.js: Generating static index pages
What I wonder is why static, I come from blogging with dos blog( untile godaddy broke it). And while I never understood the use of plugins like silverlight or adobe I don't really see the harm in using a native js framework to pull the artical contents from the server and update the DOM over pulling and retemplatizing the whole html page. Am I missing something or is static more of a mind set gained from dealing with sites that need to draw the first render faster and handle larger scale in a day then my little old blog will see in a life time?
PretzelFisch··on What is the value of browser diversity?
It may no longer be the case but didn't chromium start as a webkit fork? would Firefox being another Webkit fork be as usefull as a fully seperate implemntation of the standards?
PretzelFisch··on Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com
It's odd I search on GoDaddy every other day and never had this happen. I wonder how they decide you fit the buy profile.
