PreachSoup··on Urban renewal left the U.S. too scared to build
> social prestige they have from living somewhere fancy and they want to keep the poors away from their home.

Value doesn't only mean monetary value. Social prestige is one of the values too. And sometimes they are transferable. The invisible hand is not just about the literal money

PreachSoup··on Urban renewal left the U.S. too scared to build
> gets hijacked by wealthy people to stop things like needed housing from going into their neighborhood.

Everything for inducing the demand and reducing the supply. The invisible hand of extracting values at all cost.

PreachSoup··on Brain Uses Quantum Effects, New Study Finds [video]
I think it's just most people don't really understand physics. If they get the concept of emergent effects, complexity and how free will vs no free will are basically indistinguishable to the humans, I doubt they would still agree with the same conclusion.
PreachSoup··on The Rise of the Forever Renter Class
> The collective/societal solution is that we need to massively increase the density of these cities and improve their infrastructure, but that will in many places require going to war against the NIMBY obstructionists.

The Tokyo solution which we should all follow. It's the only way out of this mess

PreachSoup··on Apple cuts Vision Pro shipments as demand falls 'sharply beyond expectations'
I am amazed that they even have the expectations in the first place

The competition is inevitable. It comes from everywhere
PreachSoup··on Tesla stock drops 29% in first quarter as global dominance wanes
We were talking about Tesla's profit margin and evaluation in the thread. Not sure if you replied to the wrong post
PreachSoup··on Tesla stock drops 29% in first quarter as global dominance wanes
It's just a matter of time. China is making ev like android phones. Other countries are also catching up. The high profit margin of Tesla cannot last forever
PreachSoup··on Thoughts on Vision Pro
Heard the same from the friends working there, that seems to be the case. Apple is much more product and design focused on the other hand
PreachSoup··on Apple says it spent three years trying to bring Apple Watch to Android
Best shot yourself in the foot argument so far. Sony Entertainment is actually bringing the controller and the games to pc. The controller's unique features are also actually usable
PreachSoup··on House passes bill to force TikTok sale from Chinese owner or ban the app
Yep. Tesla is actually the outlier here where China gave them the special treatment.

Now China has their own formidable EVs now. Would China say gave us shares or f** off to Tesla?

PreachSoup··on Japan to revise official romanization rules for first time in 70 years
> If you want to see the opposite approach, look at China and Pinyin. It’s made pronunciation of Chinese in English and elsewhere less intuitive. In order to pronounce Chinese words properly you need to learn Pinyin and its phonetic rules. As a result, many Chinese people take on Westernized names to avoid the inevitable butchering, which is a bit of a shame.

Taiwanese romanization is way better. It's much closer to English and more readable

PreachSoup··on Apple terminates Epic Games developer account, calling it a 'threat' to iOS
But the point is always about the capability. I am using Android because ios is lacking the things I want. For example, granular volume control ( even the lowest volume on iphone is still too high for me sometimes), firefox
PreachSoup··on Apple terminates Epic Games developer account, calling it a 'threat' to iOS
Android's store management is not different from windows. You can completely ignore it/install your own store/install your own apk. Not sure why people keep bring it up in Apple's case.

I am still waiting for Apple to let me install the real Firefox

PreachSoup··on She was harassed at a tech conference. Now other women are sharing MeToo moments
I work in a typical tech company and I was expecting some `tech bro` style harassment. But this event seems indeed far fetched as pointed out by the others
PreachSoup··on She was harassed at a tech conference. Now other women are sharing MeToo moments
A bit confused about the article. Are they harassed/assaulted at the bar? Is it related to the tech conference?
PreachSoup··on You've just inherited a legacy C++ codebase, now what?
On per file level it's just 1 commit. It's not really a big deal
PreachSoup··on Faculty group calls on Yale to make teaching 'distinct from activism'

PreachSoup··on San Francisco reverses 'equitable' ban on middle school algebra
I have met teachers who would go out of their ways in helping the students to learn. My teachers from many years ago were like this. That's the perk of the good ones. But other than that, I agree with you
PreachSoup··on San Francisco reverses 'equitable' ban on middle school algebra
> The poor are stuck with the 'bad' public schools.

Minor suggestion, there are good ones

PreachSoup··on San Francisco reverses 'equitable' ban on middle school algebra
You think the resourceful parents are just gonna sit on their hands and thinking: oops the school is not gonna teach the subjects, we are just gonna to collectively forget out them.

No. They will do whatever they can to make sure their children get the education. They will pay extra. Some will teach their children themselves.

Again, this is regardless of race/religion/lgbtq or anything. It's all hands on deck when it comes to providing for the children.

Sometimes I really doubt whether people are really that naive online? Or are they arguing for the sake of the argument? Tbh, I have never seen anyone in real life doesn't understand the situation and the parents that I am talking about.

PreachSoup··on San Francisco reverses 'equitable' ban on middle school algebra
It only affect the poor. The competitive parents regardless left or right will do whatever they can to get their children ahead. When it comes down to children, all bets are off.

After so many years, I can't say that these kinds of policies aren't malicious.

That's why in our company we have 2 type of engineering effort, core projects impact and improvement. Not all time is spent on the impact. A balancing act is needed
PreachSoup··on Flattr is closing down (2023)
If that's the case, not sure if that's better than ads. I'd rather workout in an ads filled gym for free than paying for la fitness gym membership
PreachSoup··on Leave work slightly unfinished for easier flow the next day
Yep. I think ppls' brains are wired differently naturally.
PreachSoup··on Leave work slightly unfinished for easier flow the next day
Depends. But I would actively put it down and mentally block it and go to sleep when the time comes.
PreachSoup··on Leave work slightly unfinished for easier flow the next day
It really depends. This is just one of the tools that might or might not for you. I think it's more important to know your goal and yourself. In this case, you want to increase your productivity. As long as you can reach your goal, it's good enough.

Personally it doesn't work well for me because I need clean separations from work and be in the prolonged work mode would cause burnout. I have no problem to get started in the next morning with my own routine. It's more important for me to put things down and rest everyday.

On a meta level, experiment with what might work for you and iterate on your own work flow - it's exactly like TDD programming but for yourself
