Phelinofist··on 39th Chaos Communication Congress Videos
It is a very good talk and he makes some really great points, but alas the EU will never have the balls to do this (I'm a EU citizen :'-( )
Phelinofist··on 39th Chaos Communication Congress Videos
The Asahi talk was good, but the video switched waaaayyyyy too often between slide only -> slide + speaker -> stage -> only speaker. Made me kinda uncomfortable.

Yes, that is what I meant - thanks for actually expressing my thoughts better than me.
Phelinofist··on Linux Kernel Rust Code Sees Its First CVE Vulnerability
I know nothing about Rust. But why is unsafe needed? Kinda sounds a lock would make this safe?

... they said. Not against users.

Phelinofist··on Internal RFCs saved us months of wasted work
> This leads to authors having to re-explain their thinking in detail, covering points that they’d omitted for brevity or because they are obvious to those with a good understanding of the problem.

IMHO there should be no gaps like that. If you already thought hard and long about these problems, why not just write all your knowledge down, so other people can benefit from that? Also, this makes your work a lot more accessible to those who came after you. Of course, you have to assume a certain baseline of knowledge. But if you already have a good understanding of the problem, why not formulate that as part of the RFC?

Pretty subject to personal taste. Half of that list is garbage IMHO

Phelinofist··on OpenAI declares 'code red' as Google catches up in AI race
Not quite - I'm German :P

But as a sibling has said, the "super nice question homie" texts are not coming (as much) in Gemini as in ChatGPT (for me). I know that you can tune ChatGPTs persona, but that changed also the answer quality for me for the worse.

Phelinofist··on OpenAI declares 'code red' as Google catches up in AI race
IMHO Gemini surpassed ChatGPT by quite a bit - I switched. Gemini is faster, the thinking mode gives me reliably better answers and it has a more "business like" conversation attitude which is refreshing in comparison to the over-the-top informal ChatGPT default.

Phelinofist··on Denmark's government aims to ban access to social media for children under 15
Germanys ID has the technical means to allow something like that (age verification without disclosing identity), but knowing the German Gov and their absolute stasis something like this will never happen. It is absolutely necessary to do something like this, because social media has a net negative influence on society.

A lot of kids in my daughters class (~7yo's) are consuming brain rot content already. They shout "SIGMA BOY" or "SKIBIDI TOILET" like little retards during lessons. Yeah memes are cool and all, but not at this age.

While at it, ban lootboxes.

Phelinofist··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
My comment was actually tongue in cheek that the newest Python incarnation looks like the 20+ year old thing from Java, i.e. Python finally going in the right direction.
Phelinofist··on China has added forest the size of Texas since 1990
I agree that the EU needs to reform into something stronger, because the different nations of the EU are not really acting in union. However, while I sympathize with some stances of the AfD they are generally pretty anti EU. So I'm not sure I agree that they have a real action plan.
Phelinofist··on China has added forest the size of Texas since 1990
I know it sounds insane but I wish Germany had such a stable government that actually DOES something. For as long as I can remember German govs have been absolute dogshit. Not to say the CN gov hasn't done no wrong. But they are moving with incredible speed in the right direction.
