PhearTheCeal··on One-Ring Phone Scam on the Rise
I recently did a job interview and I'm waiting for a call. So, honestly, I might call back if this happened to me.
PhearTheCeal··on DeepMind to Work Directly With Google’s Search Team
Perhaps his predictions are correct. Or perhaps his predictions are similar to those made by a professional software developer when asked "How long will it take?" and they respond "Oh, about five minutes."

Then it ends up taking days.

PhearTheCeal··on Google to Buy Artificial Intelligence Startup DeepMind for $400M

From the list given, looks like that would be Tox. It's got IPv6 and everything.

PhearTheCeal··on BitTorrent Chat - Private instant messaging via secure, distributed technology
Sure, they haven't polished the GUI to look like the mock-up yet. And they don't quite have video chat, though they are working on it. But what they do already have is what Bittorrent is promising to deliver "soon", and it is actually open-source!
PhearTheCeal··on BitTorrent Chat - Private instant messaging via secure, distributed technology
Sounds similar to already existing Open-Source projects, like Tox[1] (which was discussed on HN a couple months ago[2].)

Questions for both projects still remain though: What sort of metadata can be collected from users of these programs? How can that metadata be used? Are there any security vulnerabilities that have been overlooked?

We are still a ways from having truly secure chat as the mainstream communication medium, but I'm glad Bittorent and others are helping move it in the right direction.

PhearTheCeal··on Why I Play Video Games
Some basic exercise routines would probably have the same beneficial effects and a bunch of added ones as well. You can't replace video games with exercise altogether (2 hours is a pretty long workout), but making it part of your "unwind" routine would benefit you greatly.

Looks like a poorly designed method to avoid SQL injections.
PhearTheCeal··on Ask HN: What do you while the automated tests are running?
I run the tests in a VM so that I can keep working on them while the tests are running.
PhearTheCeal··on Tox: secure messaging for everyone
The app isn't even in alpha stage yet, it was started a month ago.

PhearTheCeal··on “A Dark Room” game open-sourced
I stand corrected. Thank you. I guess I shouldn't assume I understand any document that is complex enough to warrant a preamble.

>9. License Must Not Restrict Other Software The license must not place restrictions on other software that is distributed along with the licensed software. For example, the license must not insist that all other programs distributed on the same medium must be open-source software.

So, under this definition, the GPL isn't an open-source license.

PhearTheCeal··on Statement from Edward Snowden in Moscow
So, I say it's fake because they silently edited things that might alert people to its legitimacy, and because they didn't offer any proof that it is really from him.

Others think it's real because it is on Wikileaks.

I see both sides of the argument, but I'm staying on my side for now.

PhearTheCeal··on Statement from Edward Snowden in Moscow
Maybe we should ask for a photo of him holding a hand-written time-stamp.
PhearTheCeal··on Statement from Edward Snowden in Moscow
A fake statement from Edward Snowden.
PhearTheCeal··on Statement from Edward Snowden in Moscow
So, it's probably fake [statement from Snowden].

EDIT: Why the downvotes? Do you have proof this is real? It seems awfully suspicious to change that when someone notices it and not mention anything.

EDIT2: Clarified what I think is (fully or partially) fake.

In economics, we call this signalling. Employers often have little information about the quality of the employee, so naturally they 'signals' that indicate the applicant is of high quality.

Things such as a college degree and experience are obvious signals, but they are not the only signals. Race and sex play a part as well, assuming that different races/sexes exhibit different behavior on average. This is statistical discrimination[1], not bigotry. In fact, this discrimination is efficient because it lessens the likelihood of choosing a bad employee. This is why men are given more job offers than women- a man is less likely to go on paternal leave or switch to part time because of 'stress'. If this discrimination did not occur, the employees would be of lower quality which hurts productivity.

PhearTheCeal··on What's up with HN?
I think it's a new Javascript framework. I hope it is REST-compliant.
