PedroBatista··on Egg prices vs. Consumer Price Index since 1980
Not every product is the same.

You can't "manufacture" an egg like you do with a car. Entire egg "production" sites need to be shutdown and millions of chickens killed because of some strain of bird flu for example. And you can't just order 5 million egg laying chickens to substitute the old production with a lead time of a few weeks.

PedroBatista··on Egg prices vs. Consumer Price Index since 1980
The only significance I can see is in the amplitude of the fluctuations. Which I intuitively attribute to massive concentration of both production sites and ownership of businesses.
PedroBatista··on Andrej Karpathy – It will take a decade to work through the issues with agents
Following the comments here, yes: AGI is the new Cold Fusion.

However, don't let the bandwagon ( from either side ) cloud your judgment. Even warm fusion or any fusion at all is still very useful and it's here to stay.

This whole AGI and "the future" thing is mostly a VC/Banks and shovel sellers problem. A problem that has become ours too because the ridiculous amounts of money "invested", so even warm fusion is not enough from an investment vs expectations perspective.

They are already playing musical money chairs, unfortunately we already know who's going to pay for all of this "exuberance" in the end.

I hope this whole thing crashes and burns as soon as possible, not because I don't "believe" in AI, but because people have been absolutely stupid about it. The workplace has been unbearable with all this stupidity and amounts of fake "courage" about every single problem and the usual judgment of the value of work and knowledge your run-of-the-mill dipshit manager has now.

PedroBatista··on Metropolis 1998 lets you design every building in an isometric, pixel-art city (2024)
Yes.. but: Don't forget this is a game, and the main mission of a game is to be FUN.
PedroBatista··on Metropolis 1998 lets you design every building in an isometric, pixel-art city (2024)
Are you an investor? did you pre-ordered? Are you his mom?
PedroBatista··on Bots are getting good at mimicking engagement
He idea of "reality" and how things work, even if the idea is "they work bad", is more important than any other argument or reality. That's true at personal level and even truer at any organizational level.
PedroBatista··on Apple Renames 'Apple TV+' to 'Apple TV'
Big Tim has been killing it lately, and by killing it I mean being the Brian Krzanich of Apple.

The jury is still out if Apple TV will ever make a significant profit. Tim had a dream.. an expensive one but Apple was and is swimming in cash and running out of people to sell an iPhone. I get the "being a media & services company" hustle, selling overpriced hardware can only get you that far, but burning so much money on actors and production to get some -> limited <- catalog of good movies and shows, I don't get it. "Media" is actually a very though business.

PedroBatista··on Amazon Is Digitally Erasing Guns from James Bond Posters
I would be OK if they swapped it with a cucumber or a banana.

Why even get mad at this point? It's an "asset" like any other product. They bought the rights. I feel people in general are becoming "rational" actors too, by just ignoring the product if they don't like it.

At the end of the day, yes it's funny and stupid. Who cares? ignore them.

PedroBatista··on The Digital Markets Act: time for a reset
Reset is the right word. Break-up these mega corps that naturally have become extractive to the point they themselves starting to rot. If "break-up" is too strong, call it a "reset".
PedroBatista··on Cloudflare Introduces NET Dollar
Cloudflare is living that mid 00's Google vibe mixed with AWS mind..

No need to be totally cynic to kinda know how this will play out..

PedroBatista··on China is eating the world
While I don't deny China is a big economy with areas where it's leading. This article reads a bit like cheerleading, which is fine. It's just not the whole truth.

Also: >prosperity without freedom, development without democracy, safety without expansive civil liberties.

So did the USSR in many places.

PedroBatista··on The GitHub website is slow on Safari
Is your deployment SaaS or running on your company servers?

Gitlab is anything but light, by default tends to be slow, but surprisingly fast with a good server ( nothing crazy, but big ) and caching.

PedroBatista··on The GitHub website is slow on Safari
The Github website is slow everywhere. It is truly a piece of shit software both in terms of performance but also UX/UI and everything in between.

It's a product of many cooks and their brilliant ideas and KPIs, a social network for devs and code being the most "brilliant" of them all. For day to day dev operations is something so mediocre even Gitlab looks like the golden standard compared to Github.

And no, the problem is not "Rails" or [ insert any other tech BS to deflect the real problems ].

PedroBatista··on Airbus A320 Poised to Overtake Boeing 737 as Most-Delivered Commercial Airliner
Boeing is going nowhere. One of the reasons Boeing’s bad behavior in last couple decades is also the reason they won’t die: The US Government
PedroBatista··on Perplexity offers to buy Google Chrome for $34.5B
I get the feeling this Perplexity guy is a mix of SBF the bitcoin dude with the Palantir guy but actually dreams to be early Elon, or a troll. Maybe another another deep state plant? If we really want to go that road..

Either way, how does Perplexity even envisions to become a stable business? Let alone buying the browser with +80% worldwide share.

PedroBatista··on Clarifying recent headlines on gaming content
It's good to know the mega-corp I have to put enormous amount of trust with my money, can make a post like this without an hint of irony...

Now we are at the "just lie" stage.

PedroBatista··on Friction and Not Being Touched
While the author might be in one end of the spectrum, you might want to acknowledge you are at the other end and I hope it’s temporary because you sound bitter to the point you’re either a teenager or a person hurt by life.
PedroBatista··on XSLT – Native, zero-config build system for the Web
I still have PTSD from XSLT in college.

Recently I need a solution for a problem and what XSLT promises is a big part of the solution, so I'm in an existential and emotional crisis.

PedroBatista··on US Streetlights Are Turning Purple
No, sodium vapor lights offer great performance in terms of contrast and visibility. Especially in bad weather conditions.
PedroBatista··on Ukraine destroys more than 40 military aircraft in drone attack deep in Russia
It would, but these were FPVs and their targets can be precisely chosen at the very moment of the strike.

Also, these are remote airbases where all the strategic bombers are stationed. Fighter jets would not be there in significant numbers if any since they are needed in other bases closer to the front-lines and also some at the borders.

In in of the videos you could see a Mi-8 which was ignored because of it's insignificance compared to the primary targets.

PedroBatista··on Ukraine destroys more than 40 military aircraft in drone attack deep in Russia
Electronics, ATVs and clothing not Strategic nuclear bombers
PedroBatista··on The UI future is colourful and dimensional
There have been rumblings and attempts years prior. Now it only takes another attempt, an industry darling ( it used to be Apple) and a big hype boom on the Internet.

There is one problem tho: flat design is cheap to produce. Not sure if AI is there yet to be capable to produce good enough slop to become an industry trend that sticks.

PedroBatista··on GM's new turbo engine rewrites the rules of torque control-and locks out tuners
Yes, because GMs problem has been too little AI in their engines.

Given the recent past about sensors and reliability I’m adding even more will be great for reliability and cost.

I’m sure this design came from the committee of geniuses who brought us the wet belt.

Rant over. (Sorry)

PedroBatista··on India launches attack on 9 sites in Pakistan and Pakistani Jammu and Kashmir

PedroBatista··on Espressif's ESP32-C5 Is Now in Mass Production
Love it or hate it, CMake is more or less the de facto build system for C/C++

And just like any build system for everything language/stack, there is a small group of hardcore "enthusiasts" who create and push their true build tech to rule them all and then there is the large majority of people who have to deal with it and just want to build the damn thing.

PedroBatista··on Widespread power outage in Spain and Portugal
Indeed, and that’s the main problem: you can’t remember or know anything.

It’s is a known fact that in general the US power grid is orders of magnitude less reliable than in Europe. And the excuse of “the weather is more extreme” is just that: a lame excuse.

Just count the number of American households that have generators and/or batteries vs the Europeans if you really have an honest desire to know anything about anything.

PedroBatista··on Marijuana hospital visits linked to dementia diagnosis within 5 years – a study
That’s not what OP said, you know it and were just waiting for an excuse to dump the Rolodex of facts about alcoholism on this conversation.

Alcohol is a potent substance and beyond the ocasional use in moderate quantities it’s terrible both physically and psychologically, but it’s a “social lubricant” and has been for thousands of years because it works.

The truth is most weed people use it like they are alcoholics and there’s the inevitable group who use it as an identity and they are just unbearable to be around.

PedroBatista··on Kermit: A typeface for kids
This is a font by adults to adults: the ones in charge of the KPIs.

The font is cool, I have no gripes with it. The things I can't stand is the absolute corporate BS coated with a heavy layer of weak "science" and "empowering kids".

If the work is good, just let it do the talking. No need for waterboarding us with waves of corporate slop.

Again, the font is fine. Congratulations to the people who worked on it.

PedroBatista··on Marine Le Pen banned from running in 2027 and given four-year sentence
Just as in Romania ( and hopefully someday in Hungary ) these people "against the EU" are the ones channeling millions from the EU into their pockets.

And after all that they even become "martyrs" because everyone is corrupt and against them.

PedroBatista··on DOGE staffer 'Big Balls' provided tech support to cybercrime ring, records show
DOGE is the best thing to ever happen to foreign intelligence agencies.

Also lawyers.
