ParksNet··on Columbia whistleblower on exposing college rankings
Defund Universities: pull Government-backed student loans. Let people pay out of their own pocket if they find it valuable.
ParksNet··on Stanley Druckenmiller warns the stock market will be ‘flat’ for an entire decade
We need to drastically increase pension ages and even abandon retirement as a mainstream concept. Working part-time in 60s and 70s should be commonplace.
ParksNet··on The Ethereum merge is done
Overall daily profitability on a 3060 Ti is down from $1.56 pre-merge to $0.36 as of writing:

https://www.nicehash.com/profitability-calculator/nvidia-rtx...

Seems logical to just sell the GPU for $300 on the used market and get 833x its daily mining profitability.

ParksNet··on Italians at boiling point over how to cook pasta with less gas
Or use electric pressure cookers. A lot of heat energy is lost to steam in regular pots.
ParksNet··on Intel says one of its 13th Gen CPUs will hit 6GHz out of the box
Make sure to also cap your FPS or use Vsync. No point pumping out 100fps when you have only a 60hz TV, etc.
ParksNet··on Cancer breakthrough is a ‘wake-up’ call on danger of air pollution
The typical American kitchen doesn't exhaust cooking fumes out of the house - the rangehood (typically part of the microwave) just sucks the fumes up and blows them over the head of the cooker, distributing food particles and steam around the entire house (perfect for mold growth!).

It blew my mind seeing this as an Australian, where externally venting fans are standard.

ParksNet··on It's time to upscale FSR 2 even further: Meet FSR 2.1
Looking forward to the Digital Foundry video.
ParksNet··on The quiet cost of family caregiving
This is where voluntary euthanasia, as is being practiced in Canada, would be suitable option.

I wouldn't want to continue living if I was a burden on society and my family.

ParksNet··on Hydrogen battery startup says it has $700M order backlog
Can we ever reasonably expect to use our cars for that, with vehicle2grid?

I have a ~60kWh battery sitting around in my garage, that I typically only use 10% for daily driving.

ParksNet··on California Declares Grid Emergency
ProTip: Run your AC hard overnight, when temperatures are in the low 70s, and use your house as a thermal battery (assuming its reasonably insulated).
ParksNet··on Will California Eliminate Anonymous Web Browsing? (Comments on CA AB 2273)
California is following the WEF Agenda on Digital Identity:

https://www.weforum.org/agenda/digital-identity/

The goal is to de-anonymize all dissent, and unperson anyone who dares criticize the regime. See: Canadian truckers, Australian anti-lockdowns moms, etc.

If you want to protect children from adult content, just require ISPs to block a list of explicit websites unless the service owner opts-in.

ParksNet··on Jackson, Mississippi, to go without reliable drinking water indefinitely
Even regular tap water in many US cities is contaminated with PFAS and other pollutants.

When water does reach a house, only about 5-20% is used for cooking or drinking - the rest for watering plants, showers, toilet flushing, washing.

Is it better to just outfit each home with an under-sink reverse osmosis machine and pipe in raw reservoir water?

ParksNet··on Speech by Chair Powell on monetary policy and price stability
American Federal Spending is driven by social security recipients - the elderly and disabled (60% of Federal Spending and rising)

https://www.nationalpriorities.org/analysis/2015/presidents-...

We can no longer afford that. Government pensions should be abolished and the retirement age raised.

ParksNet··on Amazon is not going to make a bid for Electronic Arts – sources
Mandating payment provider or store competition has no clear end result, with significantly more overhead for everyone.

Countries around the world already regulate pricing on things like Credit Card transaction fees. This should be no different. In Australia for example:

"Each scheme's average interchange fee, weighted by the value or volume of transactions in each interchange category, is required to be below a benchmark of 0.50 per cent for credit cards, and 8 cents for debit and prepaid cards."

ParksNet··on Amazon is not going to make a bid for Electronic Arts – sources
No one can making any money except platform holders. 30% commissions are egregious. These aquisitions are just the side effect.

We need a commission cap on all platforms that do over $1billion in annual sales. The Apple vs Epic trial revealed 80% margins for Apple on the App Store:

https://9to5mac.com/2021/05/01/apple-runs-app-store-with-78-...

A cap of 10-15% should do it.

ParksNet··on A near 100% renewables grid is well within reach, and with little storage
The bus and bus network of the future is more likely to be built and operated by Elon Musk than any Government agency. Auto-routing, and segregation by socio-economics (based on rider ratings and enforced subscription fees) is the killer feature of a sustainable mass transit system.
ParksNet··on A near 100% renewables grid is well within reach, and with little storage
Its unclear if we even have the metal mining capacity (or the ores in the ground) to do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBVmnKuBocc
ParksNet··on Researcher finds a new method for recycling polystyrene
Why don't we just burn all these plastics in waste2energy plants?

Even with perfect recycling, the limitation seems to be on collection and separation.

ParksNet··on A near 100% renewables grid is well within reach, and with little storage
Not if we figure out vehicle-to-grid.
ParksNet··on California to ban the sale of new gasoline cars
The technology is available now. Tesla satisfies the high-end. Leafs and Bolts satisfy the mid-range. Chinese econo-boxes for the low-end.

2035 is too far out. This could have been implemented 2025.

ParksNet··on Collapse of emergency healthcare in England may be costing 500 lives every week
Add at least 60,000 illegal immigrants each year: https://www.bbc.com/news/explainers-53734793

Who are likely to be entering the country already with health problems.

ParksNet··on The gathering crisis in the UK
Can't usher in a new order if the old order is still functioning.
ParksNet··on Euro falls below parity with the dollar
What will have to give is the welfare state. Difficult to see how a retirement age in the early 60's is sustainable given this level of inflation. Better to abandon pensions entirely and just offer disability stipends for those who cannot work due to advanced age.

Returning several million net-negative economic migrants to their home regions would also be necessary.

ParksNet··on Guessing C for Every Answer Is Now Enough to Pass the NY State Algebra Exam
Seems logical for China to just fund political parties and DEI initiatives. Cheaper than building a blue-water navy.
ParksNet··on Dodge Reveals New Charger Daytona EV
Drag Coefficient of .35 (vs Model 3 of .23) and a whole bunch of extra weight for this crap is likely to result in very poor range.

Why are legacy auto makers wasting time on this sort of stuff?

ParksNet··on Benefits of the Danish transfat ban for coronary heart disease mortality
Fat goes rancid. Sugar is shelf stable and preservative.

Nutrition is not guided by fads, but by food manufacturer and retailer profit margins.

ParksNet··on Ask HN: How to find a small town to relocate for remote work?

ParksNet··on Is this the end of social networking?
Phone hardware and telecommunications networks have only recently been powerful enough to support a TikTok-like social network. Video wouldn't have worked in 2015 in an era of 3G/4G phones and 4 inch iPhone 5's.
ParksNet··on Hyundai rolls out 27 heavy-duty hydrogen trucks in Germany
Electricity can run heat pumps which are great for heating. Even better if its a water-to-ground loop underneath the building, if there is no existing district heating system.
