ParanoidShroom··on Ask HN: 4 months after posting my project on HN, it has 0 users. Has it failed?
Relink it again man, I for example just missed it and never seen your project.

I looked it up, and it seems pretty cool and well made. Kudos on keeping releasing new products.

Maybe people want a slightly different version of the product ?

I for example just never use such things in my professional/personal life. Maybe your target crowd isn't on HN ? Maybe submit towards a more subject related news site ?

ParanoidShroom··on InVision has no physical headquarters and all 700 employees work remotely
Why is remote such highly requested? I work remote but, not cause I HAVE to. My team is just all fully remote.
ParanoidShroom··on Ask HN: Do you do drugs while coding?
I've seen it being abused by people who are creeping into a burnout. Making the burn in deeper.

Like any stim, especially in our community, be careful.

It sure is fun, but pretty much wasted if doing on a day to day job.

ParanoidShroom··on How to deliver on Machine Learning projects
Isn't that the goal of every company their Medium Blog :')

That doesn't mean it's bad.

ParanoidShroom··on After century of removing appendixes, doctors find antibiotics can be enough
Is this really news ? I've gotten it removed, and before had antibiotics to cure an infection. They misread the echo and though it was too infected to start antibiotics. It hurt like hell. After the operation, he said they removed it but could have been fixed by antibiotics earlier. They decided during the operation is was safer in the future to remove it (as I had more problems with it). They really don't want to remove it here, so I'm surprised this is news ...
ParanoidShroom··on Xamarin Forms: it works
I used it around 3-4 years back ago for a banking client. I had worst experience (worse than android 2.2 ant + eclipse). However, they put a lot of effort into it. And it could be a lot better now. Microsoft has some great tech, you can't deny it. But how many other solutions need there to be.
ParanoidShroom··on Border between Belgium and the Netherlands at Baarle-Hertog/Baarle-Nassau (2017)
This, once in a while a land swap if needed. Else no one cares. The Dutch are fun neighbours.
ParanoidShroom··on Google Ventures uses algorithms to approve or kill VC investments
Oh cmon, like Ycombinator doesn't do the same. They will probably have a bunch of datapoints an features to evaluate each batch. Be it a human or a machine, it doens't matter. Only the accuracy.
ParanoidShroom··on Have we overestimated the effectiveness of psychotherapy?
I tried this, ended up with no results and down a few hundred euros. It might work, depending on the person and the person teaching/applying it. Not for me though.
ParanoidShroom··on Ask HN: Any affordable deep learning cloud service for practicing/experimenting?
This, currently using them. Works great. They do request you to deposit around 75 dollars to make sure you aren't a fraud that is going to mine 300 dollars worth of bitcoins. The 75 dollars aren't gone, and to be honest its worth the money !
ParanoidShroom··on Facebook’s Surveillance Machine
I was recruited to work there, since they are from my local neighborhood I know them some time already. They have a history of analyzing data with financial support from Samsung. They are a smart bunch, don't have bad intentions towards people. That being said, their goal is indeed ... Well not something I value personally. But they are all good guys that are eager to make an amazingly powerful product. I agree that the result can be abused. That being said, there should be a middle ground where both parties should benefit. I normally don't comment, but I don't want to see them look like a villain. They are excited engineers.
ParanoidShroom··on How we made Basecamp 3’s Android app 100% Kotlin
What ?! Do you have any experience in android development? Remember that everyone is till stuck in a null filled java 6 feature hell. And don't come at me with half ass backported lambda expressions and no real java 8 features.

I wouldn't go back, EVER

ParanoidShroom··on Problems with Android Studio
No it hasn't, its just you I'm sorry. Full time Android dev, ith no problems ... But yes the preview isn't great. Hotswapping with Jrebel, no bugs under 3 seconds. Fuck eclipse and ant, really. God I hate this thread.
ParanoidShroom··on Ask HN: What is the most undervalued startup you know?
Do you have any links, more information about the 'lasso effect' ?
ParanoidShroom··on Nikola Motor receives over $2.3B in pre-orders for its electric truck
Was wondering the same thing.
ParanoidShroom··on Ask HN: Is Xamarin worth learning?
I loved C#, hated Xamarin forms. It was about a year ago no, but I doubt things have changed that much. There were just so sooo many bugs. I have nothing against them and still think .net is amazing, but that was such a worse experience. I think reactive will win though.
ParanoidShroom··on Spanish Boy Racks Up €100K Bill, Google Cancels The Charge
No the story, is bullshit. You will get charged the first 250$, after that it will be increased to 500$. And only upped once the payment is complete. This continues for a few more steps. So you can't spend 100K on a new account. This entire story just sounds like pure BS. Google has a LOT of stuff against fraud, especially on it ads business. As it's the core ...
ParanoidShroom··on Show HN: LuxBase – Open-Source Smart Lighting Control System
I also made this. https://medium.com/@christophe.smet1/flux-irl-building-a-hue...

But a bit more, custom pcb and just an app. Keeping it simple. Cool to see other people's projects

ParanoidShroom··on I made a cheap home motion sensor and controller
That looks awesome! I made a similar thing: https://medium.com/@christophe.smet1/flux-irl-building-a-hue... Would you be interested in a collaboration ?
ParanoidShroom··on ESP8266: A $5 microcontroller with wi-fi that runs Python
Yup, NodeMCU is really easy. I used it to make a Philipps Hue clone. https://github.com/christophesmet/ledsgetIton

It's surprisingly easy connect to a WiFi and get a TCP server running

ParanoidShroom··on Ask HN: When you can't fall asleep, what do you do?
This And don't consume any stimulants that will keep you awake in the evening. Flux, and avoid blue light. Works good.
ParanoidShroom··on Ask HN: Do you struggle to sleep after coding all day?
melatonin supplements only go so far. f.lux is indeed awesome. 4pm seems a bit late for me but he has a good point. Also exercise helps a lot ! unfortunately, it also requires the most effort.
ParanoidShroom··on Facebook Chats Are Being Scanned by a CIA Funded Company?
This isn't so new, MS did the same back in the msn days.
ParanoidShroom··on Some thoughts after (almost) a year of real Xamarin use
Its hardly more performant. But here is some more info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYtB6mlu7vA&t=1m41s Yes, the documentation is far from good. But the larger problem I find is that the 2 platforms are made from opposites points, and I don't see Xamarin glueing it together as magic. But you are right, the layouts and measurements even differ per api level as they get optimisations and are really complex. It would be awesome if Xamarin could combine both platforms native performs, but I don't see that happening :(
ParanoidShroom··on Some thoughts after (almost) a year of real Xamarin use
I've been using Xamarin forms a lot now. They are miles from being as good as native development. Soooo many bugs in xamarin itself. When using Xamarin forms, you will not provide as good of product as you would native. There are also very little controls. Xaml works, but is really slow. And the layout is SOOO inefficient ! But the problem is even greater, you can't merge Android and iOS layout passes. On one platform, measuring is really fast and the other really slow ... Xamarin forms can't compensate and give native performance to this. They don't even have listview recycling ... One developer even said "RelativeLayout is probably best for you here and can do this" to the question what the fastest layout is. For Android, this is the WORST layout possible.

Anyway, you will spend a LOT of time fixing Xamarin bugs and developer their controls.

However, I LOVED .net functions, especially LINQ !

Anyway, development was really slow and performance is no were near to native.

So if you want to deliver a simple app to a client and be cross platform, then sure. But don't try to maintain that app, you will regret it.

I'm afraid the whole Xamarin thing won't solve "cross-platform" which isn't a real problem but sure. Its just another horse that Microsoft is betting on.

Oh and for the people that will have to do it anyway. Use Resharper ! Xaml IntelliSense !!! It will help you a lot.

I'm sorry I'm so negative, but it was genuinely the worst development I had.

ParanoidShroom··on Ask HN: What should I do if I feel depressed in my job?
And I though I was a unique case with this. Anyone think this is growing larger than normal ?
ParanoidShroom··on Psychedelics not linked to mental health problems or suicidal behavior
Because you brain needs a rest from that flood of information. You'll go mad just as you'll go mad if you stop sleeping.
