Panini_Jones··on Ask HN: How's your job search going in this current economy?
Yes. One of the two.
Panini_Jones··on Ask HN: How's your job search going in this current economy?
A counter balance: Mine has been fine. I spent 6 years at Meta and was laid off. I found a better paying position and started last month. I interviewed everywhere. Google was a tough slog, I had 3 recruiters laid off while I was team matching. I'm on my 4th recruiter there, but I don't think they can match my current TC and I very much enjoy my current job.

Can someone help me move away from Audible? I have about 20 titles that I've downloaded over the years and enjoy downloading and re-listening to. What's the best audiobook solution I can use so that I can cancel my subscription?

Panini_Jones··on Google lays off hundreds on recruiting team
Apologies; I wasn't very serious in my previous comment. I'm not sure how layoff algorithms work, but it is most likely polynomial. Firing people would be linear/sub-linear but candidate selection is probably a bit heavier.

Maybe a little extra overhead too for paying MBB to suggest Google's GRAD and SCI programs.

Panini_Jones··on Google lays off hundreds on recruiting team
"We’ve solved the NP-hard decision problem of reducing the size of our recruiting team in polynomial time, thus proving P=NP."
Panini_Jones··on Breaking Through Depression
For anyone experiencing depression right now, this video helped me immensely at one point in my life [0]. CBT has also changed my life; I highly recommend the book 'Feeling Good'[1].

Panini_Jones··on How the new Threads app is made
I would be surprised if that wasn't explicitly written into her employment contract.
Panini_Jones··on How the new Threads app is made
I think it's unimpressive engineering wise (minus all that Meta does for scale, which we already knew about). I think the business execution and marketing is what's impressive.
Panini_Jones··on Threads has passed 2M sign ups in the first 2 hours
Instagram does not have 3/4 billion daily active users. It's about 500 million daily active users, 2 billion monthly [0].

Panini_Jones··on Threads hits 5M signups in the first four hours
What do you mean? I'm not sure I get the reference.
Panini_Jones··on Threads hits 5M signups in the first four hours
I wonder how much this will cannibalize Instagram's engagement-share and thus eat away at Instagram's margins due to lack of ads. By going to Threads, I feel like I've sort of checked off that "I've visited Instagram" desire in my brain.
Panini_Jones··on Threads Is Now Live
Facebook was highly exclusive when it first launched. That same company made Threads. I don't know if Facebook would have been as popular if it had not leveraged scarcity.
Panini_Jones··on $900k Median Package for Engineers at OpenAI
You can filter the results on levels.fyi. New offers going back a few years are less than 7 figures (even including sign-on bonus).
Panini_Jones··on $900k Median Package for Engineers at OpenAI
Why does levels.fyi say US$542,547 for E6? I count only 6 figures.
Panini_Jones··on Mark Zuckerberg on Apple’s Vision Pro headset
Their superbowl commercial was a depressed old dog that put on a headset and became happy, wasn't it? Or was that black mirror...
Panini_Jones··on Mark Zuckerberg on Apple’s Vision Pro headset
The 'trust' factor may play into it too. For years, we've seen Meta and Apple bicker about privacy. I don't think this was just for fun; I think this was for the upcoming headset war we're going to witness.

Do you trust Meta or Apple with eye tracking data?

Panini_Jones··on Mark Zuckerberg on Apple’s Vision Pro headset
There's always the defense that he engineer wasn't aware of the patent.

Panini_Jones··on A morale crisis after multiple Meta layoffs
> AI is a great pivot.

What is the "pivot", exactly?

Panini_Jones··on I worked at Google for -10 days
I had a company use this as a scare tactic, I think.

They emailed me with an "update on my offer" only to make me wait an entire day for them to say that a lot of other people were accepting their offers and that I should hurry up. I thought it was rescinded for an entire day.

Panini_Jones··on These Tech Workers Say They Were Hired to Do Nothing
There's a narrative being pushed (I don't know if anyone is intentionally pushing it, but you can see it recently). These recruiters have been in many news articles and the circumstances make you understand why they weren't doing much work (one was a Meta recruiter hired at the beginning of the hiring freeze).
Panini_Jones··on These Tech Workers Say They Were Hired to Do Nothing
The recruiter was hired at the beginning of the hiring freeze in 2022 when the storm was setting in. What did she expect to work on before they cut her contract?
Panini_Jones··on I spent $35,000 on a “typo domain” 8 months ago. Is it a good investment?
Brilliantly, they're probably profiting further from this analysis of their "typo domain" investment.
Panini_Jones··on Another Round of GitHub Layoffs
I don't think it makes sense to make a HN post with the title "Another Round of GitHub Layoffs" based on this tweet.
Panini_Jones··on Another Round of GitHub Layoffs
Unclear.

The author's LinkedIn states that they were laid off in March 2023 in Seattle (so not a deferred EU layoff, haven't hit end of WA state WARN yet).
