PacketPaul··on Ask HN: Why aren't there other biographies of Steve Jobs?
Steve Jobs is one of the most important historical figures of our lifetime, if not the most. Here is why. He broke the hold the carriers had over phones. In doing so changed the world and ushered in the mobile economy.

Remember back to pre iPhone days. Each carrier had their own version of the phone. That phone came with bloatware and a curated list of possible apps you may download … from the carrier. The carrier had total control and say of the phone, it’s functionality and the apps installed.

Imagine a world today where the phone App Store and phone function itself was controlled by the carrier. The carrier dictates if Uber or Lyft is available to “their” customers. Only certain banks or restaurants are available based upon agreements with the carriers. The carrier picks the winners and losers in this new mobile economy and the world is fragmented based upon your cell phone carrier.

Things we take for granted like maps, messaging and FaceTime would be additional costs you pay to the carrier.

Because of Steve Jobs and his vision, that dystopian carrier controlled world does not exist. The new mobile and gig economy is all because Steve Jobs had the vision to wrestle control from the carriers. Name one other person in the last 50 years that has had this much effect on the world and how society has changed.

PacketPaul··on HP-28S Battery Compartment Door
Does not work with PLA, only ABS.
PacketPaul··on HP-28S Battery Compartment Door
Acetone will only work with ABS which has another set of issues. Reducing the layer height and a coat of paint will accomplish almost the same thing using PLA.
PacketPaul··on HP-28S Battery Compartment Door
This is a bad example. The layer heights are too high. Look at thingiverse.com for examples of what you can do with a 3D printer.
PacketPaul··on HP-28S Battery Compartment Door
An FDM printer can absolutely do the job. My kids are always breaking the battery covers, which I recreate via a FDM printer without issue.

He needs to realign how the part is printed, the layer height, and possibly nozzle size. He can also anneal the parts for added strength.

PacketPaul··on Bankrupt Chuck E. Cheese parent company wants to shred 7B tickets
7 billion tickets. That must be good for the plastic spider, finger trap, and a Frisbee. Well not a real Frisbee brand Frisbee. More a flying disk.
PacketPaul··on New York City is dead forever
I disagree with his assumptions and logic. Basically he is saying because you don’t need to live near work, people will not live in Manhattan.

There are plenty of jobs outside of NYC. Always has been. People live in NYC for the culture and lifestyle. It is a fun place to live. It will absolutely rebound.

This is trivial compared to 9/11. Yet NYC rebounded.

It is easy for a high net worth person to change primary residence. This is going to backfire and cause a reduction of revenue.
PacketPaul··on I Sold My Entire Investment Portfolio One Hour Ago
The problem I have is pulling my money out immediately reduces it by 15-30% because of taxes. So for every $1000 in stocks gains, I will only have $850 to invest in the future. So taking money out is a guaranteed reduction of your investment portfolio.

PacketPaul··on Why do U.S. coins seem to be in short supply?
Yup. Father in-law had this quarter collection. For whatever reason he spent decades collections quarters from each of the states and had well over $500 worth of quarters. None of us wanted his quarters. He was able to sell them at 3 quarters per dollar, a 25% profit!
PacketPaul··on Poland puts computer game “This War of Mine” on school reading list
I agree. It is laziness on the part of the educators. There is a trend in education where they try and make things “relevant” to today’s generation. In the process the actual material is lost.
PacketPaul··on Amazon added a non-compete after the employee entered the U.S. on an L1B visa
Every worker in The US is already saving 15% year for retirement. It is called social security. If that system was managed correctly it would be all we need. But instead the money is lumped in with general funds and spent.
PacketPaul··on Amazon added a non-compete after the employee entered the U.S. on an L1B visa
Every job in the US saves 15% of your income for retirement. It is called social security. The problem is the politicians control it instead of the individual so the money is not invested but spent. If people were allowed to have private retirement accounts with that Social Security money, everyone would be able to retire comfortably.

Ugh, that C64 book had the worst binding. Pages were hard to turn and always falling out.
PacketPaul··on Learning to program is getting harder
The author is making an excuse for not including an intro chapter and tool in his book to get the reader to a place where they can start using the book. My sixth grader checked-out a Python game programming book from the school library. He was able to install all the tools necessary to follow along and learn from the book.

Today you have Google, Youtube and every programming language available from scratch to assembler at your fingertips. There is no way it is "harder".

Yea the C64 dropped you into basic. But this was my first experience on a Commodore 64:

"Play A Game" -Syntax Error

"Play a Game of Chess" -Syntax Error

"Let's play Global Thermonuclear War" -Syntax Error
