PTRFRLL··on We gave 5 LLMs $100K to trade stocks for 8 months
> We were cautious to only run after each model’s training cutoff dates for the LLM models. That way we could be sure models couldn’t have memorized market outcomes.

PTRFRLL··on Are electric cars that much cheaper to operate?
> EVs typically require 30% less maintenance than their ICE counterparts. In terms of cost

followed by

> Consumer Reports conducted a comprehensive survey... their findings confirm that BEVs and PHEVs typically incur maintenance costs that are approximately half that of ICE vehicles over the first 200,000 miles.

Those numbers seem at odds with each other.

Anecdotally, after 20k miles with a Tesla Model Y, the only maintenance required so far has been windshield wiper fluid.

PTRFRLL··on Preserving Laptop Stickers on MacBooks
Love this. My old MacBook was covered in stickers but I grew out of most of them and removing them was a giant pain. Plus, like you mentioned, resale value took a hit. On my new MacBook, I've kept it sticker-free due to my past experience. This would give me the freedom to slap some new stickers on there knowing they're easily removable down the line.

PTRFRLL··on Boulder moves to fund citywide fiber buildout through debt
Fort Collins is in the midst of this right now, they proposed borrowing "up to 150 million" to roll their municipal fiber out. The cost break down is here, page 5.

You could run DNSCrypt and use a server that supports it:

PTRFRLL··on Venmo can now instantly transfer money to your debit card for 25 cents
Free instant transfer was my favorite part of Square Cash, too bad they now charge a 1% fee.
PTRFRLL··on Show HN: Monica, an open-source CRM to manage friends and family
Looks like you're calculating the birth date field's min-date as (today - 50 years)? Which means I can't add a persons birthday if they were born before 1967.

Edit: Looks like this is already known: https://github.com/monicahq/monica/issues/16

PTRFRLL··on AsusWRT sends network traffic data to Trend Micro if certain features enabled
I wonder if Asuswrt-merlin does the same.
PTRFRLL··on US Senate votes to undo FCC internet privacy rules
+1 for MerlinWRT, it's great. Easy to install and let's you do some awesome things vs. stock ASUS firmware. The OpenVPN client is pretty powerful too. Using policy-based routing, you can send some traffic to the VPN and other to your normal WAN.
PTRFRLL··on US Senate votes to undo FCC internet privacy rules
Both DD-WRT and asuswrt for routers have policy based routing so you can selectively include/exclude traffic from the VPN connection.
PTRFRLL··on US Senate votes to undo FCC internet privacy rules
> Once a rule is thus repealed, the Congressional Review Act (CRA) also prohibits the reissuing of the rule in substantially the same form or the issuing of a new rule that is substantially the same, "unless the reissued or new rule is specifically authorized by a law enacted after the date of the joint resolution disapproving the original rule" (5 U.S. Code § 801(b)(2))

The CRA allows the rules to be recreated if given explicit authorization from a law by congress. So they can be put back in place, just not as easily.

PTRFRLL··on Master JavaScript Programming with 18 Open-Source Books
I'm a big fan of the online version of Eloquent JavaScript, it has inline code blocks that you can edit and run. Make's it really easy to test out a concept you just read about.

PTRFRLL··on Ask HN: What're the best-designed things you've ever used?
Has Schwab upgraded their web security recently? Last time I looked at them, they had a 8 character upper limit on their password field that they then lower-cased.
PTRFRLL··on Lastpass acquired by Citrix
Just to clarify, LogMeIn (which owns LastPass) is merging with Citrix
PTRFRLL··on Detailed VPN Comparison Chart
Yes, they recently updated their OpenVPN configuration and now have a 'strong' OpenVPN config option.

>All our servers are now running OpenVPN on UDP port 1197 with our 4096bit RSA server certificate, 4096bit Diffie-Helman key exchange, AES-256-CBC, SHA256 and TLS v1.0-1.2 support.

PTRFRLL··on Detailed VPN Comparison Chart
Definitely a valid point. A recent court case involving VPN provider Private Internet Access seemed to back up their 'no logs' policy.

>“A subpoena was sent to London Trust Media and the only information they could provide is that the cluster of IP addresses being used was from the east coast of the United States,” the FBI’s complaint reads.[1]

Unfortunately, waiting for a court case involving your VPN provider isn't a great way to determine what they log.

PTRFRLL··on The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus Review: Iterating on a Flagship
>It’s hard to actually think about the user experience of the headphone jack and to design wireless earbuds that don't have all of the friction points that we've come to expect.

What are the 'friction points' of traditional 3.5mm headphones? The fact that they're wired?

PTRFRLL··on What It Costs to Run Let's Encrypt
My thoughts as well. Roughly 250k per employee?
PTRFRLL··on What Apple should tell you when you lose your iPhone
You can also accomplish it with the Activator tweak. On Lockscreen, set Hold Power Button to Do Nothing. Of course you can still perform a hard reset but it's better than nothing.
PTRFRLL··on Microsoft is ending Xbox 360 production more than 10 years after its debut
