Running a fast network on sparse data then calling one optimized for a task on a subset seems like a good optimization and dealing with video we are probably going to need them.

After you parse what an object is, tracking it doesn't take anywhere near the effort of original segmentation. No need to re-evaluate until something changes.

Maybe even use activations to turn on and off networks. "Oh text better load ocr into memory"

And it does inform a lot of our built world It's strange to think that when watching a movie only 10% is in focus.

Eye movement does provide a lot of information to other people and I think the physical movement produces feedback for velocities and things too. Mimicking biology is often a good bet.

I suspect a foveated system is going to be a big thing in machine vision as well.
PBnFlash··on AI bots are now better than humans at decoding CAPTCHAs
The difference between zero and nearly zero can be pretty large at scale.
PBnFlash··on A room-temperature superconductor? New developments
There is no reason to assume that even if it's real.

In fact, the tight tolerances of this seem to indicate the opposite.

PBnFlash··on Semiconducting Transport in LK99 reproduction attempt
I find that Twitter account to be pretty dubious.
PBnFlash··on The first room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor?
Yeah, that and the videos people are posting are really underwhelming.
PBnFlash··on The first room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor?
That is profoundly unconvincing.
PBnFlash··on The first room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor?
I thought the same thing, if these "sister" papers being posted are real these are not convincing results.
PBnFlash··on The first room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor?
Okay I can believe super conductivity, but having LK-99 a registered trademark already is where I draw the line.
PBnFlash··on The first room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor?
Even application in antenna would be revolutionary
PBnFlash··on The Mickey Mouse Copyright Runs Out in 2024
I noticed they use old Micky designs on a lot of products and logos.

I am half suspecting they are going to try and argue it's a trademark or something.

Internet communication is a gain medium. Like a pumped ruby ready to lase at the first random fluctuation. A tasteless joke getting dogpiled by tens of thousands of people. Or some speculation turning to fact in minutes.

The gain medium is in a high energy state and will emit on anything that triggers it. Simply removing the triggers will just let the gain go higher before something let's loose.

I propose doping Twitter with tungsten to poison the cascade.

Urea also is endothermic, and as it is used in diesel engines I am quite sure it's available globally.
PBnFlash··on We are all nerds: The literary works of Neal Stephenson
Fall, dodge in hell has a super interesting take on post fact reality.

Ai spam can get a lot crazier.

PBnFlash··on Risk Everything (2007)
That may just be reality. The Disney movies telling everyone they can be princesses may be the cruel ones at the end of the day.

You will not have the same opportunities. Look closely at the ones you have and don't ignore them for sour grapes.

Anything more than "sucks to be you" requires opportunity or real costs and basically no one is willing to do.

Heck even the cases of tutorship are reserved for the lucky talented ones.

PBnFlash··on What’s the strangest thing you ever found in a book?
I found an internal memo from the supreme court of Maryland in a book I ordered off of Amazon.
PBnFlash··on Tinnitus Seems Linked with Sleep
I had never heard of visual snow, it's interesting that the symptoms seem to primarily be the brain not rejecting normal noise sources like floaters and white blood cells.
PBnFlash··on Twitter CEO fires two top executives, freezes hiring
I would put parascope on that as well, they strangled meerkat for the live streaming market then let their product die.
PBnFlash··on Goldman Sachs invests $250M in compressed air energy storage
Thanks for the search term. I am not a huge fan of the "advanced polymer" wank of that video but liquid piston seems very practical compared most of the "air powered car" nonsense compressed air systems that show up.
PBnFlash··on Goldman Sachs invests $250M in compressed air energy storage
I imagine it will get better performance from high pressure water instead of the few psi of a small elevation change.
PBnFlash··on Goldman Sachs invests $250M in compressed air energy storage
Air is kind of a shitty working fluid. I always kind of dismiss compressed air storage because of that.

I saw a video recently that pumped water into tanks and used used the air as a spring. Just dip a pipe down and use the air to move the water. Extracting energy from a hyrdo generator.

Boxes like "Other Netflix Shows" at the end of every page for a Netflix show on is an ad imo.
PBnFlash··on Combining Classic and Modern: A New Approach to Camera Simulation
Pixel perfect mono depth generation seems an extremely hard problem.

Judging by the extreme colors of the example objects this may not be super clean in real cases.

PBnFlash··on Write thin to write fast
Interesting, I wonder if screen writing came to a similar format for the same reasons.
PBnFlash··on Open Source Tractor
I was following this project for a few years after 2011 and it seemed to pivot to like a weird homesteading thing. I'm glad it's doing the tractor again.

Assuming this is in good faith, the answer is it does apply evolutionary pressure on covid to develop a spike protein that can avoid the immune system.

Convalescent people do have a more diverse immune response, to other parts of the virus. And after a vaccine actually have even stronger responses still.

The immune response to covid and the spike protein in immunized people is very uniform and the antibodies we produce are very similar (although not identical.)

But the specificity of the spike targeting was chosen for a reason, it is VERY unlikely there is another spike protein that will work as well and entirely evade the immune system. Studies have been done and threatening spike mutations have been checked, and it doesn't seem like there are good alternatives.

You just need a sample of something that is evidently so pervasive we're building a nation wide dragnet to stop.

PBnFlash··on Mumble: Open-Source, Low Latency, High Quality Voice Chat
Seriously, I ran a community while discord was taking off and I had an infographic for how to install and connect but still spent hours every week walking people through troubleshooting. I tried to make a custom build preloaded with the server even.

I understand that connecting to hundreds of servers wasn't a thing in 2015 but it is just so high friction to talk to people about video games.
