OtomotO··on GPT-6 Astra in code review: Gains, privacy, and cost
> Code generated these days with fable and sol are near perfect.

If you're doing a simple CRUD app, sure.

If you're doing anything more involved they get the job done with dozens of shortcuts that bite you in the ass the moment you have on-call duty.

Way too much code and repetition and hacks.

Especially in GPU code, but also in other fields.

OtomotO··on .name Termination
Holy f*ck... you had me there for a moment. I thought they would end the top level .name domain.

Everything business related runs over such a domain.

So I totally get you! It's like someone pulled the ruck from under your feet.

OtomotO··on Mom gets 6-month suspended sentence for letting 5-year-old walk to the pond
The last time I was in the US - a couple of decades ago, I admit - people were aghast that we walked to a store just a few hundred meters away.

3 people stopped and asked whether they can drive us somewhere... I mean, super friendly people, but... it's just a few hundred meters, come on!

You were the wild west, once!

OtomotO··on Mom Gets 6-Mo Suspended Sentence for Letting 5-Year-Old Walk to the Pond
When I was a kid, about 3 decades ago, walking to school was a blast.

I had so much fun going there and going back on foot.

So much that when I was a teenager and my mother drove by my school one day and decided to pick me up, I was super unhappy, because I wanted to walk the 20 or so minutes with my friends to the bus.

When I had 9 hour school, I would need to wait 50 Minutes for a bus... or I walked the 5 kilometers home.

I always choose to walk, even when it rained, because I was faster and I loved it!

I am curious how it will be with my daughter, once she goes to school.

Because today this is totally frowned upon. But I will not play taxi for her all the time. Occasionally, sure. But CERTAINLY not every day.

OtomotO··on Why OOP Exists
The same is true about FP, just that it doesn't promise this.

I agree with the reality.

OtomotO··on Why OOP Exists
OOP exists to add a quadrillion of layers to otherwise perfectly understandable business code in an attempt to obfuscate meaning and intent and guard against malicious extraction of valuable trade secrets.

Oh, it also helps me to pay my bills, because someone has to untangle the mess.

And it helps my therapist, because he has to keep the madness that grows inside of me in check.

Jokes aside: I was taught OOP at university.

I was also taught functional programming, answer set programming and other forms such as logical programming.

Focus was definitely on OOP though.

I mainly see OOP as a way to (dis) organizer code and a way for hardware manufacturers to sell more hardware.

OtomotO··on Casey Muratori – The Root of the Root of All Evil – BSC 2026 [video]
Absolutely.

Like I agree with most everything he says and I like to optimise my own software, but for my day to day jobs and contracts it's simply not feasible.

That level of performance and rigor is not what is demanded nor paid or appreciated.

E.g. in Enterprise circles it's still OOP from top to bottom.

Mixed with a tad more functional style due to varying adoption of that paradigm in the languages used by enterprise.

But low level optimizations are not interesting to these customers at all, even though they could help them with some problems.

OtomotO··on Linux 7.2
First off: I am aware that Linux runs on much more than desktop PCs.

I am using it exclusively and since many decades.

I was specifically asking for desktop usage though, because that's what I am mostly working with.

If that point didn't come across, I am sorry. English isn't my first language.

OtomotO··on Linux 7.2
I asked specifically for a desktop.

> I am genuinely interested as I've never even considered using HDMI for my Desktop.

Sorry if that didn't come across. English isn't my first language

OtomotO··on Linux 7.2
Okay, so ELI 5 why I would now use HDMI instead of DP?

All my monitors support DP, my GPU has more ports for DP ...

I am genuinely interested as I've never even considered using HDMI for my Desktop.

OtomotO··on Incident with Github.com [resolved]
I am working for small companies, for medium sized companies and for huge behemoths.

None (apart from one customer as I said) has their code on GitHub.

The big ones because of trade secrets. Which is ironic, because most of them use Microsoft Teams and talk freely there xD

OtomotO··on Incident with Github.com [resolved]
You know, I am not employed.

I have little time in my day to spend with my daughter. But I also have responsibilities. And one client has decided to bet on github. It's the only client I've ever worked with who has their code on github. EVERY other client has hosted their own gitforge or used bitbucket.

So now I am not angry because some critical piece of US-american infrastructure is down all the time.

I am angry because instead of spending time with my daughter I have to work on this later, because there are due dates and "Well, fucking GitHub was down" ain't gonna cut it.

OtomotO··on Incident with Github.com
I've asked around in my circles, because I am genuinely interested: Everyone not working in startup space IS hosting their own instances.

Hell, even I do it.

OtomotO··on Incident with Github.com
Just in the US. I have ONE European client... ONE of dozens who use GitHub.

EVERY other client I've ever worked with used their own gitforge or at least bitbucket...

OtomotO··on Incident with Github.com
I have one client that relies on github. Just one, out of dozens I've worked with over the years.

It's just a constant pain in the ass.

Wherever I have anything to say I prefer ANY other gitforge over this piece of shit.

OtomotO··on Firefox is now the last major browser that still supports uBlock Origin
If a site doesn't work, I disagree. It should.

The web is becoming a monopoly anyway... a contradiction to what web once meant.

OtomotO··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
China thinks long-term, the US administration, especially the current one doesn't.

And who is to blame them (or to hold them accountable)? Some won't live long-term... I mean, being 80 and fat, what are the chances...

OtomotO··on libexpat now funded by the City of Munich for up to 6 months
LiMux was such a hopeful project.

Let's see whether times truly have changed with the reckless US administration and the total dependence on closed source US software.

Maybe Europe will finally truly wake up.

It is 0 monetary investment if I already have said machine lying around doing nothing.

Which is exactly the story OP talked about.

OtomotO··on OpenAI's super PAC is funding AI-generated news site attacking industry critics
What's missing is a balanced view.

People are easily divided and suddenly in a binary position.

You're either totally pro AI and can't stop talking about it all the time, it's like your new god.

Or you're a hater. And old-school person, who deceived themselves and got a good portion of their self-worth from typing strange invocations in an even stranger electronic device.

Both are bullshit, but if you're not in either camp you get flack from both.

My (!) reality is that it's useful technology, but far from the claims that were made by the people trying to sell (!) it.

I've seen quite some improvements over the years, but I haven't seen the claims materialized in any release in the last 18+ months.

Yes, it's impressive, yes, it's probably here to stay in some form or another.

But it's not Skynet, GLaDOS or even HAL ...

OtomotO··on Stacked PRs are now live on GitHub
They are a monopoly in certain regions of the world.

Even though I live in a western country, just one of my clients after all these years of being self-employed, uses GitHub.

Nobody else would ever use it. And why would they? Especially for proprietary applications.
