OtomotO··on Using Blu-ray M-Disk as backup of last resort
With the decline in quality I am no longer confident my HDDs are actually a save backup strategy.

I have so many photos of vacations and people who I've buried over the years, that I don't want to lose.

So I was thinking about using Blu-ray M-Disks as well, these last couple of months.

OtomotO··on Getting the most out of Opus 5.5 in Claude and Claude Code
Did you get paid the amount of three months?

It not: who becomes rich on all that productivity?

> Nobody in his right mind will use

Nobody AMERICAN in his right mind will use... Wait, actually a lot of them will.

But for me, as a non american, non chinese person: I'll use whatever the fuck is the best and cheapest for my task, because that's how fucking Capitalism works.

If that means that a (proclaimed) "communist" country cleans the carpet with the self-proclaimed land of the free: so be it!

OtomotO··on Kolibri: A Sovereign Open-Weight Model
> Humanity has the serious problem of being underdeveloped in the "spiritual" department.

As is shown to us by filthy rich people every day.

Or did you mean the burglar in the fawellas?

> A lot of devil in the details, and the context required to know what to focus on is rather vast.

That and you need to be able to even ask the right questions.

These are people that have NO IDEA about how computers or their software works.

Sure they can let it be explained by an LLM but unless they thoroughly study these things, they simply can't know which questions to ask.

OtomotO··on Sites in ChatGPT
It was popular among developers!

An average customer of mine hasn't got the slightest interest in dealing with this stuff.

Sure, they show me llm generated prototypes these days of how they envision a certain feature, ui and ux wise.

But that's great, because even with AI I save time iterating with them.

But for the actual programming and maintenance they still come to me.

Why? Because THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN IT!

OtomotO··on Make Tmux the OS
Actually for me it's different.

I've been using Tmux and later Zellij for many years, while I was on Ubuntu's Unity, then Gnome, KDE, i3 and lastly sway.

Until I switched to niri (https://github.com/niri-wm/niri) ... since then I haven't used tmux at all.

Very weird, come to think of.

OtomotO··on Sites in ChatGPT
No.

If I can't work as a computer scientist anymore (I am my own business since many years), I'll simply do something else.

I have many interests and "talents".

Maybe I can work as a gardener, or I help the farmers around, or I do some social work, or I work as a garbage man, or I ...

I am not worried in the slightest on a personal level.

Society might crumble though.

But then again, was it ever more than barbarism in disguise?

OtomotO··on Sites in ChatGPT
Good enough for many people, it seems.
OtomotO··on Prompting Claude Opus 5.5
It seems to be a general trend among western societies.

There are many laws in the EU that cut away freedoms.

But such is the circle of life.

At some point people will break free again, possibly violently.

I don't believe in a 1984 scenario with eternally dull and nice citizens.

Human apes are violent by nature.

OtomotO··on Software doesn't need to be readable anymore. it needs to be explainable
It doesn't need to be readable, until it does.

But of course anyone is free to hand their business to another company on a silver platter and to make themselves entirely dependent on AI providers.

(Not everyone is a huge company. There are many, many, many small and medium companies out there. And many of them WILL die, if the prices increase and they can't handle their codebases anymore.)

OtomotO··on SvelteKit 3
I will never use anything else than HTMX or Elixir/Phoenix anymore.

Unless I am paid to do it.

OtomotO··on Prompting Claude Opus 5.5
Absolutely!

Doesn't make it any less amusing from the outside, to see the US struggle with their identity. (It's most always just a struggle when freedom becomes less)

OtomotO··on Prompting Claude Opus 5.5
Ironic, especially given 100 hundred years of Hollywood proaganda telling the west that the US are the center of freedom.

Which was and is true to some extent.

And don't get me wrong, China is a dictatorship, and a tyranny for some.

But then again, the west is a tyranny for some.

OtomotO··on Plan mode is dead
I ask Codex (I am not using Anthropic anymore) to always generate a plan file first, unless explicitly told otherwise.

I also tell it to write deviations and rename plans accordingly once done.

That way I keep the codebases I have to or enjoy to work on in my head and don't become too dependant on any provider or on stochastic parrots in general.

OtomotO··on Starlink ground station in Poland hit by fire in suspected arson attack
What about "Russia views it as NATOs proxy war against them now" don't you understand?

Let me highlight the important part "RUSSIA VIEWS IT AS..."

And that's exactly what they communicate towards their population AS PROPAGANDA.

Whether Putin really sees it that way doesn't matter.

And if stating this makes me a Russian Propagandist, then so be it.

OtomotO··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
LOL half a decade.

I've been using it for more than 20 years.

I don't know why either of use loled though

> Why do people focus so much on finding scapegoats?

I, for one, am not trying to find scapegoats or go on a witchhunt.

But managers are paid a lot of money to take responsibility. Yes, that's an old school thought, responsibility. But that's one big reason they get a big, fat paycheck.

OtomotO··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
Because they make money by that.

Sometimes simple answers are not only elegant, but capture the essence of a problem.

OtomotO··on If coding is solved, what now?: Measuring the sloppiness of code
AI is the average of all programmers.

It's just that many (I guess that includes me? :D) assumed that they are better than the actually were.

OtomotO··on Astra for Coding: Why Are We Doing This Again?
I assume it's the idea that initially you wrote machine code, later assembly and then the "high level languages" started to gain traction.

And for each iteration there were scepticals...

But I am curious myself, what OP meant by this.

OtomotO··on Copyright does more harm than good and should be abolished

OtomotO··on GPT-6 Astra in code review: Gains, privacy, and cost
> Code generated these days with fable and sol are near perfect.

If you're doing a simple CRUD app, sure.

If you're doing anything more involved they get the job done with dozens of shortcuts that bite you in the ass the moment you have on-call duty.

Way too much code and repetition and hacks.

Especially in GPU code, but also in other fields.

OtomotO··on .name Termination
Holy f*ck... you had me there for a moment. I thought they would end the top level .name domain.

Everything business related runs over such a domain.

So I totally get you! It's like someone pulled the ruck from under your feet.

OtomotO··on Mom gets 6-month suspended sentence for letting 5-year-old walk to the pond
The last time I was in the US - a couple of decades ago, I admit - people were aghast that we walked to a store just a few hundred meters away.

3 people stopped and asked whether they can drive us somewhere... I mean, super friendly people, but... it's just a few hundred meters, come on!

You were the wild west, once!

OtomotO··on Mom Gets 6-Mo Suspended Sentence for Letting 5-Year-Old Walk to the Pond
When I was a kid, about 3 decades ago, walking to school was a blast.

I had so much fun going there and going back on foot.

So much that when I was a teenager and my mother drove by my school one day and decided to pick me up, I was super unhappy, because I wanted to walk the 20 or so minutes with my friends to the bus.

When I had 9 hour school, I would need to wait 50 Minutes for a bus... or I walked the 5 kilometers home.

I always choose to walk, even when it rained, because I was faster and I loved it!

I am curious how it will be with my daughter, once she goes to school.

Because today this is totally frowned upon. But I will not play taxi for her all the time. Occasionally, sure. But CERTAINLY not every day.

OtomotO··on Why OOP Exists
The same is true about FP, just that it doesn't promise this.

I agree with the reality.
