Otek··on GDPR meant nothing: chat control ends privacy for the EU [video]
> I ask them to unlock their phone and hand it to me

Let’s say they do that. What would you do next? Go over their photos? Private messages with their so? And then what? Laugh at something that you found there? Would you feel then that you proved some point? I just don’t understand how this scenario would play out in real life

Otek··on I tried every todo app and ended up with a .txt file
> Kept forgetting to check Things? How does a plain text file solve that?

This. It just doesn’t. My bet is that some people just need to change their tools from time to time. And tbh I think it’s totally fine, no need to explain yourself. Just buy another todo list app and don’t feel bad about it. Or this expensive paper notebook. Or this “dumb phone” that will make you productive. Maybe just don’t try to find a deeper meaning in it or try to convince everyone that you finally solved some big mistery

Otek··on I tried every todo app and ended up with a .txt file
Personally I like that my work and personal life is being clearly separated. Some device ale work only, some are personal only. Same with software
Otek··on Why Exercise Is a Miracle Drug
There are different yoga styles - there is Yin Yoga which is more still, there is Ashtanga Yoga which is more Strength-Based. Something like a Hot Vinyasa or Bikram will definitely be a great cardio workout. So telling us that you are doing yoga is like telling you've eaten pizza. There is lot of different toppings mate :P
Otek··on Fast
> I bet they felt that later, in the hotel room, in the shower, probably with a bottle of scotch.

Geez, life in my opinion is not so serious. It’s okay to say stupid things and not feel bad about it, as long as you are not trying to hurt anyone.

I bet they felt great and immediately forgot about this bad joke.

Otek··on AirPods succeed by not selling you a new pair
The problem is that other manufacturers can’t create headphones that integrate on the same level because those protocols are exclusive only to devices manufactured by Apple
Otek··on AirPods succeed by not selling you a new pair
I disagree with author here. I wish I didn’t, because that would mean that customers are much more aware than they really are. In reality I doubt that adding those features to existing models had any impact on sales at all. If Apple had data that people would buy headphones for those features, they would 100% made them exclusive. AirPods are just the best in its class, that’s why people are buying them.
Otek··on Tools for 2025
Not a oils maintainer, but: I took a look at your report, and it seems like it could use a bit more detail. Things like clearer steps to reproduce, expected vs. actual behavior, and a more descriptive title might help get it addressed faster. Open-source projects often have limited resources, so anything that makes it easier for maintainers to pinpoint the issue can speed things up. Maybe updating the report with more context could help move it along?

Otek··on Markov Keyboard: keyboard layout that changes by Markov frequency (2019)
A simple solution that would work on any keyboard (but will be much easier to do on a keyboard that supports custom layout and layers, e.g Ergodox) would be to send small letter of key is pressed under 0.5s (to be tested what value feels best) and capitalized if over this value. After a while it might feel natural to press quickly for a small letter and slightly longer for capitalized
Otek··on Certain names make ChatGPT grind to a halt, and we know why
Title: “… we know why”

Article:

> OpenAI did not respond to our request for comment about the names, but all of them are likely filtered due to complaints about ChatGPT's tendency to confabulate erroneous responses when lacking sufficient information about a person.

Yeah, so they don’t know, just a speculation. Thanks, I hate it

Anyone has good resources on importing such data from apple - I’m using Apple Watch but would love to visualize raw data myself with grafana

There are lots of them. You should checkout “brew cask”

My favourite analogy: Heliosphere is like water flowing from a faucet into a sink: the water represents the solar wind emanating from the Sun, and the point where it meets the sink's surface illustrates the heliosphere's boundary with the interstellar medium. Just as water changes direction and slows down upon hitting the sink, the solar wind decelerates and changes direction at the heliospheric boundary, where it interacts with the gases and particles of interstellar space.

Otek··on What's new in Emacs 29.1
It amazes me that it took so long for emacs to have this kind of started kit. And I haven’t thought of it either. Thank you and please support it!
Otek··on Exa Is Deprecated
I have alias ls=exa in my config for almost two years now. It’s honestly great. I guess I’ll use eza from now
Otek··on Emacs Bedrock: A minimal Emacs starter kit
I agree but also feel like there is so much to improve in editor spaces but current “defaults” are just good enough. I like the keyboard example - current staggered keyboard layout is only used because we had physical typewriters that needed staggered keys because of physical constraints. But our fingers aren’t really good at going left and right, even slight movement means that you need to move your whole wrist left or right. Also keeping your wrists so close to each other is painful and not natural, definitely less comfortable than keeping them at shoulder distance. But the default is just good enough and too strong. We have split ortho keyboard but they are niche. So any revolution in editors will be stopped by the fact that too many people are comfortable enough with current default. And I’m honestly hungry for some revolution here

Otek··on Mastering Emacs
> Then the pain I get, when I see people closing their vscode, just to reopen it in another directory > Then the pain I see others have, when juggling a high number of editor tabs in intellij or vscode, instead of buffers that exist and can be switched to using keyboard shortcuts. I lost faith in tabs for code editors.

That my biggest beef with VScode and IntelliJ. Why on earth I can’t have multiple projects open and switch between them as fast as in Emacs / Vim with Tmux Other than that I could somewhat live with modern editor, but I’m switching constantly between 5 different projects and VSCode solution to have single workspace makes navigation an awful experience

Exactly this. Guy had a comfortable stable job for years. Probably knew codebase and technology enough to have lots of time for family/friends/hobbies. More than this story scares me how HN reacted

Otek··on A world where people pay for software
I just use single-use card whenever I don’t use AppStore for subscription. That way they won’t charge me again and if I end up using and liking the software I will remember to change card or provide another single use card
Otek··on A world where people pay for software
I know people hate Subscriptions but honestly I quite like them. I can pay for one month usually not very high price to use software when I need it. Problem is to be solved by developers, they should give more often option to buy lifetime license, or allow you to use software for lifetime after you payed for 1 year of subscription (without updates). It’s just not profitable enough I believe. Maybe we will have appropriate laws in the future - that’s the solution I would like to see
