Who is doing the writing?
Ostrogodsky··on Ask HN: How do you get a job after a 2-year gap in your work history?
Just lie. Seriously, I am not saying you need to say you worked for X or Y when you didnt, but if you worked 4 years for X company and you have now a 2 year gap , say you worked for 5 years, and you have now 1 year as a freelancer or something to that effect. Dont play naive with the companies when they are willing to deceive you all the way.
Ostrogodsky··on Tell HN: My Microstartups make $500/day while I'm sleeping
Thanks so much
Ostrogodsky··on Tell HN: My Microstartups make $500/day while I'm sleeping
The Power of Habit book suggest that if you want to be X you have to behave like X, what was your routine, not now, but in the period between starting from zero and reaching, say 4k MRR?
Ostrogodsky··on Tell HN: My Microstartups make $500/day while I'm sleeping
You make good points, but let me ask you something without malice or bad intentions, have you put any of this in actual practice?I have always been fascinated about the huge gap between giving good advice and actually following it. I am talking from personal experience here.
Ostrogodsky··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
No, I am more confused now.

Are you saying white, rich people and women dont get preferential treatment in the US justice system?

Ostrogodsky··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
> Racial and gender disparities are real, but against the 'rich' part in this case...

Sorry I didnt understand what you meant here.

Ostrogodsky··on How to Write about Africa (2019)
Because this a very naive (intended or not) view of the book publishing industry. Yes! everybody can write a book, at least in theory, but that is just 5% of the task. How about distribution, editing, advertising, shelf space in the bookstores, reviews, etc. A book who cannot reach potential readers may as well not exist.

Ostrogodsky··on Zotero: Free, easy-to-use tool to collect, organize, cite, and share research
I love and I use exclusively Linux but sometimes I despair:

> How do I install Zotero?

Mac Open the .dmg you downloaded and drag Zotero to the Applications folder. You can then run Zotero from Spotlight, Launchpad, or the Applications folder and add it to your Dock like any other program.

After installing Zotero, you can eject and delete the .dmg file.

Windows Run the setup program you downloaded.

Linux Download the tarball, extract the contents and run zotero from that directory to start Zotero.

For Ubuntu, the tarball includes a .desktop file that can be used to add Zotero to the launcher. Move the extracted directory to a location of your choice (e.g., /opt/zotero), run the set_launcher_icon script from a terminal to update the .desktop file for that location, and symlink zotero.desktop into ~/.local/share/applications/ (e.g., ln -s /opt/zotero/zotero.desktop ~/.local/share/applications/zotero.desktop). Zotero should then appear either in your launcher or in the applications list when click the grid icon (“Show Applications”), from which you can drag it to the launcher.

Ehhh, I am not doing all of that.

Wait, there is hope, it also says:

> Debian/Ubuntu-based Distros > A longtime community member maintains zotero-deb, a lightweight wrapper for > the official tarball.

Let's go there!

"PSA

I'm in the process of transferring the hosting of these packages to the Zoero organisation. Until that is done, the following options are available:

download from this repo (re)install using curl -sL https://github.com/retorquere/zotero-deb/releases/download/a... | sudo bash caveat: github has made recent changes to how they're hosting release files, which triggered a long-standing bug in apt. If you hit this problem, see this thread for a workaround. download from sourceforge (re) install using curl -sL https://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/zotero-deb/install... | sudo bash caveat: sourceforge uses a mirror system that updates haphazardly and which may redirect you to a mirror that is down. If you get errors, try again in a few hours."

Ostrogodsky··on 2021 Letter
Meh, China is probably the biggest county in DOTA (just as Korea with SC). The piece has very interesting points, but the author eagerness to criticize every single thing about China (ironic, because he complains that the Chinese are petty) clouds his judgement.

Also, I dont know in which world he lives (I suppose most of his friend were Asian-Canadians) but your average westerner cannot name even 1 single cultural production of Taiwan. In the case of South Korea, most of the stuff they are known for (mainly KPop, and great movies/tv shows) has been produced in the last 20-25 years when the country reached an economic level and show business know-how that allowed them to flourish. China is not there yet.

China produces lots of good stuff, that for many reasons (distribution, advertisement, political hostility) are not known in the west.

Just one example, this is a fantastic TV show. I even say it is the best show I've watched in 2021, and you can watch it, legally and for free:

https://www.iq.com/album/the-bad-kids-2020-19rrhl1l3l?lang=e...

The quality is there, it needs to be more wisely advertised. Lots of mediocre productions too of course, but that is just Sturgeon's law in action.

Ostrogodsky··on Don't Waste the Good Days
Or you just need to work because otherwise you will starve and/or become homeless.
Ostrogodsky··on Why Brahmins lead Western firms but rarely Indian ones
That all is true, but I was not the one who created the dilemma, the original parent did. Tribalism like nationalism is good just in very small doses.
Ostrogodsky··on How Y Combinator Changed the World
I mean Dropbox and Stripe are cool companies but they hardly "changed the world", they made their founders and their inventors very rich though. AirBnB has been more impactful for sure, but I dont know if the total impact is a positive one, it seems to me they are like the other "gig economy" companies which like to privatize the earnings and socialize the nasty generated externalities.

People need to leave this site every once in a while and check out the actual world, it is a healthy vaccine against undue self-aggrandizement.

Ostrogodsky··on Why Brahmins lead Western firms but rarely Indian ones
Let's see, the global world has brought us international commerce, free exchange of information (95% of a CS curriculum is based on things created in the West), the possibility(limited but existent) of studying and working in a different society, international agreements, standards and organizations.

Tribalism has brought us, wars, petty disputes, populist politicians and bigotry.

I know which one I would choose in a heartbeat.

Ostrogodsky··on The Price of Discipline
Regarding Agassi,no doubt he had a hard childhood, but I always take those celebrities books with a huge grain of salt. A book that says, "I had an OK childhood, nothing wild, nothing out of the ordinary, when I won I was happy and when I lost, I was down" would not sell.
Ostrogodsky··on Lessons from my PhD
Young people need to realize that the things we love about science: the uncompromising search for the truth, its international and no-boundaries character, the ability to bow down to evidence, the ambition of the ideas, are just a very distilled fraction (basically the highlights) of a what it is a very mundane, fragile, political human activity, full of petty and lame characters, absurd situations and pathetic developments.
Ostrogodsky··on Lessons from my PhD
Well, as defeatist as going to work fo a FAANG and not expecting that your managers will give a toss about fairness, their users privacy, or the spirit of regulations. Life is like this. Right now in the African Savannah a lion is mauling a gazelle, it happens daily.
Ostrogodsky··on Ask HN: Why doesn't YC list compensation for their own open positions?
Does GitLab also price their products regionally?
Ostrogodsky··on Ask HN: Why doesn't YC list compensation for their own open positions?
Because they want to extract as much as value as possible from their employees while paying as low as possible, and listing compensation is against that. In this I am with Žižek.Capitalism is a religious movement, not an economic one. Many people find perfectly rational for any company to this, but find highly offensive if a person decides to work as less as possible while still getting paid.
Ostrogodsky··on Steam has been banned in China
Tell that to all the people that got their lives ruined. How is the pay rate going on here?: https://thehill.com/blogs/in-the-know/in-the-know/441480-ins...

I only get paid 50 cents by the yellow menace and I am not a rapper.

Ostrogodsky··on Steam has been banned in China
The first article is from Wikipedia so you are being highly disingenuous. The second thing is that it is pretty much okay and acceptable since this has never stopped. You seem to believe that if the US does something wrong and it is reported then everything is fine in the world, well, no. This guy went to jail for revealing that the drone attacks were ineffective and amounted to criminal actions:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/27/former-intelli...

I can read about it, that does not make it even 0.0001% better.

Since you asked:

https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3160705/year-chin...

The problem with most westerners is that they just simply dont understand China. Just read this, relax, it is from Harvard, not from Xi's wumao army

Ostrogodsky··on Tell HN: You are not alone this Christmas
Meh, I have been alone for like 18 straight Christmas. Life goes on. BTW dont believe the people saying "I care about you" "Feel free to reach me by email", that's an exercise in showing off. If you think you cant cope, contact a professional who can help you, not a rando on the Internet.

Ostrogodsky··on Steam has been banned in China
Impossible. You are thinking about it as an exercise in rationality and morals. This is a fight of chimp tribes, all the bla bla about human rights, justice, liberty is a very thin coat about the hate for the other band of apes. We are talking about 7 million years of evolution in action.
Ostrogodsky··on Steam has been banned in China
Standard practice anywhere you have... people, most are perfectly reasonable but many are deeply indoctrinated nationalists.

Just a cursory reading of the comments in any topic about China will show you that their western counterparts are alive and kicking here
