Orothrim··on Defold: Lua game engine for web and mobile
I really like Defold, have used it for a number of small games I've developed for a side hustle.
Orothrim··on Tamagotchi Connection
I've been thinking about making an app in the style of Tamagotchi, but where you do the habits you want to learn to 'feed' the Tamagotchi.
Orothrim··on How the 'lazy girl job' took over work TikTok
You think most companies are comparable to Google, one of the worlds most profitable companies? The large large majority of jobs aren't mostly doing nothing and almost no businesses do what you are describing and survive long-term.
Orothrim··on How the 'lazy girl job' took over work TikTok
They are designed to be addictive yes, but that doesn't make the user non-complicit. It's easy to stop using these products, especially if you have other interests in your life.
Orothrim··on The FactoBattery
They are unreliable and unpredictable for the scales considered in the energy market.
Orothrim··on Taking over a Dead IoT Company
As would I!
Orothrim··on Show HN: Trading cards made with e-ink displays
Could you have paper cards that have a barcode or qr code that are "activated" when placed into the console and then represented by your 2-3 E-Ink cards? Then the paper cards could be boosters/environment effects and all/some E-Ink cards are affected by them.
Orothrim··on Westinghouse sees a tech disrupter in its eVinci microreactor
Reminder: solid radioactive waste is many times more safe than pumping waste into the air we all breathe. Fossil fuels kill many people per year by their waste and radioactive waste is an easy to solve problem comparatively speaking. Additionally some SMRs are designed to be thrown out wholesale because they are already the container for the nuclear waste. Finally, radioactive waste can be used as a power source.
Orothrim··on Westinghouse sees a tech disrupter in its eVinci microreactor
I recommend looking into base vs peak loading for the energy grid. Nuclear is good as base load power, batteries are good for peak loading and renewables are good for charging batteries.
Orothrim··on Don’t let the great ESG self-deception infect climate tech investing
Grow up, these climate changes will happen, the companies can make the appropriate changes now (early), or they can hold off and be forced to comply or die by governments.
Orothrim··on Don’t let the great ESG self-deception infect climate tech investing
If the company kills people in the process of generating as much profit as possible, it should be stopped. You are saying it should be stopped by the 'rules' which clearly means that governments should be forcing rules that focus on the ESG objectives? That seems like a dangerous path to walk. Any intelligent business manager knows that it is better to act early and in ways you choose than to be forced down a road you don't want later.
Orothrim··on Authors’ names have ‘astonishing’ influence on peer reviewers: study
You can't see any downside of double blind?

There are many systems we use which provide anonymity, and they always result in some form of abuse. Such as phone numbers (scam calls), Internet (cyber harassment, scams, viruses), cryptocurrency (all the scams). Any system where humans can gain advantages from abusing anonymity they do so.

I'm not an academic so maybe there are already safe guards, but from my understanding people already cut any research into as many small papers as they can. Truly double blind peer review would likely encourage this. Maybe it would also further encourage people to steal research or peer review outside of their expertise.

The benefits may outweigh the negatives, but I'm sure people will find a way to abuse it too, consciously or not.

Orothrim··on The Full Chess Cheating Report of Hans Neiman
How is this not acceptable? The person cheated, chess.com said they would keep it confidential, circumstances changed. They didn't swear on their mother's graves.
Orothrim··on The Full Chess Cheating Report of Hans Neiman
He specifically said "I never cheated in paid-tournament games" and "I never cheated whilst streaming". Chess.com presents pretty clear evidence that's untrue.
Orothrim··on The Full Chess Cheating Report of Hans Neiman
Good design skills have zero correlation with good data analysis skills.
Orothrim··on The Full Chess Cheating Report of Hans Neiman
Due to the need for real-time input that's just not true.
Orothrim··on On Mr. Beast and being alone in a circle for 100 days
We aren't inventing more and more complex ways of forcing that reality to still exist. That reality does still exist, it's close to not existing, maybe only another 300-400 years, but it's still 100% true right now. You are ignoring the massive logistical challenge of getting all those things to all those people and spreading all that knowledge to get production happening. Additionally, our current system is built on a 100 leaning towers of pisa. Look at Ukraine, it gets invaded and our global supply of food is massively impacted, many people are going to starve and freeze to death over the war in Ukraine this winter who have never set foot in Ukraine or Russia.
Orothrim··on Please don't be spooky
Why do I have to wear a seatbelt when I drive safely?
Orothrim··on “Autistic people can’t acknowledge when they’re wrong”
The issue with this article is how the author is approaching all of these discussions. There is no attempt to see the other person's perspective, or evaluate how the author should be approaching the discussion. This is very common among us Engineers but is a massive failure. If a manager comes over and suggests something to you, you need to understand their perspective for coming to that discussion, not asking questions that would make you make the same suggestion they made.
Orothrim··on $55 board turns a Raspberry Pi CM4 into a router
Have you considered any of the raspberry pi power button options that exist? Something with a reasonable size capacitor and a signal pin to let the Pi know to shutdown when it's lost power, before the capacitor runs out, might work?
Orothrim··on Mission to reach and operate at the focal region of the solar gravitational lens
I don't believe so, I believe that the size and gravity of the sun have a gravitational effect on space an result in a focusing of light at 500+AU distance from the sun. Hence the focal region is around this sphere and is where you would "sit" to use the sun as a lens and get information about the universe on the opposite side of the sun.
