Orangeair··on Rust’s dependencies are starting to worry me
I think that https://blessed.rs does a pretty good job of providing recommendations for things that probably can't be crammed into the standard library, but which you'll almost certainly end up needing at one point or another. I honestly like that system a lot, it makes it so that the only packages you need to worry much about are usually doing something rather specific.
Orangeair··on Rust’s dependencies are starting to worry me
It's a long standing bug, setenv and unsetenv are not thread-safe

Orangeair··on A prank cursor resulted in an employee being fired before they started (2020)
The joke is that Microsoft was truthfully able to say "the individual responsible is no longer with the company", a phrase which normally implies that someone has been fired as a direct consequence of the event, without actually firing anyone. The statement was true because the individual responsible had finished their internship, and hadn't yet been brought back as a full-time employee.
Orangeair··on Htmx become 0 clause BSD-licensed
Apparently it changed from 2-clause BSD: https://github.com/bigskysoftware/htmx/commit/e16f1865a494b6...

(The zero clause license drops the requirements for preserving the copyright notice when distributing)

Orangeair··on Air Canada is responsible for chatbot's mistake: B.C. tribunal
That last one was great

> In his statement, Mr. Mackoff described distinct conversations he had with each employee, provided the supervisor’s name, and submitted the diagram he drew while trying to explain to the employees how to count the 10 calendar days. As Mr. Mackoff’s witness statement includes so much detail, and as Air Canada has produced no contrary statement, I accept that Air Canada refused to transport both Mr. and Mrs. Mackoff on February 15, 2022 and so breached its contract with them.

Orangeair··on Why you've never been in a plane crash
Just looked into this, so there is actually a growing movement of people doing that, interesting.
Orangeair··on Why you've never been in a plane crash
I don't necessarily know that you can conclude from a few memes that people are actually out there doing this, I see it more as venting frustration. They're certainly advocating for it, though.
Orangeair··on Why you've never been in a plane crash
I've seen hundreds of posts on that sub, but never anything approaching what you're describing. Do you have an example?

Orangeair··on Ask HN: How to delete all Google photos so that I don't lose access to Gmail?
This page will show you your storage quota usage by service, and it gives you some tools to clean things up: https://drive.google.com/settings/storage
Orangeair··on 'Ray, this is a religion': How Bridgewater lost two top hires
> No one is going to comment on some random crap you publish on what's a glorified blog.

I have no idea why the article doesn't lead with this, but it's adapted from a book:

> Dalio declined to be interviewed for the book from which this article is adapted.

Orangeair··on The oldest and most expensive rum?
I think this article is simply wrong about the "most expensive" part.

> The last 16 bottles sold for a total well in excess of £100,000 making Harewood Rum officially not only the oldest, but also the most expensive rum in the world.

That only works out to 6k or 7k pounds sterling per bottle. Meanwhile:

> Jamaican distiller J. Wray & Nephew is also recognised for producing one of the world’s most expensive rums, a 17-year-old expression priced in the region of £40,000 (US$52,000) and used to create the first Mai Tai cocktail in the 1940s.

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2019/05/wray-nephew-presi...

And the other bottle they mention is more expensive than this as well.

Orangeair··on Super Mario 64 – Watch for Rolling Rocks – 0.5x a Presses [video]
I also watched through this recently and would highly recommend it to anyone with a passing interest. Some of the discoveries made were just insane, and the number of things that only barely work is kind of mind blowing.

Bismuth is also just a generally high quality YouTuber.

Orangeair··on Svelte 4
It does say "Svelte 3+" on the page, although I don't know if the plus was there before.
Orangeair··on Apollo will close down on June 30th
I'm leaning towards automated, given that it includes the article "Redditor creates working anime QR codes using Stable Diffusion".
Orangeair··on Micromouse: The fastest maze-solving competition [video]
Did you have an prior experience with FIRST or other robotics competitions?
Orangeair··on Show HN: Trogon – An automatic TUI for command line apps
> Command line apps reward repeated use, but they lack in discoverability.

The biggest thing preventing me from learning more CLI explained in one sentence, I'll definitely be looking into this.

Orangeair··on Help make mass surveillance of entire populations uneconomical
I wish it would expand on some of its recommendations. It says to avoid Authy, but doesn't give any reasons. Is this just a FOSS absolutist site? That doesn't really seem to mesh with the title for me, I was expecting to see some actual info about curbing data collection.
Orangeair··on So you've installed `fzf` – now what?
Thanks for the link!
Orangeair··on So you've installed `fzf` – now what?
Is there a preceding blog post I could read here? Something like, "So you've just heard of fzf for the first time, what even is it?" I was kind of surprised that the author doesn't even make a passing attempt to define or explain it.
Orangeair··on Mark Zuckerberg: “Please Resign” (2010)
Having worked at a different FAANG (and more recently than 2010), I'm kind of on Mark's side with this one. It got to the point where I worked that anything that executives said would be leaked pretty much immediately, so we hardly ever got any information ahead of when the general public did. From what people with longer tenures said, there used to be more information shared with the company at large, but they had to curtail it due to the constant leaks.

Obviously I don't mind people leaking things that are cause for serious concern (i.e. whistleblowers), but yeah it results in kind of a crappy company culture when the people setting the direction for the company are afraid to share their plans with the people actually doing the work. Maybe that's just inevitable for a company with a hundred thousand employees, though.

Orangeair··on Launch HN: BuildFlow (YC W23) – The FastAPI of data pipelines
I think your site could use some copy editing. I was confused by the nested schema example [1], I don't even see NestedScema referenced after it's defined, maybe the float field should have used that type? Also noticed an instance of "BigQuer" on that page (not a particularly egregious typo, but I was on your site for all of thirty seconds).

Orangeair··on Haraldur Thorleifsson's Personal Site
Surreal to me to see how many people in this thread and trying to steer the conversation towards whether or not the firing was justified based on his job performance. What the actual fuck does it matter? In what world is it okay to fire someone without communication and then publically mock them like Elon did here? I'm truly unable understand the willingness some people have to jump to the defense of billionaires.
Orangeair··on Ask HN: Is TypeScript worth it?
I would narrow this slightly to "programming with other people". For instance, I love Python for small personal projects and interview questions and stuff like that, but I've found working with it professionally to be much more of a headache.
Orangeair··on Tomu – A family of devices which fit inside your USB port
Huh, honestly I think the first person threw me off there, I read that but didn't realize it was talking about the device.
Orangeair··on Tomu – A family of devices which fit inside your USB port
I looked pretty thoroughly through the site and the product pages, but I still cannot find any discussion of use cases for the Fomu. Is it just education, ie. learning how to program an FPGA? I'm having trouble telling if it even has any dedicated I/O or if you can exclusively interact with it through USB.
Orangeair··on Mazda has tested a synthetic fuel in an unmodified MX5 on a 1000-mile road trip
Does anyone know what ever happened to Mazda's skyactiv thing? Was supposedly going to help ICEs be more fuel efficient by adding an extra stroke cycle with water? Seemed very promising, but I haven't heard anything about it in years.
