OpenBSD-reich··on Post-quantum cryptography
I think the better solution is a steep tax on the end product for any product containing at least one microprocessor which executes instructions from a mutable (even if "burned in") memory source, which totally and completely doesn't allow the owner to modify this memory with code of the owner's choice or authorship, with either physical or cryptographic mechanisms. All such devices should be treated as "rented" and not owned, and should have unlimited warranty which must be honored in perpetuity so long as a company exists (including future buyers of the company's assets).

It is a national security risk to allow commercial device makers to lock down the software on these devices and then abandon them in a few years. If in twenty years today's SmartTV has a network vulnerability discovered, the manufacturer (or whoever buys or merges with it) should be liable for updating the SmartTVs, unless it has made the device such that the owner can write and change the code at will.

This law should apply to cars, microwaves, smartphones, computers, washing machines, tractors, game consoles, etc. A twenty percent or more sales tax and perpetual warranty for "closed" platforms. Make it no longer economical to do business the way it currently is done!

OpenBSD-reich··on C2x: the next real revision of the C standard
Error handling is best done with asserts which check for off-domain inputs and off-range outputs, and explode the running program if triggered.

I mean, security trumps convenience and uptime, right guys? Y'all do build your functions with domain and range in mind, right guys?

I love my PocketCHIP. Perfect form factor. Get one or two on eBay before they become rare!

I want to try installing OpenBSD on mine sometime soon.

OpenBSD-reich··on Apple Admits to Hardware Quality Problems with iPhone X, MacBook Pro
I agree. Laptops should be no thinner than 1.5". I would love a nerd machine that is 2" thick, has no less than ten various ports, has a fat battery that could last more than 24 hours at 'performance' energy settings, most things on replace-able/upgrade-able daughter boards (especially graphics), replace-able CPU on a socket, and four SSD + two optical drives. The replace-able parts following standards like desktop PCs do.

Laptops were the first to succumb to the thin/miniaturization cancer, and phones really took off with it. The best form factor smartphone IMO is still my first cellphone I had: Samsung SCH-i730. It had a screen which slid up revealing a physical keyboard, it had a camera, it had a large extended battery, it even had an extend-able antenna! It was not shy about being thick! I grew up loving tech, and now with faceb0rg + scr00gle spying, crapple + android thin-sh1t hardware, "smart tvs," more and more user-lockout in hardware (intel ME?), I'm finding myself hating it all more and more!

OpenBSD-reich··on Loneliness Is Hard on the Brain
I've often thought there needs to be a 'church' for Atheists, basically a carbon copy of the modern churches but with jesus and bible stripped out completely. The social grouping is therapeudic and I think the religion meme hitches to this for continuation and longevity.

The other possibility is to make dues-free fraternal organizations. Churches are payment-optional so why not payment-optional frats? Say dues payment halves bar prices (and no-dues prices are somewhat uncomfortably high).

OpenBSD-reich··on Why I Quit Being a Therapist [video]
Oh please. Guns are no more the root of gun violence than BitTorrent is the root of digital piracy. Gun control is the cheap easy path to kudos and biscuits, where improving the mental health system is the long tiring hardwork nobody wants to do. Muslim examples in Europe have shown vehicles and knives to be just as effective.

Last but not least, if you vote away my hobby/toy, don't whine like a little piggy when I rally others to vote away your hobby/toy. Government is force which should be used sparingly and responsibly.

DM an invite plz.

Hopefully Tor isn't a problem. In the Age Of Snowden, I use it almost exclusively. Also might I suggest a .onion gateway (and maybe a .i2p gateway too)?

This is not good.

Africa is going to explode by a billion this century while Native Europeans worldwide continue to decline, having been since the '80s.

OpenBSD-reich··on Writing Network Drivers in Rust [pdf]
Why rust? Didn't Ada and SPARK already pretty much solve the problems rust is tackling? rust feels like the systemd of languages: came out of nowhere and very heavily evangelized.
OpenBSD-reich··on The Irresistible Urge to Build Cities from Scratch
My dream city is one where the building layouts are not densely placed, where easements are quite large to accomodate both wider roads and greater parking area, where everyone drives a motor vehicle, where every 'intersection' is an over/under like freeways are so there are no intersection signals and flow is nearly always constant. A city where pedestrians have no easy access to putting foot on roadway, and where bikes are not allowed on roads for being an impediment to motorists. Also this city would have 24-hour public transport.

OpenBSD-reich··on Algorithms Designed to Fight Poverty Can Actually Make It Worse
Best idea is if someone who can read it copies and pastes it into several pastebin, dpaste, bpaste, etc. sites and links them in the comments. By the time DMCA hits the paste sites it'll be a few days later and everyone on HN will have read it.

BitTorrent over Tor (or I2PSnark, which needs more <3) is the superior solution to bad guy big-media. It's free and only needs a minimal amount of patience.
OpenBSD-reich··on Kids’ Apps Are Crammed With Ads
>I do pirate.

Y-har matey, good to see a shipmate aboard! In the age of advertising often times the 'legit' sources where one can buy content still show ads or handcuff your free use of it. BitTorrent (over Tor)/I2PSnark/IPFS/Freenet/etc will probably remain the best way to obtain digital consumables. Big (and small) media still doesn't understand that being anti-user is a Bad Thing(tm).

OpenBSD-reich··on Kids’ Apps Are Crammed With Ads
I think he's right on and should continue giving this comment section the facts about what even these apparently "clean" apps are doing. Data tracking is the edge of the sword opposite to advertising and should be treated on equal terms!

Hopefully this will cause an uptick in Gentoo (and OpenBSD)!
OpenBSD-reich··on A Dark Consensus About Screens and Kids Begins to Emerge in Silicon Valley
IMO the problem is two pronged: a) hardware changes too much too fast creating a constant hamster wheel of driver hacking which puts GNU, Illumos, and BSD at a disadvantage, and b) that hardware is nowhere near significantly documented enough to make driver writing quick and painless. (a) can be fixed by having platform standards where the interfaces and commands are the same between device brands, but I think the better solution would be to fix (b) by using force of law or taxation to make device manufacturers fully and publicly document their hardware so that there are no "magic" or secret instructions, allowing FOSS hackers the ability to write open drivers. Ideally solution for (b) would be wide enough to include firmware and microcode, and penalty (tax) being both heavy enough (50%-200%) and applied at the customer purchase point of the chain (tax is on the final MSRP of the computer/phone/game-console/microwave/vehicle and not simply on the price of the noncompliant internal component[s]).

(b) can be done with a proposition in the State of California and a few million spent on a very convincing ad campaign ("Vote yes on Proposition 42 to take back total control of your computing devices! Don't let advertisers and data leeches control and dictate your life from behind the curtain!"). California because it's home to a big chunk of Big Tech, and because it's a market too big to simply ignore and not sell into.

OpenBSD-reich··on A Dark Consensus About Screens and Kids Begins to Emerge in Silicon Valley
I'm waiting for you guys to implement a separate "screen" or "application" on all slots, which is a cryptocurrency or Forex or CFD (or even pretend "securities") client hooking up to the casinos' central exchange system, and the casino takes no positions long or short but just charges a very small % tx fee on each transaction. If it's cryptocurrency, then have 1:1 conversion between cryptocurrency and the various chip species each representing said currency (like Doge chips, Litecoin chips, Bitcoin chips, Ethereum chips, etc) so the incentive to trade on the slots is that the player can then gamble the objects of trade directly. The keys (or casino crypto exchange authentication data) can be stored on smart card and can be carried around by the gambler. Then it's a matter of having various slots and tables which accept these other cryptos in addition to their existing dollar variants. It's like having Euro machines and tables, Renminbi machines and tables, etc.

OpenBSD-reich··on Even After Fix, Windows 10 Update Is Botching File Operations
If I had the cash (like $25k budget), I'd go all out on a Talos II (by Raptor Engineering) with maxed out CPU and RAM configuration, and if I couldn't get OpenBSD running on it I would christen it with NetBSD.

I would love a "fully open" hardware platform, which is a non-starter in the Apple and amd64 PC world today. It'll take an act of congress (or a California proposition) to enact a tax high enough to economically make this be fixed, say 100%, on all consumer products containing microprocessors which read software/firmware/microcode from a memory store yet a) prevent the owner, if competent, from modifying the software by means of cryptographic signature or "burn-in," and/or b) do not provide enough documentation on design, where a competent owner could write his own software/firmware/microcode, and write his own drivers. This will apply to cars, microwaves, TVs, Intel/AMD CPUs, GPUs, cellphones both smart and dumb, game consoles, kids' toys, and even greeting cards, etc. To not have a 100% endpoint tax, the device must either be: immediately owner writable, or b) must have a jumper or DIP switch to enable owner write-ability, or c) must include a mechanism to accept owner cryptographic public keys to allow owner to write his own signed image, or d) must have an entry for an OEM-provided code which unlocks owner write (OEM must immediately give this code unconditionally on owner request, and may limit warranty for that particular device), and in all cases where OEM public keys exist, they must be completely purge-able.

In the age of Snowden and IoT rolling in, it's completely unacceptable that we lack Total Owner Control of our microprocessor-bearing devices. If Apple or Intel refuse, they can try to justify $1,600-$2,000 iPhones and $400-$1,000 basic CPUs and GPUs to the consumer. Closed hardware will become a national security risk if it isn't already; it's time to nip it in the bud before so.
