Oompa··on Wildfire smoke spreads across the bay
You can see the smoke being blown south pretty clearly here http://col.st/DGu7J
Oompa··on Apple cuts Tim Cook's pay 15% for missing sales goals
Its weird, I never missed the key when I hit it but it always felt strange due to lack of feedback. I ended up binding Capslock to Escape and training myself to use that instead. Now I don't care at all.
Oompa··on HTC Vive Headset Nearing 100,000 Sales
> Because the Oculus headset works on Steam games, but the Vive doesn't out of the box work with Oculus Home. You can make it work, but it's not quite official.

Works with seated SteamVR experiences, but not room scale ones, which I think is a more compelling experience.

Oompa··on GPG signature verification
Be sure the email you commit with is also on your key. May not be your primary GH email address.
Oompa··on GPG signature verification
You can add emails to your GPG key. I added my normal committer email to my keybase key and added the key to GitHub as well and all is working well!
Oompa··on Automated Cat feeder powered by Node.js
Tell that to my cat who refuses to eat wet food, but loves kibble. She opted to not eat most of her kibble when I mixed the two.
Oompa··on Google Wants to Make Silicon Valley as Bike-Friendly as Copenhagen
> I'd also like to see "turning boxes" where to make a left you go to a perpendicular boxed out area on the right and wait for your light. They have these in Asia for scooters and bikes.

These are popping up all around SF, its very nice. Thanks SF Bike Coalition!

Oompa··on Open Code of Conduct
I've heard it used often in conjunction with benefits given to minorities. For example, a university offering a scholarship for African Americans is sometimes criticized for being reverse racist.
Oompa··on Inside GitHub's Super-Lean Management Strategy (2013)
"beer-thirty" is now "The Show" and "drink-ups" are now called "Meetups". This article is rather old.
Oompa··on Announcing Git Large File Storage
Showing diffs for binary assets doesn't need to include things like "brightness 1%". GitHub currently supports image diffs, they're simply displayed side by side, or on top of each other.
Oompa··on Announcing Git Large File Storage
There's an example server that was also open sourced today: https://github.com/github/lfs-test-server
Oompa··on Why Baidu Has Been Hijacked to Attack GitHub
All the sources I've seen just show the tweets and then go on to say how he went rogue and removed the repository. Seems like a really weak argument.
Oompa··on Why Baidu Has Been Hijacked to Attack GitHub
Wait so Jake Boxer responding on Twitter to Nexxy is considered proof that he removed it? I don't think that holds up.
Oompa··on Why Baidu Has Been Hijacked to Attack GitHub
> Github has been known to remove files and repositories simply because employees don't like them, despite them not actually breaking any ToS.

Do you have any source on that?

Oompa··on PDF Viewing
No bueno! Any specific PDF file? We only render a small number of pages by default to ensure browsers can handle it :)
Oompa··on PDF Viewing
That should definitely not happen. Does that consistently happen when you click that link?
Oompa··on PDF Viewing
Sorry about that. I've updated it with a slowed down version :)
Oompa··on PDF Viewing
I used Quicktime to do a screen recording before taking that to GifBrewery to make the gif.
Oompa··on How GitHub Conquered Google, Microsoft, and Everyone Else
> I've heard that their employees do shady things on occasion (2nd hand knowledge).

Care to elaborate?

Oompa··on The Best Bike Lock
This is an impressive pain in the ass. I race too and the only lock its ever trusted behind is a deadbolt. I bought a very nice mid 80s road bike for my commuter because its about as light as an entry level race bike but looks like nothing special.
Oompa··on The Best Bike Lock
If you really care, get the fancier lock (Kryptonite Fuhgettaboutit (http://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-997986-Black-Fahgettaboudit...) they recommend and buy locking skewers. Then don't buy a new bike, but get a mid-80s steel bike and call it a day. I've left bikes locked up in the worst neighborhoods in SF overnight and haven't had shit stolen.
Oompa··on Uber pressures regulators by mobilizing riders and hiring vast lobbying network
You were able to hail a cab in the street? Lucky you. I've had cabbies refuse to take me to where I want to go. I've called cab companies, told them where I am, and they refuse to come pick me up. I've seen a cab turn down an elderly couple want to go across town because his "meter was broken", but 2 minutes later take a fare that just went a couple blocks. And I'm a white male. Minorities have an even harder problem getting cabs.

Depending on where you live, cabs are not always something that is just as easy or reliable as Uber/Lyft/Sidecar/etc. When I'm unable to get home for whatever reason, I need a service I can rely on.

Oompa··on Twitter Digits
My favorite feature of SMS authentication is when I get locked out of accounts because I'm traveling and using a different SIM.

Oompa··on Facebook's git repo is 54GB
You end up with less developers having to pull & merge/rebase if you have things in separate repos.

Individual libraries/dependencies get worked on by themselves, with an API that other applications use. Then the other apps just bump a version number and get newer code.

Oompa··on Hacker News down, unwisely returning HTTP 200 for outage message
You may be sympathetic, but it seems like most people aren't. Most folks start saying what they'd do better and how they could improve the availability in a weekend.
Oompa··on Gist meets GeoJSON
Yup! Its even linked to in the blog post.
Oompa··on Repository Next
The bar is context sensitive. Search from your newsfeed, and it searches all of GitHub. If you're looking at a repo, you by default search that repo.
Oompa··on There's a map for that
A lot of folks from the GIS community. As mentioned in the blog post, people will already storing this data on GitHub, now it's simply presented in a nicer fashion :)

And as you mentioned, sometimes just providing the tools empowers the community to do to do amazing things.
